It's pretty clear that the launch of Modern Warfare 3 has had more negatives associated with it than positives. As poorly received as the game has been so far, Call of Duty games always sell very well. Some, clearly, more than others. Will MW3 become 2023's best-selling game regardless? We'll have to see the overall picture towards the end of the year. One thing is, however, very clear: it has not been popular amongst Steam users. Modern Warfare 3 launched November 10 on Steam, and elsewhere. As we tend to do, we like to look at how it has been doing on Steam (now that Call of Duty games are on Steam again ). - Here's your first look at the Lara Croft Operator Bundle in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - 29 August 2023
Activision has anounced that Lara Croft, the iconic adventurer from the Tomb Raider series, will be joining the battle in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone Season 5 Reloaded. It's believed Lara's "look" in the game is how the adventurer will appear in the Tomb Raider reboot. Since Crystal Dynamics hasn't provided the public with a look at Lara, we're just guessing her Call of Duty Operator model will be similar in the reboot. Lara arrives as a Store Bundle Operator in Season 05 Reloaded in the Tracer Pack: Tomb Raider Bundle for 2,400 COD Points. Set to be available on September 9, the bundle will available for a limited time and include three weapon blueprints based on some of Lara's most iconic weapons from the Tomb Raider series such as her dual pistols. If you follow the discourse around Call of Duty from a certain segment of the player base, you'll no doubt have heard the cries about disbanding lobbies, which has over the years taken on a sort of mythical status that YouTubers and the most dedicated players always claim would make the experience better for everyone if it got removed. Modern Warfare 2 , like its predecessors, disbands every lobby after the match is over, which is likely necessary to how the game's matchmaking works, as it constantly reevaluates player performance and moves them around into more suitable lobbies. While this doesn't look like it's changing, Infinity Ward has made a concession that could, in theory, keep teams together. Season 5 reloaded - which arrives tomorrow, August 30 at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST - adds the Play Again feature. Read more

As promised , Call of Duty will allow players - for the first time ever - to bring forward content they own from one game into the next. In this case, anything you've unlocked or bought in Modern Warfare 2 will be available in Modern Warfare 3 . This includes the vast majority of weapons, store bundles, skins, operators and everything else you might have accrued. The only caveat is that if the content you're bringing forward does not have a basis in Modern Warfare 3, it won't be available. For instance, if you have a skin for a melee weapon that does not exist in Modern Warfare 3, you won't be able to use it. Activision put together a big blog post with a detailed FAQ that looks at every potential case and confirms whether or not the item in question will carry forward. Call of Duty continues to work out new ways to make the lives of cheaters miserable. The team behind the series' Ricochet Anti-Cheat has been experimenting with reducing cheaters' weapon damage significantly , making them feel delirious by creating enemies only they can see, turning real enemies invisible, and taking away their weapons. Just recently, 14,000 were banned thanks to new detection techniques that identified them based on the cheat maker they bought their hacks from. But Call of Duty is not stopping there, as the game will now broadcast their names for everyone in the match to see. Starting in Warzone, and Modern Warfare 2 Season 5 (which is live now), the kill feed will show the names of cheaters the system banned, in real-time. You have to feel for social media managers who now have to deal with game leaks. Before, big companies used to simply pretend they didn't happen, and only used their social media to propagate the official messages. These days, however, they're a little more willing to appear "hip"/"with it" and engage in the discourse. Call of Duty is one such brand, of course, and after a series of Modern Warfare 3 leaks - most recently with an energy drink revealing the game's keyart , Activision has started embracing the chaos and chiming in following every new leak to keep the conversation focused. The most recent attempt is also its most cringe-worthy, but we're willing to forgive it because it may have actually offered some new piece of information. Read more

Activision Blizzard's efforts to detect and ban cheaters in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , and Warzone don't seem to be wavering. Thanks to Ricochet and advanced detection techniques, over 14,000 more accounts have been banned from the two games. The result of this latest ban wave was shared by the Call of Duty Updates account on Twitter, noting that thanks to new detections, the developer was able to target cheat developers at the source. Although the tweet does not offer any specifics, it appears that anti-cheat teams were able to detect hackers based on the source of the cheats they bought. In other words, identifying a certain style of cheat may have lead them to detect and ban everyone using it, which is great news, as it goes beyond simply banning bad actors. Read more

Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone Season 5 will be rather interesting for players, as there will be new Operators joining the battle, and all are familiar faces. Alongside new maps and weapons, the new Operators will include Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, and 21 Savage. The trio is joining the game as part of the 50-year celebration of Hip-Hop which will run throughout the season. Snoop Dog isn't a stranger to Call of Duty, and you will be able o pick his skin up during the season. You can also pick up a skin for Nicki Minaj, sporting pink hair, and all. The other new entry is rapper 21 Savage, but we don't know what his skin looks like at the moment, as it's shadowed out on the Call of Duty blog . Read more

Activision has not said a single official word about this year's Call of Duty. The publisher previously confirmed its existence , of course, and revealed that it's going to be a full-on premium release, and not an expansion to Modern Warfare 2 as earlier reports indicated. But as far as the name, release date, details about what's coming, or which of Activision's studios is working on it, we've yet to hear anything. In a surprising Sunday announcement, PlayStation has officially signed a deal with Microsoft to keep Call of Duty on the former's platform. After months of discussion and deals being formed with a number of companies, today Xbox head Phil Spencer has shared that PlayStation has signed an agreement with Microsoft over Call of Duty. "We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard," Spencer wrote on his own Twitter account. "We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favourite games." - Poorly redacted court documents reveal how much Call of Duty is worth to PlayStation - 29 June 2023
The FTC vs Microsoft trial intended to block the latter's planned acquisition of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard, has produced another nugget of privileged information. Today's find comes from a document provided by Sony that reveals just how important Call of Duty is to the PlayStation business, among many other secrets. The filings were supposed to be redacted, but were seemingly scanned into a computer after certain sections were blacked out (to prevent anyone from accessing this insider data). Unfortunately, scanning the documents diminished the effects of the black marker, making them partially, or mostly, legible. Documents were uploaded as part of the public domain, before Sony requested they be removed so they can be properly redacted. But everyone keeping an eye on the trial already downloaded everything, so it's of little use. Read more
