- Emotional texture: in praise of naturalism in games - 10 July 2021
One of my favourite things about playing games is a sensation of comfort through 'immersion'. You hear that term a lot in discussions about games, but every player finds immersion in their own way - some delight in travelling the open worlds of places like Skyrim, others find immersion in the trickiness of Tetris, or maybe you prefer simulation style games about farming, like the wonderfully serene Stardew Valley. I actually find some form of immersion in all of those, but I do have a special preference: moments that are grounded and naturalistic in their depiction, usually in games that focus on story and characterisation. There is an excellent display of this concept in Final Fantasy 8, a game where you play as the protagonist Squall, a young student. In one specific scene, Squall is sitting in a vehicle with three others just before a big mission. His posture is coiled up and tight -…
- Props to Microsoft for letting you play Flight Simulator for £1 - 6 August 2020
The standard edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator costs £59, but like me trying to show my parents their house from a Airbus A320neo, we can go lower. A lot lower, as it turns out. Here’s how you can play (but not own) what’s looking to be the first game of the next, next, next-generation for as low as £1. And you get over 200 other games with it as well. (more…)
- Five of the Best: E3 conferences - 12 June 2020
Five of the Best is a weekly series about the small details we rush past when we're playing but which shape a game in our memory for years to come. Details like the way a character jumps or the title screen you load into, or the potions you use and maps you refer back to. We've talked about so many in our Five of the Best series so far . But there are always more. Five of the Best works like this. Various Eurogamer writers will share their memories in the article and then you - probably outraged we didn't include the thing you're thinking of - can share the thing you're thinking of in the comments below. Your collective memory has never failed to amaze us - don't let that stop now! This week we'd usually have been arguing about - I'm sorry I mean debating - all the big announcements from E3. True, we had Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal yesterday and it was very exciting, and true, we have a…
- 9 of the best games with time travel - 3 January 2020
One Off The List is our weekly list feature. Is there something you think doesn t deserve to be on this list? Comment with your reasons why, and next week it may be struck off. And with that we are another year closer to the eagerly anticipated cooling of all matter. You may have read that the concept of weeks, months and years is the culmination of humanity s collective understanding of a complicated astronomical pattern. It’s an interesting take. However, the correct hypothesis was posited by your stoner housemate Jed from university. Time is, like, a construct, he said, with the deep wisdom and clarity only three tins of San Miguel can deliver. The Chinese have a totally different calendar, y know. Do you want to order takeaway? So let s chronicle games about time, specifically those that prove the passing of years is nothing but a directionless tumble through the jelly-like su…

- Microsoft announces 50+ titles for Xbox Game Pass - 14 November 2019
Xbox Game Pass really is the gift that keeps on giving. Tonight at X019, Microsoft has announced more than 50 new titles headed to the service in the coming months. From a collection of Final Fantasy games and The Witcher 3, to indie gems like My Friend Pedro and Phogs, it looks like there's a little something for everyone on the way - and a bunch of new games have even arrived on Game Pass today. And, separately, Phil Spencer has said a cross-platform Final Fantasy 14 is coming. Read more
- We fed game characters into a neural net' and it told us who they were with an astonishing 15% accuracy - 16 September 2019
Those of you chained to the churning wheel of the internet might have seen this facial recognition algorithm thingo doing the rounds. It’s called ImageNet Roulette , and it’s basically a website where you feed in a photo of your human face and see what the cybergods of our terrible future make of you. But it’s probably not safe to show the neurohive your real face. So we showed it 13 pictures of videogame characters instead, to see if the machine lords of the net realm can tell who they are and what they are all about. The short answer: not really, but sometimes. The neural net, it turns out, is a dangerous idiot. (more…)
- Final Fantasy 8 Remastered: the upgrades are sparse but the game still shines - 7 September 2019
How apt that in the week that Eurogamer itself celebrates its 20th birthday, a remaster should appear for one of 1999's finest console releases. With Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, the hope is to get the definitive edition for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch. Two decades on from its original launch, it's conspicuous in being the last FF of that era to get any form of HD treatment - and when you see the remaster in action, it's clear why. As much as this new version takes steps in the right direction, there are points which are - sadly - a step back from the PlayStation original. It's a shame because Final Fantasy 8 was a landmark release, taking the technological triumphs of FF7 and significantly building upon them. The beautiful video sequences returned, for example, but this time pre-rendered scenes integrated more closely with what was then state-of-the-art 3D modeling. It's an idea that F…
- I have complicated feelings about Final Fantasy VIII Remastered - 3 September 2019
Whenever someone asks me what my favourite Final Fantasy game is, the answer is always Final Fantasy VIII . It’s getting on a bit (20 years, in fact) but its tale of time-travelling witches, lovestruck teens, cannonball dogs and bonkers floating military schools is still, for me, one of the best things to come out of this never-ending series. It is, however, one of the more trying Final Fantasy games to get running properly on PC. The 2013 PC release is, let’s face it, a bit of a fudge. The music isn’t right, the controls are fiddly; it’s aged horribly. Good thing, then, that today marks the release of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered , a spruced-up, PC-friendly version that finally does it justi– wait… What’s wrong with those SeeD students? And those backgrounds? And oh sweet Guardian Forces WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO SQUALL’S FACE? (more&hellip…
- Final Fantasy VIII Remastered arrives in September - 20 August 2019
For all the decades of ha-ha-hilarious jokes about a final Final Fantasy as the numbers kept climbing higher, we hadn’t predicted that Square Enix would keep it going from the other end too with remakes and remasters aplenty. Up next is Final Fantasy VIII Remastered , a fancied-up version of the game which in 1999 was definitely the last in the RPG series for real ho ho! Squeenix today announced that it’s coming real soon, on September 3rd. This is the game our Katharine declared the best Final Fantasy (and Brendan reluctantly agreed) so maybe I’ll have a look next month. (more…)
