- Minute Of Islands review: a grim world drawn in a wonderful, elegant way - 14 June 2021
Puzzle-platformer Minute Of Islands sort of feels like a fairytale. Like a lot of stories for kids, the narration is simple, almost sing-song and poetic in tone. It tells the story of Mo, a self-taught engineer who lives mostly underground, tending to the bio-mechanical engines operated by four giants - brothers, in fact. The brothers hand-crank the machines to filter and purify the air, which would otherwise become filled with poisonous fungal spores. When the engines break down one day, Mo must brave the surface, checking on her family and growing increasingly paranoid and bitter at her unappreciated sacrifice as she breathes in the spores. But the actual events, and the things you see as you jump and climb around the archipelago Mo lives on, present a jarring contrast to the narration. The narrator points out a dead whale. Hi everyone, We all know (especially after a year of a global pandemic) that things don’t always go according to plan. This is, unfortunately, the case with Minute of Island, which has hit some unforeseen snags. As much as we had fully hoped and intended to bring Minute of Islands to stores on March 18, some significant last-minute issues appeared during our last round of testing. This means that it’s with a heavy heart that we’ve decided to push the release on all platforms to a later date. Studio Fizbin, the developer behind acclaimed point-and-click adventure series The Inner World, has delayed the release of its beautiful narrative puzzle platformer Minute of Islands, meaning it'll no longer launch on 18th March as originally planned. Minute of Islands charts the adventures of a young engineer named Mo as she journeys across a procession of beautifully distinct islands, meeting new characters and uncovering forgotten secrets in an attempt to save her archipelago home from a disaster of ancient origins. Eurogamer's Christian Donlan was thoroughly charmed by Minute of Islands' early moments when he took the Steam Game Festival demo for a spin last month , calling it a "neat blend of exploration, traversal and puzzle solving", both fascinating and disquieting. A quick glance at Minute of Islands and I wanted in. Here were blue skies and bright sou'westers, a story book adventure about a girl and a boat and an archipelago of some sort. When I played the demo, though, which is available as part of the Steam Game Festival, I realised that Minute of Islands is actually rather different. Look again: this isn't a children's book style. It's the thin lines and eager rot of 1980s underground comics. That sou'wester is Hazmat yellow, and this adventure doesn't start on the open wave but deep underground, in biomechanical corridors and ear canal spaces where machinery has gone wrong and the air is poisoned.
