  Cococucumber - the folks behind the beautifully odd Echo Generation - are ready to release their next voxel adventure, the fairytale slasher Ravenlok coming to PC, Game Pass, and Xbox consoles on May 4th. It’s clearly riffing on Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland as our protagonist, the titular Ravenlok, moves to a new inherited house, gets sucked through a magical mirror and steps into a trippy, mushroom-filled land. From there, she needs to fight this realm's off-brand Queen Of Hearts and save the remaining, slightly weird, storybook denizens. Read more

• Echo Generation is an eerie game with a sweet exterior - 20 November 2021

  Echo Generation is an interesting indie game released earlier this year on Xbox, PC and Game Pass. It's a mix of Paper Mario combat, adventure game puzzles and beautiful voxel art. The story is one you'd be familiar with if you've ever seen Stranger Things, or other paranormal 80's shows. Two young siblings and their pet - which could be anything from a cat, to a robot, to an alien cat - make some creepy, supernatural discoveries in their suburban town and decide to take care of it themselves, since the adults are incompetent. You'd be forgiven for thinking that Echo Generation is another wholesome release cashing in on some nostalgia, at least from the opening. The game welcomes you with massive, pixelated grins on every face and a charismatic 8-bit theme playing, which could've been ripped straight from a Pokémon game.   Like anyone, I went into Echo Generation knowing it would be riding on Stranger Things’ coattails. With its young cast and retro, small town setting, this is a game that definitely falls into that familiar “gang of boys plus maybe someone’s girlfriend going on an occult adventure” vein of 80s nostalgia fests like The Goonies and It.
