Former Thief: The Dark Project designer, Ion Storm game director, and sometime Spielberg collaborator Randy Smith Evergreen has shared his probably-incendiary view that photorealistic videogame graphics need not have advanced any further than Remedy's original Alan Wake . For context, Alan Wake released back in 2010, when some of you people were screaming babies. Every touted breakthrough in visual fidelity since that golden year? A pointless indulgence and a reckless travesty. A middle finger jammed up the nose of god. Smith Evergreen is entirely wrong, of course: videogame graphics actually topped out with PS1's MediEvil, still definitively the most faithful and convincing portrayal of an incompetent walking skeleton known to science. Back in February, Remedy appointed Jean-Charles Gaudechon as its new CEO following last year's FBC: Firebreak flop. This quickly raised some eyebrows given Gaudechon's tenure at EA, a game studio that's had its fair share of controversies over the years thanks to its business practices. After all, Remedy are meant to be this quirky, Finnish game studio that does things their own, weird way, such an appointment felt out of step. But, in a recent interview, Gaudechon made it seem like he's not about to "change the DNA" of a place like Remedy (even if he does still want to bring more money in by expanding in other ways). Remedy’s done a thing. The studio has just announced it’s put together a partnership with Annapurna Interactive - you know, the folks who published that cat game and a bunch of other acclaimed indies - to help bankroll Control 2 . As part of the deal, Annapurna’s getting the rights to bring Alan Wake and Control to TV and film screens. As announced in a press release that contains at least one joke about Finnish people having no emotions, Remedy’s done this with the aim of making sure Control 2 is the all-singing, all-dancing thing its developers want to deliver.
