- NEW Summer 22 Demo! - 23 May 2022
Following extensive play-testing, Wreck Out is back with improved controls, better onboarding and revamped VFX. Try it now and tell us what you think! All New VFX Our suite of new visual effects makes the action more electrifying than ever. We've got new tackle particle systems, skid-marks, explosions and more. Improve Controls Wreck Out is now easier to pick-up-and-play than ever before. You are no longer required to swing the ball to shoot, just fire from-the-hip whenever you are ready. Experts can still pull of a devastating power-shot, but newcomers will find it easier to get up to speed. We've also tweaked the tutorials, simplified the menus and added a work-in-progress tournament system against bots. Enjoy, and let us know what you think.
- Power-Ups and Ultimates Updated - 27 May 2021
Following community feedback from recent playtesting events, we have overhauled the power-up system and the ultimate system to make them more simple, clear and effective. Let's take a look: Ultimate Abilities The system for ultimate abilities had been simplified as follows: Assignment BEFORE: The were randomly assigned to characters NOW: Each character has a specific ultimate Triggering BEFORE: Play skillfully to fill your skill meter to level 1, 2 or 3 and then trigger NOW: You can use your character's ultimate once per match Ability Types BEFORE: A mixture of ability types, from turning your opponent into an ice cube, to repelling tackles, to rebuilding or armouring bricks. NOW: Ultimates always enhance your shooting or tackling capability i.e. they apply a super power to your existing capabilities. Below you can see an example of the new Ignite Scattershot ultimate assigned to the Ig…
- Introducing Fine-Aim - 18 May 2021
We were inspired by your feedback on Discord, and from participants in the recent Score Attack tournament to introduce a new Fine-Aim feature: Fine-Aim is triggered by holding down the action button while turning, causing a localised slow-motion effect on your vehicle, with an extended aiming arrow. This gives you more time to line up your shot and release. The trade off is that you cannot achieve a Power Shot using fine aim, and of course you risk giving your opponent a little extra time to tackle you. Expert players will learn when to use Fine Aim, and when to shoot-from-the-hip for speed and power.

- Introducing Quazadrome! - 11 February 2021
If you've played the Steam Game Festival demo, you've no doubt seen the new Quazadrome arena in action. Here's a look behind the scenes on how is was designed. First, sketches were produced to capture the 1950s retro-robotics theme we were after: Sketches of the spinning droids which feature in the gameplay were also produced: Next, colour drafts of the arena were produced: Then, the first pass render was created: For the second pass render, we went for a darker floor: Then came the final render, with a detailed lighting pass: Aside from the spinning droids, gameplay contraptions in Quazadrome include speed strips and gravity spots.

- Art Style Overhaul 3/3 - 20 January 2021
With new out-of-this-world arenas and party-time characters created, we needed a new-look logo for Wreckout to capture the essence of the game. Capturing the Action We wanted a logo which captured the unique action of Wreckout at a glance. We started with some concept sketches: We chose the sketch which felt like it captured the fun-factor of the game and the vehicle element, but we also wanted to incorporate the unique "car-catapult" mechanic which is central the the Wreckout experience, so the next stage was to sketch in some ideas for incorporating the tethered ball: We realised at this stage that we could capture another key element of the gameplay by using the font to represent the bricks which players smash up in the game. This was worked into the design as we moved into the colour-test phase: With our colour-scheme chosen, we iterated on the ball tether and the bricks-smashing ef…
- Art Style Overhaul 2/3 - 27 November 2020
We are excited to reveal the all-new art style for Wreckout - injecting the game with more colour, more character, and more action! In our previous update we walked you through the development of the new Pinball Dream Park arena, now we'd like to show you how the all-new Wreckout characters were created. Party-time Character For the new-look characters, we've dialled up the cuteness, the coolness and the colour to create a diverse cast who are ready to compete and primed to party. Here's how the first two character for this new look were developed: The first stage was simple sketches of different character ideas. We pulled out a bunch of references images for the style we had in mind, and the above sketches were produced. Next were some more sketches of male and female variants of the character which we found most appealing. Then we tried out a few vehicle ideas for the characters. For…
- Art Style Overhaul 1/3 - 19 November 2020
We are excited to reveal the all-new art style for Wreckout - injecting the game with more colour, more character, and more action! We have already updated the store page assets with this vibrant new style, but we wanted to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the development process of the new arena, logo and characters. Pinball Dream Park Our renewed vision for the arenas in Wreckout is for each to embody an out-of-this-world theme, which spills over into gameplay. We started designing Pinball Dream Park by focusing on how a Pinball theme might affect gameplay in interesting ways. The first stage was to draw these elements over a screen-grab of the existing arena: A series of sketches were then produced to nail down the general style of the arena. From the thumbnails below, 3B was chosen: A detailed sketch was then produced to fine-tune the design: Next, a colour draft was created to g…

Controls We recommend playing with a controller: https://i.ibb.co/Qv51Wx9/controls.png Hints & Tips Like the best sports the basic rules of Wreckout are simple - whoever has the most bricks left at the end of each round wins - but there's a huge amount of depth and skill to master. Rounds & Sudden Death There are three rounds in a Wreckout match, like in a beat 'em up. If the score is equal at the end of a round you will enter "sudden death" where the…

- Chain switched to Energy Beam! - 26 May 2020
Recently, we made the switch from a grapple chain to an energy beam in Wreckout, as explained in the video below: Aside from the fact that it looks cool, the new energy beam is always in tension and never goes slack like the chain did. This makes the physics feel super tight and responsive, which is paramount in such and fast-paced game. It's the little things which often add up to make a big difference to gameplay! The idea for the physics model actually came from the way the Buddy Drone is connected to the players ship in our previous game Hyper Sentinel. We realised we could use a similar technique to make Wreckout even more responsive.
- Ball Bounce Risk / Reward - 15 May 2020
When it comes to gameplay, the magic is often in the subtle details which work together in harmony to create a desired affect. For Wreckout, we have been playtesting and fine-tuning from the outset to ensure that matches feel dramatic, silky-smooth and perfectly balanced. To use just one example, the "bounce" value for the ball has been carefully balanced according to the surface it hits. If you miss your opponents brick and hit the back wall, the ball is likely to bounce back at you fast enough to destroy your own bricks. On the other hand if you hit your opponents bricks, the ball will bounce back just that little bit more slowly, so it is likely to end just short of your own bricks, giving your the chance to grab it again and take another shot. This creates a risk-factor for missing shots which becomes more acute as you pull into the lead, since you have less remaining bricks to aim…
- Round System Explained - 1 May 2020
There are 3 rounds in a Wreckout match, like in a beat 'em up 🥊, but each round goes to sudden death ⚽️ if there's no winner when time runs out ⏱️. This system creates maximum drama, and breaks up matches into bite sized chunks. It also means there is always a winner and multiple different levels of victory, because each round can be won in three ways: Perfect: The winner destroys all of their opponents bricks before the timer runs down Timed: Both teams have one or more bricks remaining when the timer runs down, but the winner has more remaining Sudden Death: Both teams have an equal number of bricks remaining when the timer runs down, leading to “sudden death” where the next team to lose a brick loses the round. Our plan is to then calculate a points value for the winner as follows: Round 1: 3 points for Perfect, 2 for Timed and 1 for Sudden Death Rounds 2/3: 5 points for Perfect, 3…
