- Paradox think there's no point competing with XCOM after their Lamplighters flop - it's "winner takes all" in the "tactical gaming space" - 15 October 2024
Last October, Paradox Interactive announced that they and development studio Harebrained Schemes were breaking up , following underwhelming sales of Harebrained's 1930s-set XCOMlike, The Lamplighters League . The publishers had already made layoffs at Harebrained in the run-up to release, implying that preorder numbers were low; ultimately, Paradox wrote it off as a $22 million flop. At the time of the "parting of ways", Paradox chief operational officer Charlotta Nilsson washed her hands of XCOMlikes entirely, commenting that "a new project or sequel in the same genre was not in line with our portfolio plans". - XCOM is "the one thing that works" in tactical games, Paradox executive says - 12 October 2024
Turn-based strategy games and tactical RPGs come and go, but XCOM is forever. At least, it can certainly feel that way. It's been more than eight years since Firaxis unleashed XCOM 2 on the world, and almost six since the arrival of its masterful War of the Chosen expansion. Since then, we've seen some excellent contenders in the space - the likes of Gears Tactics, Battletech, and Warhammer 40k Battlesector come to mind - but none have become quite the cultural phenomenon that XCOM is. In the wake of its own attempt, I asked Paradox deputy CEO Mattias Lilja about trying to compete with such established titans. Read the rest of the story... - XCOM like strategy game with a twist hits new Steam historical low - 13 May 2024
I still fondly remember the first time I played Lamplighters League . Sat in a warehouse near downtown San Francisco at GDC, the first level of this XCOM-style turn-based strategy game ensnared me. As the developers at Harebrained Schemes watched from behind (I didn't realize this until afterward), I snuck around a 1940s pulp-inspired dockyard, before going loud and engaging in combat. - The Lamplighters League Dev Diary #9 - Isaac - 6 December 2023
Isaac Greymoor is ready to bring the heat in the fight against the Banished Court! This hot-headed mercenary is the prodigal son of the past leader of the Lamplighters League. Isaac and Locke are the only survivors from the glory days — and it is time for Isaac to rejoin the cause. Bringing the Heat Isaac’s weapon is his Light Machine Gun. It excels at dealing a lot of hits and stacking up a lot of damage. His gun does not use Ammo and does not need to be reloaded — instead, Isaac must manage the weapon’s Heat, visualized by a meter in the lower left corner of the screen. Isaac’s kit revolves around firing his LMG to build Heat. The more Heat Isaac has, the stronger all of his LMG attacks become. But it comes with a tradeoff—for every stack of Heat, he loses some of his Speed. Each of Isaac’s abilities has a special interaction with Heat and there is a big damage benefit the more Heat h…

- Marteau Heist - Important Information - 3 November 2023
Hello Lamplighters, Our next update is arriving soon with lots of fixes for bugs and crashes alike, as well as some new goodies to look forward to. However, we also have an important message for you: The Marteau Heist is one many players have struggled with or are currently struggling with. We’ve had a lot of focus on fixing this issue. As a result, saves made mid-mission during the Marteau Heist will break when the fixes release. If you end up with a broken save as a result, make sure to resume your autosave from right before the mission starts. We’re terribly sorry about this inconvenience. On another note, it has been 1 month since the release of Lamplighters League! We want to say a big thank you to everyone who has been playing the game and having a blast! ⚡ Sincerely, The Lamplighters League Team

- The Lamplighters League review: I like you, but after a while you do my head in - 5 October 2023
In The Lamplighters League , three evil factions are gathering the power to seize an apocalyptic tower, and you must stop them by finding and trashing their power bases. They'll grow in power the whole time, but you'll slow them by stealing and sabotaging with your team of colourful secret agents, who'll bash through gauntlets of mooks and monsters with munitions, magic, and mkicks to the stomach, mostly two action points at a time. All that makes for a colourful ride, and its 1930s setting and adventurous tone carried it for a while, but the more I played it, the more my wavering opinion turned into outright resentment. That's a damn shame, because it gets a lot right. Read more
- Welcome to the launch of the Lamplighters League! - 3 October 2023
It goes without saying, maybe, but this is a special day for us, and we are so excited to be sharing this game with you. Games like this take a long time to bring to life from the first pitches to the final product you can finally play today. At each stage there are unique challenges—especially when bringing to life a brand new game world and working out new twists for an established and complex genre like turn-based tactics. It can be grueling, especially when the build isn’t feeling fun, or a production deadline is looming. Or, worse, when those two things are happening at once. It can also be incredibly rewarding. There was a moment during development where we were, in fact, facing down the fact that infiltration just wasn’t fun and there was a big deadline coming up fast. We needed to rethink things, and we needed to do it quickly. Under that pressure the team prototyped and impleme…
