- UPDATE: Fixing the crash handler - 13 November 2020
Today's update fixes our crash handler to point to a new URL. Nothing else should have changed.
- The 9 worst scientists in PC games - 3 July 2020
One Off The List is our weekly list feature. Is there something you think doesn’t deserve to be on this list? Comment with your reasons why, and next week it may be struck off. Science, the most difficult of the arts. We are trained from toddlerhood to respect and fear the products of scientific advancement, such as the selfie sticks or mechanical pencil. The unsurpassed boffins who create such devices are worthy of admiration. But there is one realm in which science is not such a gentle guardian of the people. That’s right, it’s videogames. In games, scientists are treacherous, evil, stupid, murderous or some genetic concoction of all the above. Here are the 9 worst scientists in PC games. (more…)
- UPDATE: Bug fixes - 19 November 2019
Today's update fixes a bug where the mouse cursor was blurry when using the "full" pixel scaling option. It also adds part rotation to the controls listing.
- UPDATE: Bug fixes, unlock tweaks - 18 November 2019
Today's update changes the bonus campaign to unlock halfway through the main campaign rather than at the end of it. You'll still need to beat all the main campaign puzzles to see the full story. We've also fixed a bug where the wrong histogram would be shown after deleting a solution and causing a different solution to be selected.
- UPDATE: Bonus campaign tweaks - 16 November 2019
Today's update changes the order of a bunch of the bonus campaign puzzles. If you've completed some but not all of them you'll probably see some weird text on the locked puzzles (like "SOLVE -4 MORE") that is completely normal and should be disregarded. Also, nicotine has been replaced with bithionol, a more interesting puzzle made by a player instead of me.
- UPDATE: Draft version of the bonus campaign - 14 November 2019
Today's update includes a draft version of the bonus campaign, available to players who have completed the main campaign. The specific list of puzzles and their order is not final and is likely to change over the next week or so. Let us know what you think of the bonus campaign through the normal channels! This update also includes a change in how we draw the screen when the "full" pixel scaling method is selected. It used to remain sharp but result in differently-sized pixels, while it now is less sharp but much more consistent looking. If your monitor resolution is a multiple of 960x540 (i.e. 1080p or 4K) this won't matter to you.
- Help us create a bonus campaign using new precursors! - 13 November 2019
Today's update adds a simple "level editor" with an entirely new set of precursors. Use it to create solutions that manufacture drug molecules of your choosing, and then send us ([email protected]) screenshots of your solutions running with the target molecule clearly visible. We'll pick our favorites and include them in an upcoming free bonus campaign. NOTE: You must have solved all of the puzzles in the main campaign to unlock the bonus campaign and its level editor. This update also includes fixes for two GIF-related bugs; one involved GIFs sometimes not looping smoothly, while the other involved solutions with only one or two lines of instructions never finishing recording.
- Premature Evaluation: Molek-Syntez - 12 November 2019
Premature Evaluation is the weekly column in which Steve Hogarty explores the wilds of early access. This week, he’s manufacturing narcotics in near future Romania. Developer: Zachtronics Publisher: Zachtronics Release: Out now (early access) On: Windows, Mac, Linux From: Steam For: 7.19, $9.20, 8.40 A chemistry teacher once tried to teach me what a molecule is, but it didn t stick, thanks to my chronically slippery brain which refuses to retain useful information. Please correct me in the comments below, but as far as I understand the situation, molecules are like atoms but larger and with some fun accessories. If atoms are footballs, let s say, then molecules are those big nets filled with footballs you see hanging outside shops in seaside towns. Some molecules are good and clump together to form chemicals we like, such as water and sunshine. Other molecules are horrible and con…
- UPDATE: Gameplay changes, bug fixes - 7 November 2019
Today's update includes the following: Changed bond-breaking priority so that rotating your solution will less frequently change its behavior. This will probably break any solutions you have that relied on ambiguous bonding or unbonding resolving in a particular way. Changed the trash and output instructions so that they happen after the movement and hydrogen manipulation instructions. This fixes some simulation oddities ("disappearing" hydrogen) and hopefully adds a little more optimization depth. This will also probably break some solutions. Reset histograms and leaderboards because of the above gameplay changes. Added tutorial text to the second puzzle better explaining that you can move and rotate precursors and emitters. Added hotkey support to the solution list (arrows, enter, Ctrl+N, Ctrl-C, F2 / Ctrl-R, delete). Added support for right-clicking to cancel playback and exit some s…
- UPDATE: Post-launch improvements - 5 November 2019
Today's update includes the following changes: Added the ability to delete the dragged instructions by pressing the delete key or dropping them outside of the program grid. Added a rotation button to the solution shifting tool. Added support for rotating dragged parts with the scroll wheel. Modified histograms to show your old solution scores when they change. Modified the icon for the hydrogen shunt instruction to be easier to read. Fixed a bug where you could start a new solitaire game while dragging cards.
- MOLEK-SYNTEZ is a new Zachtronics game about making drugs in a cold Romanian apartment - 5 November 2019
It is so likeZach to release a Zachlike (just a Zach to his friends) about creating drugs in a small Romanian apartment. Molek-Syntez is now squatting on early access, trying to hook you in with the good stuff as you program your molecular synthesiser. Your goal is to turn chemicals into medicines and other substances with “various pharmacological effects”. (more…)
