Command and Conquer is in a strange limbo right now. Earlier this year, the entire RTS series was repackaged for a new release on Steam. Very recently, the forgotten MMO-inflected spinoff Tiberium Alliances also appeared on Valve's store. But with Westwood gone and EA's intentions unclear, it's not certain where the future of C&C lies. And so, we look to the past. Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, and Homeworld are renowned as classics of the genre. Today, we have Company of Heroes, Total War, and Stormgate. But the greatest RTS games of all time are still the first Command and Conquer, also known as Tiberian Dawn, and its pseudo sequel Red Alert. I think it's fair to say Command & Conquer Remastered Collection was a resounding success. EA's nostalgia-fuelled real-time strategy revival was a hit with fans and critics alike when it launched in June - and it saw big sales on Steam. But as its developers continue to support the game with balance updates, tweaks and mod support, the inevitable question is this: what's next for Command & Conquer? Following the launch of the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection earlier this month, EA have now slammed its soundtracks onto streaming services for your sonic satisfaction. Along with its remastered versions of the C&C and Red Alert soundtracks, they’ve put up an album of hard-rockin’ new recordings from C&C composer Frank Klepacki and his band, The Tiberian Sons. According to RPS’s Command & Conquer Remastered Collection review, the revitalized classic RTS is “both precisely as good and exactly as dated as it’s supposed to be.” Even so, Petroglyph have found a few places to improve and have released the first round of bug fixes and additions. As mentioned in the post last week, our goal with this update was multifold: Complete several of the top community requested features which just missed the launch date Implement some additional quality-of-life improvements Address many of the top bugs which have been seen in the launch version Iterate on our Quickmatch ruleset Below you will find the full list of Patch Notes for this update. I was far too young to even comprehend Command & Conquer when it first came out in 1995, and to my great shame it’s never been something I’ve sought out in the intervening years. But watching Command & Conquer Remastered Collection ‘s newly re-tooled EVA opening sequence had me pumping my fists and bellowing with excitement like I’d been down there in the fan trenches all along.
