- 500 Years of Animation: Available now! - 1 July 2020
Major Update: Galactic Center VR now includes 500 years worth of supercomputer simulation data for you to explore. Dubbed Version 2, this is a significant upgrade over the previous version, which only allowed for exploring the present-day status of the simulation (so no animation). Watch the massive stars orbit the supermassive black hole, the stellar winds being spewed into outer space, the supersonic wind-wind collisions that become aglow in X-ray light, and material plummet towards the black hole. See either all the winds in the simulation or just one of our three favorites. Additionally, play time backwards to see where the material flowing towards the black hole came from. We've included less resource intensive options, including as the option to just see 100 years of evolution, to accommodate a range of computer specs.
- NASA Press Release on Galactic Center VR! - 1 July 2020
The Chandra X-ray Observatory and NASA made a press release about "Galactic Center VR" stemming from the presentation of the app by lead developer and IA PUC VR Lab director Dr. Christopher Russell at the 236th American Astronomical Society (AAS) meeting on June 2, 2020. There was a press conference where Dr. Russell did a live demo of this VR experience from his living room, which were accompanied by press articles on NASA's and Chandra's website. No more static stars and winds -- now you can see enerything in action, including material plummet towards Sgr A*, the superm…
- The Release of Galactic Center VR - 25 March 2020
Galactic Center VR is now available to play! Developed for the HTC Vive headset, it's completely free! As astronomers (from the Instituto de Astrofísica, PUC de Chile) we quite enjoy outer space. We get to create and work with amazing supercomputer simulations every day, so we took the favorite NASA supercomputer simulations of ours and put it into VR for you to enjoy as well. Have fun exploring the central few light years of our Milky Way galaxy!
