• State of Decay 3 studio Undead Labs lay off "a significant number" of "exceptionally talented developers" after gaining independence from Xbox - 23 September 2026

  Less than 24 hours after confirming they've managed to secure a future outside of Xbox by going independent , State of Decay 3 studio Undead Labs have announced that they've had to lay off "a significant number" of staff as part of that transition. The news follows a second round of mass layoffs this year at the studios still under Microsoft's thumb.   If you have been keeping a candle lit for State Of Decay 3 since its 2020 reveal trailer purely for the prospect of fighting a zombie deer then, I'm afraid, it's time to blow that candle out. Apparently, the CGI reveal trailer was made when the open-world zombie survival game was barely a concept. Six years on from the reveal, Undead Labs have a working build of the game and it doesn't feature the reanimated corpse of Bambi. Though it does let you turn a kettle into an IED. Read more

  Undead Labs dropped a trailer this past weekend, announcing that a State of Decay 3 closed alpha test is now open to sign up for. This past weekend had an Easter egg with a little extra sweetness, specifically for State of Decay fans . On April 4, 2026, Undead Labs released a State of Decay 3 closed alpha sign-up video —updating players that this will be a first-look. The closed alpha was said to be coming next month, after years of very little information on the third installment of the game.
