  • HighFleet's atmospheric strategy is finally out - 27 July 2021

I mean, who would trust Sin, honestly? I choose to half trust her. In our HighFleet review , she wrote that there was a brilliant game buried underneath its frustrations, and as RPS's chunky button hype man, I'm choosing to believe the "brilliant" bit only. Anyway, HighFleet is out today. Pick a side. Read more

  • HighFleet is out and available to buy - 27 July 2021

HighFleet, the new unique action-strategy game mixing arcade combat, exploration, management and diplomacy, is finally released and available on Steam, now! As giant flying ships wage spectacular aerial warfare, a prophecy tells of one who will save the world – could it be you? What is the HighFleet experience? Killer combat At the heart of HighFleet is a unique form of combat in which giant ships bristling with weaponry duel above the desert. This is no mindless button mashing, however. Far from it. Battles are won with skilful manoeuvring, targeting and carefully observing the strategic layer of the battle. Serious strategy Mastering HighFleet requires much more than winning battles. You must explore the mysterious lands of Gerat. You must manage your ships, men, fuel and other resources. You must engage in diplomacy with the various factions. And then there’s the prophecy to be unrav…

  • HighFleet review: a brilliant strategy game buried under frustrations - 26 July 2021

Nate is excited about HighFleet . Graham was excited about HighFleet before he became head vampire, or whatever. I was excited about HighFleet. HighFleet is exciting. It is also very frustrating. We're at the point where we need a good shorthand for games built around a diagetic interface. HighFleet's puts you in the sky-shoes of an admiral poring over an electronic map display ringed by analogue radar-tuning dials, chunky buttons, a dangling telephone receiver like your gran's, and a big level to pull when it's time to land. But there's a weird divide going on. Read more

  • HighFleet is just the start of Microprose's retro sim revival - 15 July 2021

There’s more than enough Microprose to go around. Graham has been delighted by Highfleet ’s supremely clicky interface , as well he should. It looks excellent. But the resurrected publisher has a few more games coming out in 2021 that are worth tracking as well. I'm keen to play both Carrier Command 2 and Tiny Combat Arena . They’re two throwbacks to the publisher’s polygonal past, but modernised in some really fascinating ways. Read more

  • HighFleet will flip its switches on Steam on July 27th - 13 July 2021

HighFleet is one of the game's I'm looking forward to most this year. It's a simulation game, but it's simulating fictional machinery: giant dieselpunk airships, which spew smoke and missiles. In between, there's exploration and diplomacy and diegetic interfaces. I'm quite excited that we now know it'll be out in two weeks, on July 27th. Read more

  • HighFleet is a futuristic action-strategy game about giant airborne ships - 19 January 2021

I love the interfaces in complex military simulations. Tiny bulbs, little switches hidden behind flaps, fuzzy polygons bleeping on a low-res display. I don’t actually want to pilot real military vehicles, however, so HighFleet appeals to me a great deal. It’s got the aesthetic of a military sim, but it’s bent towards a physicsy, action-strategy game about piloting enormous flying boats above a “mysterious future Earth”. There’s a trailer and rough release date below. (more…)
