- As players debate whether to purchase Possessor(s) after Heart Machine lays off staff a week before launch, its creators and publisher respond: 'As a developer who is slated for lay off—please buy this game!' - 3 November 2025
It's a messy time over at Heart Machine, developer of the beloved Hyper Light Drifter and its ill-fated hack 'n' slash successor Hyper Light Breaker . The latter debuted to mixed Steam reviews and muted sales when it carved its way into early access back in January, resulting in layoffs at Heart Machine and work on Hyper Light Breaker ceasing prematurely ... - Hyper Light Breaker won't make it to 1.0 as work on the promising roguelike ends - 9 October 2025
With lofty expectations stemming from its incredible RPG Hyper Light Drifter, Heart Machine had a tough task ahead of it with Hyper Light Breaker . A co-op roguelike based in the same universe and with suitably striking visuals, the game was packed with potential, but sadly struggled to find its feet in early access. The studio has been working hard on turning things around with major updates, but it's now been confirmed that development on Hyper Light Breaker will be ending as Heart Machine goes through another round of layoffs. - Still in early access, Hyper Light Breaker's ending development and laying off staff: 'This was not our ideal path, but rather the only one available given the circumstances' - 9 October 2025
Just nine months after its open-world roguelike Hyper Light Breaker hit early access, Heart Machine has hit the rocks. Per Game Developer , the studio is laying off an indeterminate number of staff and ending development on its most recent game, which encountered a rough reception when it launched into early access in January, with players lamenting performance issues, control problems, bugs, and the fact that the game might just be a smidge too hard... - Hyper Light Breaker was a bust at launch, but a huge new update is luring me in - 20 August 2025
A stylish co-op roguelike base in the world of one of the all-time great indie hits, Hyper Light Breaker 's elevator pitch seemed like a strong one. However, since its early access launch at the start of the year, it's really struggled. Sure, early access is designed to be a time of learning and improvement, but it failed to make a lasting impact with fans of the genre and its celebrated sibling, Hyper Light Drifter. With 1.0 coming next year, developer Heart Machine is putting in some serious graft to turn things around, and today it's shadow-dropped a new Hyper Light Breaker update that I believe is its most important to date. Since Early Access launch way back in January (time flies when you’re in The Overgrowth!), we've been working hard on going out with consistent updates each month filled with content, gameplay improvements, bug fixes and more, including our first major content update in April, Buried Below, which changed things up quite a bit (ICYMI: details here!) - Hotfix Patch Notes - v0.6.2.118084 - 22 May 2025
Hello Breakers! We’ve got a small hotfix today, closing up a few issues that cropped up in our last release. 🐛 Bug Fixes: Removed Corundum affix temporarily while it gets updated to function with the new armor system. This had been removed, but Crystal is too strong both in-game and in-code and announced it could not be tamed by man nor beast. Fixed an issue where the Shock Status Effect could combine with the impact implosion holobyte and allow you to damage yourself. Fixed a few issues with Root Hash Hack. White Dirk Allies no longer injure players when they die. Enemy White Dirks will still explode and hurt you (and other enemies). Ranged attacks from Allies should now properly target all enemies. Note: there are some cosmetic issues with Root Hash Hack that will be addressed in our June update. Allies do not always display the correct allied material. Sometimes enemies will have th…

- Hyper Light Breaker dev feels recent rework is a "stronger foundation" for 1.0 - 11 May 2025
Hyper Light Drifter is the textbook definition of an indie darling. Propelled by an incredibly successful Kickstarter, Heart Machine's debut became an instant classic. The team followed Drifter up with Solar Ash, which cast off pixel art in favour of a 3D world. Then, earlier this year, came Hyper Light Breaker . The extraction roguelike had a divisive launch, but with its latest update Heart Machine puts the game on an entirely new path. With plenty of changes shaking it up, I sat down with one of the game's developers for an exclusive PCGamesN interview to dissect where Breaker has been, where it is now, and what the future holds. SyComs, or “Synthesizing Computers”, are robot companions that accompany the player everywhere they go in the world of Hyper Light. Each character has their own unique SyCom companion, which serves as their interface with the technology of the world, allowing them access objects like doors, hatches, and computer terminals. Facing odds in a hazardous and often lonely world, having these stalwart companions around is both a practical necessity and a comfort. - Troubled roguelike Hyper Light Breaker starts huge redemption arc in new update - 30 April 2025
Hyper Light Breaker didn't have a great launch. Heart Machine's early-access roguelike was released with undercooked gameplay and mechanics, leaving the Steam reception at a firm 'mixed.' Combine that with Breaker's stark departure from the original Hyper Light Drifter, and players found it incredibly difficult to give Heart Machine's newest game a chance. That's hopefully about to change, however, as Breaker's biggest update since launch is here, and it makes colossal improvements and game-changing alterations. Read the rest of the story... - Buried Below Update Now Live - Patch Notes - 29 April 2025
A Note from Heart Machine Hello Breakers! Welcome to our first major update - Buried Below. Since launch, one of the most consistent pieces of feedback we’ve received is that the game is difficult to learn. With that in mind, we adjusted our development schedule to bring a robust tutorial to the game. Expect that this tutorial and other training features will continue to evolve over the course of Early Access. If you’ve been playing since Launch, you may be aware that in February we put out a public, experimental beta branch with some radical changes to the way the game plays. Dubbed “the evil build” by our community on discord, even in its rough state, players were enjoying the changes - built around the core of shifting to a more traditional, one-life, one-run roguelite experience. For a more detailed version of today's patch notes, or to look back through the Early Access evolution o…
