Latest Steam announcements
- Steam Deck and Docking Station now in-stock and available! - 6 October 2022
Steam Deck is available now, without reservation! We're happy to announce that with today’s batch of order emails, we have completed our reservation queue. We are now in-stock and Steam Deck is available for purchase! It's been more than a year since Steam Deck was first announced. Since day one we've been dealing with numerous supply chain issues and component shortages. While the team worked to resolve these issues and catch up with demand, we implemented a reservation system. This system enabled customers to save their spot in line without having to worry about refreshing pages, fighting scripts, or battling bots. The team has worked hard over the past year to address shortages and solve logistics issues, and because of these efforts we're now manufacturing and shipping Steam Decks at our highest rate ever. Despite the ever-increasing reservation rate, we've been able to beat our shi…
- Steam Deck: Shipping Update - 19 September 2022
Hello, just a quick note about shipping today. As some folks on the internet have noticed (we see you Reddit!), we're speeding through reservations at an accelerated pace. This is due to increased production, and we've beaten our own estimates yet again. With today’s batch of emails we’ve now sent invitations for all reservations in the Q3 (July-September) bucket. Now that Q3 is done early, we're going to get a head start on the next set of reservations, and are fulfilling reservations that were scheduled for the Q4 window. We've updated the store page to reflect this, with an updated bucket description: September-December. That's it for today, more to come soon!
- Steam Deck repair centers are now online! - 9 September 2022
We are happy to announce today that our new Steam Deck repair centers are now open. If you encounter an issue and need to send your Steam Deck for repair or replacement, devices will now go to one of our repair centers. Once there, our team will diagnose the device, repair if needed, then ship the fixed unit back to you. Repairs for issues covered by warranty are free of charge. If a Steam Deck comes in that is not covered by warranty, our team will reach out and offer to repair the device for a fee (if a repair is possible). This out-of-warranty repair service is completely optional, and you can ask for your device back if you prefer. And of course, if you prefer to fix things yourself - repair kits, replacement parts, and guides are all available at iFixit. Here are a couple scenarios that these repair centers will cover: If your unit begins to develop an intermittent button input iss…
- Steam Deck Booklet - 25 August 2022
So we made a book about Steam Deck! In preparation for Steam Deck launching in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, we wanted to introduce our new customers to Valve, Steam, and Steam Deck. So we made a small book – it’s about 50 pages, and we’ve translated it into Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and English. The book includes: Background on Valve and our philosophy around creating products and hardware to make our customers happy An overview of Steam, how it came to be, and where it is now The story of Steam Deck, how we designed it, and why we built it the way we did Information about our collaboration with Komodo to launch in these new regions Tons of pretty pictures of Steam Deck, prototypes, games, and more We wrote, designed, and translated this book in-house, and now we’re making it available for everyone to download. It's available on Valve's publications page, or y…
- Steam Deck: Updated Shipping Estimates - 24 August 2022
Hi all, just a quick note today. Steam Deck production has continued to outperform our estimates, and we are updating shipping windows for the Steam Deck reservation queue! This means a bunch of folks who had an estimated order window of Q4 (Oct-Dec) have been moved up to the Q3 window, and can expect to receive their email by the end of September. You can check your reservation window status here (while logged in). We're glad to get these out to all of you faster, and hope you enjoy Steam Deck as much as we do! As always, we love hearing your feedback, impressions, and all the wacky things you're doing with Steam Deck.
- Reserve Steam Deck now in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong via Komodo - 4 August 2022
We are happy to announce today that Steam Deck is expanding to more regions. With the help of Komodo, Steam Deck will ship later this year in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. We have worked with the team at Komodo for years, and are excited to have their help as our authorized reseller of Steam Deck in these regions. Komodo has just opened reservations on their website here at steamdeck.komodo.jp. Customers with reservations in these new regions will be able to order their Steam Decks starting later this year. The Komodo reservation queue is separate from the reservation queue in NA / UK / EU regions, so the timing of order emails in the currently shipping regions isn't impacted by this announcement. We're very excited to make Steam Deck available in more places around the world, and hope players in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong will love Steam Deck as much as we d…
- Steam Deck production update (it's good news) - 29 July 2022
Hello! We're excited to announce that we're going to be able to fulfill demand sooner than we had estimated for everyone in the reservation queue. Many of the supply chain shortfalls that affect Steam Deck are gradually clearing up, and we're continuing to ramp production, so we're able to produce more Decks faster than ever before. As of today we've updated the reservation windows, and everyone who's currently in the reservation queue will get their Steam Deck email this year. Many customers who were in the "Q4 or later" window have been bumped up to "Q3 (July-September)" window. And everyone else is now solidly in the "Q4 (October-December)" window. As of this moment, new reservations will be in the Q4 bucket, but if these queues fill up it will flip over into the following quarter. To see your reservation window, visit this site while logged in. We're happy we'll be able to get Steam…
- Steam Deck: We made another update video! - 2 June 2022
It’s been a few months since we launched Steam Deck, and we’re floored by the excitement we’ve seen as more and more customers receive their Steam Decks and share impressions. The team has loved seeing pictures and videos of where you’re using it, how you’re using it, how you’ve customized it, and what you’re playing. Keep it coming! In the meantime, we've continued working through our own list of bugs to fix and features to add. We’ve also been paying attention to our customers, and a good number of the updates in the last couple months are directly due to customer feedback. Please keep that coming as well! Here's a quick overview of what we've shipped since our last video update, including the big update we shipped last week. Lock Screen Adding a lockscreen was a pretty hotly requested feature, from both outside and inside the company. Now players can set their PIN using the touchscre…
- Steam Deck Docking Station Delayed - 1 June 2022
Hi all. Due to parts shortages and COVID closures at our manufacturing facilities, the official Steam Deck Docking Station is delayed. We're working on improving the situation and will share more info when we have it. This has no effect on production schedule and reservation windows for Steam Decks (different parts, different factories). In the meantime the team is continuing to work on improving the docked experience for Steam Deck with all USB-C hubs and external displays.
- The SteamOS 3.2 Update - 26 May 2022
Hello! We've just shipped an update to SteamOS - we're up to 3.2 now, and it's full of some great updates and improvements to Steam Deck. Refresh Rate Players now have the option to adjust the in-game screen refresh rate on the fly. The default is 60Hz (which can be frame-limited to 60, 30, and 15fps), but you can now slide it down to 40Hz (with frame limits at 40, 20, and 10fps). Or any number (integer) between those two settings. This feature is great for finding that perfect balance between framerate, game quality, and battery life. Pro-tip, we have found that 40Hz tends to be a sweet spot for responsiveness, consistency, and smoothness*. And of course, you can save this setting on a per-game basis. Fan Behavior The team has been hard at work on Steam Deck's fan behavior, and this update has an all-new OS-controlled fan curve. This means that overall it's smarter, more responsive to…
- Steam Deck parts and repair guides now available at iFixit.com - 23 May 2022
Hello! We're happy to announce that starting today, replacement parts and repair guides for Steam Deck (and Valve Index!) are available on iFixit.com. Available parts include thumbsticks, screens, fans, and more, along with a plethora of repair guides for everything you can swap in and out of your Steam Deck. You can learn all about the parts and guides over at iFixit.com. The team at Valve is very excited about this program - we designed Steam Deck to be repairable, and it just makes sense to us to work with iFixit to enable customers to repair and replace parts on their own. That's all for today, until the next update! image via iFixit.com
- The Lock Screen Update - 25 April 2022
Today we shipped a bunch of updates to Steam Deck that improve Steam, Steam OS, and Steam Deck firmware. You can read the full patch notes here, but here's a high level look at what's changed. Lock Screen We've added the ability to turn on a lock screen and PIN for Steam Deck. You can set this to show up on wake, boot, login, and/or when switching to Desktop mode. Sorry little bro/sis, you won't be able to borrow your sibling's Steam Deck and mess with their save games any more! Updated Achievements Page The Achievements page has gotten a refresh for Steam Deck, making it faster to load and easier to navigate. You can toggle between your stats and global stats or use the new drop down to compare your achievements with any friend who also plays. Localized Keyboards We've added localized keyboards for 21 languages and layouts. Multiple keyboards can be enabled at the same time, and a new…
- Marking Steam Deck’s first month - 7 April 2022
We started shipping Steam Deck just one month ago, and it’s been a huge thrill seeing it out in the wild in players’ hands. One of our favorite things about that is finally getting to hear from you about your experience using Steam Deck. This first month has given us a chance to start collecting your feedback as we continue our work to make Deck better in the months and years to come. Deck Verified: 2000 strong and growing In just one month we’ve passed a huge milestone with 2000 games now officially Deck Verified or Playable. It's been exciting to see the variety of games the community has been playing - new or old, big or small, every genre - it seems like players have been having a ton of fun on Deck. We're going to continue charging through the Steam catalog and can't wait to share the next big milestone here. We’re also listening carefully to customer feedback in this space, as we…
- New Steam Deck Feature: Opt-in Feedback - 25 March 2022
We're adding a new feature to Steam Deck today to support gathering feedback from players by asking direct questions about your experiences. (This is an opt-in feature: we'll ask you once if you're open to answering questions, and you can opt out at any time.) The initial data we're gathering in this way is about titles that are Steam Deck Verified. We're able to collect objective data (crashes, etc.) to help us understand how well the technical side of our review process is working, but ultimately the Deck compatibility ratings are about the overall experience: the definition of "working well" is succeeding at enabling current and future Deck customers to find the experiences they want. We want to make sure we're doing that, or identify the titles for which your experiences don't match your expectations. The data collected by this system won't directly change the Deck compatibility cat…
- Steam Deck Windows drivers are now available - 10 March 2022
Hello! Have we mentioned Steam Deck is a PC? Like any other PC, you can install other applications and OSes if you'd like. For those interested in installing Windows, you'll need a few additional drivers to have the best experience. Links to these, along with notes for installing Windows on Steam Deck can be found here. Steam Deck Windows Resources A few quick notes about these resources. For now you can only perform a full Windows install. While Steam Deck is fully capable of dual-boot, the SteamOS installer that provides a dual-boot wizard isn't ready yet. Also for now, you can only install Windows 10. Windows 11 requires a new BIOS that is currently in the pipe (which provides fTPM support) and will be shipping soon. Drivers are provided for GPU, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Audio drivers are still in the works with AMD and other parties - but you'll still be able to use Bluetooth or USB-C a…
- Steam Deck - Next batch of order emails, and more - 7 March 2022
Hello! We’ve just sent out order emails to the second batch of of Q1 reservations in the queue. For more info on how exactly this order email cadence works, please see last week’s post. We're excited to get Steam Decks into the hands of more customers! Along with today’s batch of order emails, we have two announcements about reservations and availability. We have been working hard to increase the number of Steam Decks we can produce this year, and we now have more clarity on our longer term production schedule. As a result, in addition to Q1 and Q2, reservers can now see if they are in the Q3 order availability window. You can check the Steam Deck product page (while logged in) to see your reservation window. We are also looking into making Steam Deck available in more countries, including Japan, by the end of the year. The team is continuing to push on all of these fronts, and will sha…
- Deck Verified Update - 1000 Verified/Playable titles and growing - 4 March 2022
Hi! It's been an exciting week for us, as you can imagine. Not only have the first Steam Deck units made it to customer hands, but just yesterday we crossed another threshold -- over a thousand games are now Verified or Playable on Deck. This seems like a great opportunity to talk about what those Deck Verified numbers mean, both for the present and the future. What it means Whenever we talk about compatibility rating numbers, we emphasize that this is just a snapshot of a single moment, and that ratings change over time. Even as you read this, partners are working on adding controller support, enabling anti-cheat on Deck, and smoothing out the experience for players on Deck. At the same time, every day we're fixing Proton bugs that cause issues in some games, and adding new functionality to support others. As this work takes place, our existing standards for titles to get a Verified or…
- Steam Deck: Q1 Shipping Details - 25 February 2022
Hi! Happy launch day! We’ve seen some questions about what it means to be in the Q1 reservation group, and when these folks will receive their emails. Here’s how it breaks down. All people who are in the Q1 reservation window on the Steam Deck store page will receive an order email by the end of March. (Q1 is Quarter 1, or January through March). The first batch of emails has already gone out this morning. The next batch of emails will go out on Monday, March 7th. (It turns out the logistics work out better if we don’t try to ship over a weekend.) We’ll continue sending emails to Q1 reservers in the order their reservations were made on a weekly basis through the end of March (March 14th, 21st, 28th) In April, we’ll start going through the Q2 queue in a similar fashion. We’re working through our production schedules, and will have news soon for folks in the After-Q2 bucket.
- Steam Deck Launch Day - 25 February 2022
Hello! The day is finally here - today Steam Deck order emails are going out to the first batch of reservers, in the order reservations were made. They will have 72 hours to complete their purchase or cancel their reservation, and the next batch of order emails will be sent next week, and so on. As production continues to ramp up, we'll be updating reservation estimates (we see you, After-Q2 gang!). Today we've updated steamdeck.com with additional info and more prototype images than you can shake a stick at. On the desktop Steam Store, we've added a new Great on Deck page, a way to check your own library for Deck compatibility, as well as additional Steam-Deck-related display and search features. And to celebrate the launch of Steam Deck, the team has put together a launch video. We hope you have as much fun watching it as we did making it! In addition, today we are announcing Aperture…
- Launch Day Details - 23 February 2022
Hi all, Steam Deck launches in just two days! Thought we would send along some details for what you can expect on Friday, February 25th: Starting at 10am Pacific, we'll be sending emails out to the first batch of reservation holders via the address tied to their Steam account. Those folks will then have 72 hours to complete their purchase on Steam for the specific model they reserved. If they cancel or do not purchase in this time frame, we'll release their reservation to the next person in the queue. Around the same time is when you'll start seeing coverage from the roughly 100 media outlets we sent early review units to, so there will be a ton of interesting content and coverage for everyone to check out. We are also looking forward to getting the official Dock for Steam Deck into customers' hands. It won't be happening as early as we wanted, but we're excited to talk more about it so…
