- Multilingual Branch Updated to 1.3.708 - 5 June 2026
Crash So this time I realized I had changed a few DirectX graphics settings between versions, related to mip-mapping and anisotropic filtering. It did not seem significant to me at the time, but after going through a lot of the comments, people with AMD cards were the ones usually encountering the crash. Also, one person was able to fix it with dgVoodoo2, which is a kind of directx wrapper thing. So I turned off those new settings and I am hoping this resolves the issue.Testing:To test this (if you are willing and/or able) you would right click on "Islands of the Caliph > Properties > Game Versions and Betas" and select "Multilingual" from the menu. If the game is still crashing for you, or not, please let me know here.
- Multilingual Branch Updated to 1.3.707 - 24 March 2026
Crash I have gotten some feedback on the code I am using in the multilingual version of the game, and I am attempting some of the suggestions. Once again, some players are experiencing a crash when starting the game. I have not been able to reproduce the crash on any of my computers. So I am relying on player feedback to see if this works or not.Once I can confirm the crash has been addressed, I will make it the default version again.Testing:To test this (if you are willing and/or able) you would right click on "Islands of the Caliph > Properties > Game Versions and Betas" and select "Multilingual" from the menu. If the game is still crashing for you, or not, please let me know here.
- Rolled Back to version 1.3.4 - 24 March 2026
Game Rolled BackThe code handling all the translations was unstable. I can't figure out why just yet. So I have rolled the default version back to 1.3.4, and put the new version under: "Islands of the Caliph > Properties > Game Versions and Betas > Multilingual" I have also disabled the store pages for other languages for now, until I can figure out what's going on with the game. Thanks for your patience in this matter.
- Updated to Version 1.3.706 - 23 March 2026
Last Time I Swear Okay this is the last time I will attempt to fix this bug the way I have been. If this does not work, I will roll the game back to the most stable, previous (English only) version, and work on the different languages in a separate branch until they are stable. I think I have figured out where the crash is happening, and it is in the script that determines where to write save files. My attempts to fix that script seem to work on my computer(s), but other systems do not react the same way for some reason. Hopefully, this one solves the issue. Please Test! Please let me know if it is or is not working, and whether the previous version was working for you or not. Version 1.3.705 was the last version. If it is not working, and you are using English, you can go to "Islands of the Caliph > Properties > Game Versions and Betas" and select Version 1.3.4 from the list. That was t…
- Updated to Version 1.3.705 - 11 March 2026
Narrowing Down So as mentioned in the last update, when you load the game, it creates a file called: "loading.log" You can find the file here: "C:\\Users\\-Your Username-\\AppData\\Local\\Islands_of_the_Caliph"I have added more log entries to this file to help narrow down where the error is happening. If your game is crashing, please have a look at this file and post the results here. Sorry for all this, I just can't reproduce the bug at all, so I have to rely on player feedback. Older Version Might WorkI have also uploaded an older version of the game, right before updating the languages. Version 1.3.4 is available if you right-click "Islands of the Caliph > Properties > Game Versions and Betas" find and select "Version 1.3.4" on the list.I am hoping that one might work. The older version 1.1.7 seems to work for players with this issue too, but I am trying to figure out where the bug w…
- Updated to Version 1.3.704 - 10 March 2026
So there is a Bug (reprise)It crashes the game for some players when they first choose which language to use. However, on all my computers, none of them trigger the bug. So it is very hard to test and troubleshoot. So I have updated the game in an attempt to help figure out what's happening. When you load the game, it creates a file called: "loading.log" You can find the file here: "C:\\Users\\-Your Username-\\AppData\\Local\\Islands_of_the_Caliph"If the game is crashing on load, the contents of that file might help me get some details.
- Updated to Version 1.3.703 - 10 March 2026
So there is a BugIt crashes the game for some players when they first choose which language to use. However, on all my computers, none of them trigger the bug. So it is very hard to test and troubleshoot. But today, I found a problem in my code that might be responsible. I have updated the game with the corrected script, so hopefully it works. And hopefully it does not cause trouble for anyone else...
- Updated to Version 1.3.702 - 10 March 2026
New Camera MovementI heard you, I was just not good enough to do it. Now I figured out how to program the game in a way that allows more tight camera movement, without having the player spin around in the wrong direction :) I noticed that this method also removes a lot of the visual anomalies that always bothered me. Had I known it would eliminate these visual issues, I would have attempted this much sooner.
- Update to Version 1.3.701 - 8 March 2026
Game Crashing on Start (for some players)It seems my last update did not fix the bug where the game would crash on starting. I believe this one may solve the problem. I think the bug has to do with the way certain game folders are named in the script. I encountered this issue on another game, and realized I am using the same script to name these folder. So I fixed the save folder name, and thought it would resolve the problem here too. But apparently it did not!But then I realized, I am also using the same script to name the language folders, not just the save folders. So I have gone through and made sure to fix those too, in this update. Please reach out if you are still experiencing this.NOTE: You may have to restart Steam to prompt the game to update.Try the Legacy Version 1.1.7If it is still crashing, you can install an older version of the game for now, this has helped in every cas…
- Game Updated to Version 1.3.7 - 7 March 2026
Update: The Demo has just been updated too. Three new translations are available! Now you can play Islands of the Caliph in Indonesian, Spanish and Portuguese. Go to the options panel from the main menu, go to languages, and select the language of your choice. If you are just installing the game (or free DEMO) for the first time, the game should prompt you to choose your language when you start it up for the first time. Minor ProblemsIndonesian, Spanish and Portuguese version may have some slight issues. I noticed that the menus are not all aligned perfectly, so you may see some overlapping words. Here you can see some of the Statistics are using too much space. I am looking for any suggestions on how this can be improved. I do not plan to change the font size, so it would be great if anyone could suggest better (shorter) terminology. For the German translation, several Germans suggested…
- Island RPG Bundle - 9 November 2025

- Game Updated to Version 1.3.6 - 16 October 2025
Chinese Language (Official Version)A very supportive and industrious player has translated the game into Chinese! I was able to go through and make sure it fits in the UI and that there are no obvious errors. But of course I may have missed some details. Also, I checked some of the more sensitive passages to make sure the original meaning is conveyed, by google translating the Chinese back into English. It comes across as a bit strange, but over all I believe the meanings are correct. If you encounter something in the Chinese script that sounds really strange, please let me know. German LanguageAlso, recently (in case you missed it) the game was also updated with a German version. Fixed Missing TextIn the player's inventory, under Statistics, there were some details missing in the most recent builds. I have made sure these details have been re-incorporated into the game.
- Game Updated to Version 1.3.5 - 15 October 2025
Note: Chinese Language also included in latest build German Language (Official Version)I was able to get a real German speaker to review all the German language files and store page description. It is still in a preliminary testing phase as there are some small bugs that require work, but overall it seems to function as designed. The game will now prompt users for their preferred language when they first start it. You can change the language again later in the options menu. Other LanguagesOnce again, I am stating my intention to bring the game into many languages. It is much more complex and time consuming than I originally anticipated, so sorry about all the delays. I also apologize for having to use machine translation for these updates, as I do not have staff or budget to accomplish all of this with a native speaker at this time. But the game files and store page have been proof-read…
- Testing Branch Updated to Version 1.3.4 - 12 October 2025
German LanguageI was able to get a real German speaker to review all the German language files and store page description. It is still in a preliminary testing phase as there are some small bugs that require work, but overall it seems to function as designed. To access the current, German language version of the game you will need to activate the "public_testing" branch of the game. To do so, in your Steam Library, go to "Islands of the Caliph > Properties > Betas" and select "public_testing" from the drop down menu. But the ga…
- Testing Branch Updated to Version 1.3.1 - 8 February 2025
I was able to iron out all the bugs in the language script. Note: this does not mean the translation is good or even fully tested yet. But if there are problems, those are likely to be in the individual text files, and not in the game's code.
- Testing Branch Updated to 1.3.0 - 9 December 2024
This update has completely revamped the game's text system to allow for Unicode text. This will make it possible to introduce new languages, something I had always intended for the game to have. Testing Branch and Disclaimer It's important to note that this is only in the optional "public_testing" branch as of this time. It contains a very preliminary German language version of the game. Please be aware, the translation is not complete, it is basically a google translated text for now. Once I iron out all the bugs, I plan to get a proper translation made. Also, as I mentioned, there are still some bugs in the system. Game updates that appear on the bottom of the screen appear incorrectly at this time. The dialogue has not all been 100% tested just yet either. However, the basic building blocks of making a proper translation of the game are now in place. Trouble The trouble with doing th…
- Update to Version 1.2.9 - 10 July 2024
Save Slots The game had a bug where you could accidentally save your game into the wrong save slot. This would produce a number of unfortunate side effects like losing inventory and map information. The game should now prevent this accidental changing of save slots.
- Update to Version 1.2.8 - 30 June 2024
Window Size I have updated the options menu to increment the window size differently. Instead of increments of 1 unit, the game now increments the window size in units of 640. So when you push right, it will go from a width of 640 to 1280, then 1920 and so on. It will still be limited to the size of your monitor. Default Keys Instead of having strafe left and right controlled by the left and right arrows (those are cul (cursor left) and cur (cursor right) in the older versions of the game by default) they are now "A" and "D", and turn left and right has been changed from "A" and "D" to "Q" and "E" which seems to be standard for most grid based dungeon crawlers. But, because "Q" and "E" were the default keys for the Quest Log and Activate/Attack buttons, those have been changed to "L" for Quest Log, and "K" for Activate/Attack. If you have already started playing the game or changed your…
- Update to Version 1.2.7 - 16 April 2024
Inventory Bug Thanks to some fantastic player feedback I was able to resolve (I think) the inventory bug where moving and managing inventiory coudl cause stacked items to disappear. It turned out that pressing space more than once, when selecting the number of items caused the issue. It seems very obvious in hindsight, but I can say that this particular issue is resolved. If there is any other trigger that can cause inventory to vanish, I am not aware of it. Unconscious message The character falling unconscious would show a text explaining that you can either continue or load a saved game. Well I have updated this simple message to one that is a little more representative of the actual choice players are about to make,. I hope this helps!
- Cyplopean - another Dungeon Crawler - 2 April 2024
Introducing Cyclopean If you enjoyed Islands of the Caliph, you may find this short project I made interesting. It was made in 3 days for the Dungeon Crawler Jam 2024 over on the itch website. 3 Day Game Development Making something in 3 days required borrowing things from some of my previous games, so you may recognize some of the artwork. Turn-Based Dungeon Crawler Cyclopean is a turn-based dungeon crawler with roguelike elements. It has a somewhat procedurally generated dungeon, with Lovecraft inspired monsters, and a story that hearkens loosely back to the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. Short and Not So Sweet The game is very short, and can be played (and won) within 10 - 15 minutes or so. Like traditional roguelikes it will summaries your success or failure at the and. You can view reports of up to 10 of your best playthroughs from the main menu. (not my best score) Cats It also ha…
