- Dev Diary: Introducing Threat levels - 19 August 2025
Greetings, Commanders!Kevin here, back again with another Developer Diary and today we'll be talking about a brand new feature - Threat LevelsWe’re really excited about this one and it’s probably the biggest change to the game since launch, and will feature in our upcoming Update 4. What are Threat levelsThreat Levels allow you to crank up the challenge in every region, letting you take on all 4 Regions with tougher enemies that hit harder, take more damage, and keep you on your toes. There are 5 difficulty levels in each Region. Completing 3 Directives at a given level earns you Medals that unlock additional Threat Levels, but not in a strictly linear order - you’ll need to complete Threat Levels in later regions before you can tackle the hardest Threat Levels in Region 1, for instance. Why Threat LevelsIn a nutshell, Threat Levels give the player more to do in the game but also they:…
- Dev Diary: Overhauling Overclocks! - 15 August 2025
Greetings, Commanders!Kevin is back again with another Developer Diary! This time we’re delving into our planned overhaul of the Overclocks system. Thanks to your invaluable feedback, we found ways to make each run feel more unique and satisfying. Overclocks can be equipped to Mechs in the Mech Yard after earning enough Power (granted by Modules). These give your Mechs a definitive edge during combat, such as by dealing more damage against bosses or reviving your Mech once it reaches 0 HP. However, we felt that this system was going underused for a few reasons: Limited varietyClear winners for most OP Overclocks (Phoenix Protocol *cough*)Hidden away in the Mech YardGrindy to earn Power for Overclock slots In our new system, coming in Update 4 along with VR Mode on 21 August, Overclocks are now accessible through collecting rewards during gameplay. Their other core mechanics remain simil…
- Dev Diary #4: The Cover Debate Conclusion - 13 August 2025
Hey everyone, Kevin here again with another Dev Diary! First off, apologies for the gap in between Dev Diaries, we have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes getting the game ready for the next Major Update and I’m really looking forward to doing a deeper dive into the contents over the coming week. The focus of this Dev Diary though is the Cover debate, and our conclusion. Thanks again to everyone who jumped in to give feedback on this, I know cover has been a point of contention for many (including within the dev team) - you’ve all been brilliant about pointing out the good, the bad, and the “huh, that’s weird” moments. If you missed our earlier post, here’s the short version: Grit and Valor originally launched with 1-sided cover - walls would only protect you from one direction. Based on your feedback (and a healthy dose of “but… a wall’s a wall, right?”), we decided to trial 2-…

- Making Grit and Valor Accessible - 25 July 2025
Greetings, Commanders! Accessibility is central to our design philosophy. We believe games are better when everyone can play. In this post, we’d like to walk you through the accessibility features we’ve implemented in Grit and Valor – 1949 and share a bit about how we approached them. Prefer to sit back and watch? We cover this content in the video below: 🎨 Visual Accessibility Colourblind Settings Unit allegiance and item rarity are partly distinguished by colour, which can be a barrier for colourblind players. To address this, we’ve introduced: Dedicated Colourblind Modes for protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia. Text Labels for Rarity, so you’ll always see “Common,” “Rare,” etc., alongside the colour. Custom Colour Selection, allowing players to choose hues that suit their specific vision. We understand that disabilities including colour blindness exist on a spectrum. It’s not j…

- Dev Diary #3: Shifting progression Emphasis - 6 June 2025
Hey everyone – Kevin here again with another Dev Diary! First off, a big thank you for all the positive feedback on the latest update, it really means a lot to the team. We’re very happy to see it landing well with so many of you. That said, we know there’s still plenty of work to do, so please keep the feedback coming! This week, I wanted to talk a bit about progression. We’ve been hearing from some players that the game can feel a bit grindy, like runs don’t stand much of a chance unless you’ve already sunk a good amount of time into upgrading your squad at the Resistance Base. When we set out to make Grit and Valor, our goal was to create that classic roguelite loop: try, fail, learn, improve, repeat. But from your feedback, it sounds like that loop is leaning more toward frustration than fun in some cases.Just before I get into what we're thinking, I will mention that Update #1 went s…
- Post-Launch Update 2: Chain of Command - 2 June 2025
Greetings, Commanders! With this update, our goal is to put tactical command firmly in your hands. We're introducing new tools to coordinate your squad with greater precision, whether it’s by locking onto high-value targets, setting unit-specific priorities, or issuing instant regroup orders in the heat of battle. Every change is designed to deepen your strategic options and reward smart decision-making on the field. Tactical Improvements New Command: Regroup When things get messy, you need to pull back fast and smart. That’s where Regroup comes in. One command, and every unit in your squad will rally to a point you choose. No fumbling, no delay. You can issue it with a quick click of the Regroup button at the bottom right of your HUD, or by using your assigned keyboard or gamepad binding. Use it wisely, it might just save your squad. New System: Target Priorities Outnumbered? Surrounde…
- Dev Diary #2: Cover Deep Dive - 23 May 2025
Hey everyone – Kevin here again with another Dev Diary! This time, we’re diving deeper into one of the core gameplay mechanics: Cover. Since launch, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback about how cover works in the game – especially around our decision to make it 1-sided (offers protection in only one direction) instead of 2-sided (protection from both directions). To be honest, most of the feedback has leaned critical, or at least confused. Outside of our dev team, not many players have spoken in favor of 1-sided cover – and even within the team, there are folks who’d prefer the 2-sided approach. These kinds of design choices are always tricky during development, so I wanted to share a bit of insight into how we made the call, and what the pros and cons of each setup look like. 1-sided Cover Pros: Encourages more strategic positioning – players need to be mindful of where enemies are coming…
- Dev Diary #1: Post-Launch Reflections - 16 May 2025
Hi everyone, Kevin here — Producer on the project. It’s now been around six weeks since the game launched, and we’ve had some time to reflect on the release, the state of the game, and all the feedback we've received. I wanted to take a moment to share some of those reflections with you and give a clearer picture of where we’re heading. Launch and First Impressions Game launches are never easy. You spend years building something, then release it into the world and hope that players connect with it as deeply as you do. It’s an emotional moment — a mix of relief, joy, and (let’s be honest) a bit of fear, and a lot of hitting "refresh" on Steam reviews! That said, we’re really proud of the game we released. The launch went smoothly overall, and while reviews have ranged from okay to good, we’re taking everything on board. A 77% review score in the strategy genre isn’t bad — especially give…
