- Devlog #17 for 0.3.0.0 - We are back to it! - 13 September 2026
Hi everyone! We had a lovely time meeting up at Gamescom. After working on this game for the last five years, meeting each other in real life for the first time was awesome! We had a great time exploring both upcoming games and some old favorites, and giving away pins and T-shirts was a lot of fun too. But now, we are happy to be home and back to working on Unbridled! (Jonna and Amon at Gamescom) The Playtest! First of all, we are so grateful to everyone who played the playtest and took the time to give us feedback. Over the last two weeks, we have been going through everything we received, deciding what we want to take with us moving forward and figuring out how we can make those changes happen. One of the first things we want to talk about is the controls. It became very clear from your feedback that the majority of you preferred the old control scheme, so we will be reverting back to…
- The Unbridled: That Horse Game Playtest Is Now Live! 🐴 - 28 August 2026
Hi everyone! It is finally time for us to open our anticipated Unbridled: That Horse Game playtest! In this post, we will explain how to join the test branch on Steam, what you can expect, and what we would especially love for you to test and give us feedback on. Before You Start First, we want to put out a small disclaimer: not every aspect of the new features is finished yet. This is a playtest after all! This includes things like the mane, tail, and forelock. Disregarding their movement, we would still love to get your feedback on the general look of the models and the behavior of the textures. Something not feeling quite right with a specific coat? Let us know so we can look into improving it for the update! Horse Interactions & Animations When it comes to mounting and interactions between the player and horse, there is also some fine-tuning that still needs to be done. For example,…
- Devlog #16 for 0.3.0.0 - World & Horse Care Overhaul - 9 August 2026
World And Horse Updates Updated Horse Needs As part of this update, we have revisited the horse needs system. The hunger bar has been removed entirely. Instead, horses now rely on their daily hay requirement, while grain serves as a way to provide useful buffs rather than simply satisfying hunger. Snacks remain in the game and continue to be an important way to strengthen the bond between you and your horse. This creates a more meaningful balance between convenience and horse care, giving players another choice to consider when managing their stable. Updated Stall Behavior We've reworked the stall interactions for horses of every size. The GIF below compares the smallest and the largest horse. Smaller horses naturally need to lift their heads to reach the stall hatch, while the largest horses lower their heads to fit through it. These adjustments make every horse size feel much more bel…
- Devlog #15 for 0.3.0.0 - More Than Just New Horses - 2 August 2026
Looking Back at Our Journey Hello everyone! Game development is a funny thing. When you work on something every single day, it's easy to focus on what's next. There's always another feature to build, another animation to polish, another bug to fix. Recently, we took a moment to look back at everything we've accomplished since we started developing Unbridled. To be honest... we surprised ourselves. What started as a solid foundation has gradually evolved into something much bigger. Almost every major system in the game has been expanded, rebuilt or completely redesigned along the way. Today we'd like to share some of the biggest milestones we've reached together. Building Better Horses Image of new vs old Our horses have always been at the heart of Unbridled. Over the course of development we've completely rebuilt their animation system, allowing for smoother movement, more natural trans…

- Devlog #14 for 0.3.0.0 - Genetics, Abilities & the Future of Horse Breeding - 7 May 2026
Here's a breakdown of what we've been working on since the last Devlog: DNA System Based on Breed Standards Our genetic and coat system is not random. It is built around real-world breed standards and genetic logic. This means that each breed in the game has: A defined set of allowed coat colors Specific genetic restrictions Different probabilities for certain traits Visual expressions that reflect the breed’s real-world characteristics As a result, a Friesian will never behave like a Mustang genetically, and a Fjord will always maintain its distinct visual identity. Extensive Visual Variation Within Each Color To achieve depth and realism, each base coat color is not treated as a single fixed appearance, but rather as a family of variations. For example: A standard bay can appear differently depending on hue variation and brightness Genetic overlays further influence the final result S…
- Devlog #13 for 0.3.0.0 - Horse variety, calendar rework & performance boosts - 28 March 2026
Since the last info post we've been working on several core systems to improve structure, immersion, and overall performance. And of course on the horses as well! Here's a breakdown of what's new: Horses One of our main priorities has been refining the horse coat colors. We've spent time improving how colors and shades work together, allowing for more natural variation and depth. In this update, we're showcasing images that demonstrate how horse colors can vary in hue and tone, giving each horse a more unique appearance. We also want to demonstrate how these two breeds can look in the game. The Haflinger and the Fjord. As you can tell there is differences in both how the Pangare/Mealy and the Dun can appear on the horses. This allows for much more diverse horses. We also recently hosted a community event where players were invited to create reference images for different horse markings,…
- Information to Update 0.3.0.0 - 27 February 2026
Hello everyone! 🐴💙 We know many of you were looking forward to Update 0.3.0.0 releasing in February, and we're truly sorry that we won't be able to meet that timeframe. We also want to take a moment to explain why and give you a bit of insight into what has been happening behind the scenes: Since founding our company, this is the first time in our lives that we've had real experience running our own business. Our studio is based in Hungary, while we're originally from Germany & Sweden. New laws, tax regulations, language barriers, and general bureaucratic differences created challenges that we didn't fully anticipate. Alongside developing the game, we also had to learn how to properly build and manage a company. That required more time and energy than we initially expected. Another major factor is the new horse model. With this change, we essentially had to rebuild everything related…

- Devlog #12 for 0.3.0.0 - Stable Management, Riding Lessons and Coat Colours - 25 January 2026
During the weeks of January 12th to January 23th, 2026, we worked on the following features: Stable Manager The Stable Manager has been redesigned to improve clarity and ease of use. Navigation between the different menu sections is now significantly more intuitive, and the overall layout of the menu content has been refined and streamlined. The updated design focuses on better readability, clearer structure, and a more polished visual presentation, making stable management smoother and more enjoyable than before. Riding Lessons & Dialogue System The Riding Lessons game mode is designed to serve as a riding tutorial for new players, but it also plays an important role in testing and showcasing our new dialogue system in action. Within the Riding Lessons, players will learn the fundamentals of riding while also having the opportunity to practice and refine specific riding skills. Bridle…
- Devlog #11 for 0.3.0.0 - New Hairstyles & World Updates - 10 January 2026
This is our first devlog of 2026. We took a short production break from December 21st, 2025, to January 4th, 2026. During the week of January 5th to January 9th, 2026, we worked on the following features: Horse Hairstyles We’re finishing up the mane and tail models and textures, and we’ve also added a new Arabian mane variant. Hair now comes in four different qualities: curly, wavy, straight, and rough. These variations are available for tails and the longer mane styles. Shorter styles like the shaved and short fluffy manes won’t use the different texture qualities. The Arabian mane, however, supports all four hair qualities. Another new feature: you’ll be able to cut the mane, tail, and forelock to your desired length. This can be done directly in the horse editor in the stables, or during horse creation. On top of that, the long mane, Arabian mane, and short fluffy mane can now be spl…
- Devlog #10 for 0.3.0.0 - More Freedom, Better Jumps & New Features - 21 December 2025
In the week from December 15 to 20, 2025, we worked on the following elements of the game: Saving & Loading To save a lot of programming time in the long run, the existing save and load system was significantly expanded. In addition, we are planning to give players more creative freedom in the future. This will make it possible to place custom objects such as raised garden beds or to put storage locations for horse equipment and hay directly on the ground, allowing your horse to interact with these objects. Expansion of the Jump System The jump system was further expanded: The height and distance of jumps are now much more clearly visible through the animations The angle of approach is taken into account and realistically influences the jump Manes & Styles All manes are now almost finished. In addition, several new variations were added, including: Fluffy manes A new style with various…
- Devlog #9 for 0.3.0.0 - New Riding Lessons, Map Rework & Visual Expansions - 13 December 2025
During the week of December 8th to 13th, 2025, we worked on the following elements of the game: Riding Lessons (Tutorial) We started programming the tutorial in the form of riding lessons. These riding lessons will be selectable in the riding school in the future and can be completed similarly to the show jumping training sessions. However, the riding lessons will be completed with the riding school’s horses and not with your own. Our goal is to provide all players – regardless of their experience with horse games – with an easy and understandable introduction to the game. Since our riding system is being expanded and does not follow the classic standard, a well-structured tutorial is especially important. Dialogue (Text) We have reworked our dialogue system for future quests as well as general conversations that may take place with NPCs. The first use of this new system will be within…
- Devlog #8 for 0.3.0.0 - New Flora, Reworked Gear & Physics Tests - 7 December 2025
Release Postponement The planned update 0.3.0.0 will be postponed until at the latest February next year. The reason for this is several factors: Ongoing tax processing that requires additional time Hardware replacement, as a power supply unexpectedly failed An underestimation of the workload for some of the new content However, our top priority remains clear: A clean, stable, and well-playable update for you. This week (December 1–6) we worked on: Reworking the Status Values We have begun making all status values fundamentally functional or reworking them. These include: Health Hunger Cleanliness Fatigue Performance & Code Optimization Many existing code structures were revised or completely rewritten in order to: improve performance make processes more stable keep future expansions easier to integrate Weather The current weather state is now saved correctly and restored after switchin…
- Devlog #7 for 0.3.0.0 - Show Jumping Training & New Difficulty Levels - 29 November 2025
This week, between November 24th and November 29th, we worked on expanding and improving the Show Jumping Mode. One of the biggest additions is a brand-new difficulty system, allowing you to tailor each ride to your preferred level of challenge, from relaxed warm-ups to precise elite-level runs. Warm-Up A perfect mode for practicing or getting comfortable. No time limit No penalty points Directional arrow guiding you to the next obstacle Strides are not required Novice Ideal for new players learning how to navigate a course. Direction indicator to the next obstacle Many penalty points allowed You have more time than usual Strides are not required Advanced For players looking for a more engaging challenge. A normal amount of penalty points is allowed Normal time limit Strides are counted but not required Elite This is where precision matters most. Normal time limit A normal amount of pen…
- Devlog #6 for 0.3.0.0 - 3D Progress & New Map in Development - 22 November 2025
In the week from November 17 to November 22, 2025, we focused more strongly on the 3D aspect. During this time, numerous new objects were created and existing ones were revised. Even though this devlog is a bit shorter this time, we hope you enjoy the sneak peeks and get a small insight into our current progress. Revision of the Campgound map We have started expanding and reworking the current campsite map. It will become significantly larger and will feature several small places to discover. There will be various camping spots, natural water sources such as a lake, as well as a forest ranger who lives in this woodland. We hope you will enjoy many wonderful trail rides there. A new map for multiplayer and competitions In addition to the campsite map, a completely new map is also being created, specifically designed for competitions as well as for multiplayer mode. The plan is a slightly…
- Devlog #5 for 0.3.0.0 - Jump System, Breed Scaling & Dutch Warmblood - 15 November 2025
During the week of November 10th to 15th, 2025, we worked on the following elements of the game: Jumping System Overhaul We've begun overhauling our jumping system. While the previous version worked reliably and served its purpose, it couldn’t fully support the vision we have for the project. As part of this update, we also started reworking the jump animations. In the new system, these animations will dynamically adapt to the horse’s speed and the exact height of each obstacle, accurate down to the centimeter. Additionally, the approach angle will play an important role: approaching an obstacle too diagonally will affect the jump outcome, making a correct, straight approach more important than ever. Breed Shapes & Sizes The percentage breakdown of each horse's breed is now clearly visible, and the horse's size automatically adjusts to whichever breed is dominant. To achieve this, we ba…

- Devlog #4 for 0.3.0.0 - The First Horse AI Patterns and Completed Breed Models - 8 November 2025
The First Patterns of the New Horse AI As already mentioned in the previous devlog, we have started designing the new horse AI and have now implemented the first functional processes. The horse can now recognize where it is located, for example, in a pasture, in a stable box, or, newly added, when it is “nowhere.” This state means that the horse moves freely and is not bound to a specific area. This creates an independent behavior outside of fixed zones. Currently, we have integrated the following tasks into the Behavior Tree: Random Roaming: The horse randomly chooses a point within a defined radius or area and moves there, walking, trotting, or galloping depending on the distance to the target. Thanks to Root Motion, animation transitions, speeds, and steering (turning) are significantly more natural and smoother than before. Idle: The horse plays a random idle animation. In the futur…
- Devlog #3 for 0.3.0.0 - New Ability System & Horse AI in Progress - 1 November 2025
During the week of October 27 to November 1, we worked intensively on the ability system, improved numerous animations, and laid the groundwork for the new horse AI, which will make behavior even more realistic in the future. Revision of the Horse Manager The "Information" section in the horse manager has been revised to present the details of each horse more clearly and in a more structured way. In addition, the subcategories Genetics, Stats, and Victories have been added, allowing more information to be displayed and better organized. Revision of the Ability System The ability system has been completely redeveloped from scratch. Our community especially appreciated that horses could previously be trained over time through repeated actions, we are keeping this core principle but significantly expanding upon it. In the future, every horse, whether purebred, mixed, or hybrid, will be abl…
