I've said it many times before: L.A. Noire is the best videogame ever made. There's not a single thing quite like it: detective games have come and gone, but they've never fully managed to capture the clue-based sleuthing and detail-focused interrogation of Rockstar's seminal police sim. I've played Shadows of Doubt and The Sinking City, but Critical Hit Games' Nobody Wants to Die comes closest to transporting L.A. Noire's mission-based, investigative gameplay into a dystopian cyberpunk future that's reminiscent of CD Project Red's Cyberpunk 2077 . It's absolutely gorgeous and relatively short, with a story that keeps you on your toes and challenges your preconceptions. And, the best part? It's currently the free Epic game of this week. I've said it before and I'll say it again: LA Noire is the best videogame ever made. Its magnificent storytelling, faithful historical setting, and treatment of veteran life in post-WWII America puts it head and shoulders above any RPG I've ever played - and the soundtrack certainly helps, too. But, last year, Critical Hit Games' Nobody Wants to Die came along, almost giving LA Noire a run for its money with its snazzy art-deco cyberpunk setting and brain-teasing mysteries. Nobody Wants to Die begins with two 2010s storytelling flourishes that made me groan. First, we've got some dead wife hallucinations up in here, the favored psychiatric symptom of tough guy protagonists everywhere. The second was the main character, whose name I already forget, making a noise like "Hnnnnrrrraaaaagggh" and looking down at his hands clenching and unclenching while the screen kind of pulses and goes all blurry. LA Noire is one of those games that's always just been there for me. It was my favorite as a teenager, then I wrote my Master's thesis on it - wherever I have gone in life, Cole, Jack, Elsa, and the crew have followed. While some cross their fingers tight and hope for a sequel, I've always argued that we don't need an LA Noire 2; in fact a follow-up would just ruin the first game entirely. One of my favourite 'jokes'to do is parody Raymond Chandler, i.e. I shout "She had legs all the way up to her thighs!" and then laugh at myself. Chandlers's trademark "blonde to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window" kind of zingers are very hard to do well, so it's better to say you're doing Philip Marlow badly on purpose. The trailer for Nobody Wants To Die seems like it's self-seriousness is actually self-awareness. I mean, I kind of refuse to believe that hard-boiled future crime detective James Karra saying "I'm in the business of secrets... But it's more of an addiction... And I like 'em straight... No chaser..." while sipping from a glass of amber liquor isn't indulging in some amount of winking and nudging. Read more
