We're aware that some users face systematic crashes when using DLSS and we're sorry for that. When I had a chance to preview Aphelion back in February, I was initially pretty optimistic about it. DON’T NOD is famous for their storytelling, and seeing them step outside their comfort zone of choice-based narrative experiences was genuinely interesting. Not only that, Creative Director Florent Guillaume described a game made that clearly had a lot of passion and thought put into it, so I was excited to see where it would go. The preview I got with it was brief, and perhaps that led my imagination to build up the game higher than it should have. While Aphelion isn’t a particularly bad game, it’s not a particularly memorable one either, and I can’t help but wonder if the change in genre affected a change in the storytelling DON’T NOD is so well known for. Hi everyone! In this dev blog, we wanted to talk more about the planet Persephone. We released a trailer at the Future Games Show recently to showcase it too, so definitely check that out in case you missed it. How Persephone influences gameplay Persephone can be considered the main challenge to overcome in Aphelion. Having an uncharted alien planet as a playground gives a lot of opportunities to create tension through only navigation and traversal. Ariane is mostly on natural and difficult terrain throughout the game, while Thomas visits manmade structures, which in both cases fit the gameplay intended for those characters. The planet is a source of gameplay inspiration, as it is mostly made of ice. We implemented features that add more depth to navigation, such as ‘thin ice’, fragile ground that collapses if players don’t walk carefully on it. Ariane faces a lot of natural phenomena,…

Following our gameplay trailer, we want to talk a little more about the tension in the game and what you can expect from Ariane and Thomas’s gameplay.Creating tension through gameplayWe want Persephone to feel truly hostile and for players to feel that Ariane and Thomas could lose their lives at any moment on this dangerous and unknown planet. Game overs can happen abruptly whether you’re on a dangerous climb or trying to avoid the Nemesis. There is no combat in Aphelion because we wanted the Nemesis to feel like a predator that cannot be killed or harmed but only avoided. Neither character can fight this totally unknown creature with any human-made weapon, and so a lot of the tension comes from knowing the danger it poses and accepting your vulnerability, which forces players to think ahead and analyze your environment.
