  • The Alice: Madness Returns dev team 'made history,' American McGee says: It was 'the first team ever to tell EA *** and (kinda) get away with it' - 24 April 2026

lice creator American McGee has been in something of a chatty mood lately. Just a couple days after relating a tale about how he drew inspiration from a Valve demo he saw while working on Quake 2 at id, he shared another story about Alice: Madness Returns , offering a fun glimpse into game dev financing, dildo snails, and maybe why EA may have decided not to move ahead with a third game in the series... • The sequel to one of my favorite 3D platformers always had a janky PC port, but a huge fanmade patch just dropped in hopes to fix it - 16 November 2025

merican McGee's Alice is simply sensational , what with its weird, janky hybrid of shooter-inspired action and surreal 3D platforming, and though the sequel Madness Returns didn't hit me quite as hard, it's still well worth your time . The problem, for PC gamers at least, is that Madness Returns has a pretty rough port that's only gotten harder to work with since its release in 2011; until now, anyway... Read more.

  • American McGee tells EA the "roadmap is waiting" on an Alice sequel - 30 June 2024

Everyone wants what they can't have. Knowing something is out of reach always makes it more desirable, and videogames are no exception. Beyond Good and Evil 2, the full launch of Star Citizen, and even the fabled Half-Life 3. If there's any chance we'll get it, we want it. The sequel to 2011's Alice Madness Returns is one such game, and while director American McGee says his part is done, he has a message for EA: "The roadmap is waiting." Read the rest of the story... The sequel to Alice Madness Returns , titled Alice Asylum, has been scrapped by EA according to designer American McGee. Alice: Madness Returns , the sequel to American McGee's Alice , hasn't had a great time of it on Steam. • Alice: Asylum's 'narrative outline' might be the closest fans get to American McGee's Alice 3 - 22 August 2021

It's been a long time since anything substantial was heard about Alice: Asylum , otherwise known as American McGee's Alice 3 - the dark fantasy action-platformer take on Alice In Wonderland. Now creator American McGee has released a full 'narrative outline' for the game, so fans can experience Asylum's entire story - which is great, because the game is a long way off. The two Alice games were released by EA in 2000 and 2011 - the tenth anniversary of Alice: Madness Returns was last June - and were well-regarded by fans, despite being relatively straightforward action-platformers. The dark and unique take on the Alice stories were a big part of the appeal, for sure. American McGee has been working on a third game - Alice: Asylum - since around 2017, and has been steadily releasing pieces of artwork and info on the Alice Patreon since then. This weekend McGee put out possibly the biggest…

  • Have You Played Alice: Madness Returns? - 4 June 2019

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. When your name is Alice you either get people singing that song at you, you know, that song (none of us think it is funny please don t do it), or cracks about Alice In Wonderland. I was either going to have to play all this American McGee nonsense or insist that I would never ever play it ever. In fact, I played Alice: Madness Returns before the first one, and I do think it s the better of the two. (more…)

  • Denial Dresses and Chaos Containers - 11 July 2018

Some wonderful creativity flowing from our community of Insane Children over on Patreon into the pre-production of Alice Asylum. Now we're working through a series of new Dress Designs based on the areas in Wonderland Alice will visit in this new adventure. Those areas as based (in part) on the stages of grief and on Alice's confrontation with PTSD. In this image we see Alice in her new "Denial Dress" - a design which, on the face of it, calls back to innocent days gone by... with a slight hint at that trauma which lies ahead. Did you catch it? https://cdn.steampulse.org/steam/asset?u=https%3A%2F%2Fsteamcdn-a.akamaihd.net%2Fsteamcommunity%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fclans%2F3952862%2F5b92a79bcc43d8b54bcb54dc0160dbf2ca1df805.jpg We're also working on the design and presentation of the Chaos Coin - a physical coin we'll produce for Alice fans which grants ownership of a virtual coin in Alice: Asylum. On that virtual coin you can embed a name and message…

  • American McGee: "stop bugging me about Alice 3" - 18 July 2017

Oh, you want a third instalment in the Alice series? That's nice, but you can stop bugging American McGee about it, please. That's the thrust of a new blogpost written by the creator, where he explicitly addresses the (horrifyingly persistent) questions he gets regarding the future of the psychedelic platformer. It's all pretty straightforward: EA owns and controls the Alice brand, while American McGee does not. Nor will the publisher allow him to "crowd fund, raise investment for, or otherwise self-develop, self-fund, or self-publish any interactive version of Alice." That sounds pretty bleak, but it's not. In fact, American McGee seems pretty confident that there will be a new Alice game at some point, but he doesn't know when. "EA are aware that you’d like a new Alice game and that RJ Berg and I would be happy to assist in the design, writing, and deve…

  • Little China Doll: How Spicy Horse Imagined Alice: Madness Returns - 18 December 2013

This is the latest in a series of articles about the art technology of games, in collaboration with the particularly handsome Dead End Thrills . Alice: Madness Returns is a very special action game, a piece of Lewis Carroll fan fiction conceived by an American (named American, naturally) and illustrated largely by the Chinese, a people not known for their absurdism. Unfortunately it’s also a classic victim of checklist game criticism and marketing, not to mention it’s the worst possible thing to reviewers working under deadline: long. Make no mistake, the business of game reviewing is a lot like the business of eating large amounts of Jacob’s Cream Crackers in hot and rowdy East End basements. To put it another way, all games get tiring when you play them past your bedtime. The sequel to American McGee s Alice isn’t great (8/10), solid (7/10), flawed (6/10) or av…
