  • The Flare Path: Steam Snips - 3 July 2020

When I was teenager buying a budget computer game involved pedalling your penny-farthing along cobbled streets until you happened upon a branch of GAME, Electronics Boutique, WHSmith, or Woolworths, entering said store, selecting a hardback-sized box largely filled with air, and then handing a shop assistant a crumpled banknote with a picture of Florence Nightingale on one side. Today, my penny-farthing sits rusting in the shed, most of the local game emporiums are now nail bars or coffee shops, and a tenner buys ten golden oldies not one. Modern life is a curate’s Cadbury Creme Egg and no mistake. (more…)

  • Gearbox's WW2 shooter Brothers in Arms is getting a TV adaptation - 27 April 2020

Gearbox's much-loved World War 2 shooter series Brothers in Arms has joined the ever-growing line-up of video games to get the TV adaptation treatment. As revealed by the Hollywood Reporter , the new adaptation will be based on Gearbox's 2005 Brothers in Arms effort, Road to Hill 30, which told the story of a group of paratroopers mis-dropped and separated behind enemy lines during the D-Day invasion of Normandy - inspired by the real-life experiences of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment during Mission Albany. The TV show will reportedly deviate from Road to Hill 30's story somewhat, charting the journey of eight men as they attempt to rescue their colonel from enemy forces, and will expand considerably on the game by incorporating elements of the real-life Exercise Tiger, a botched Allied D-Day rehearsal that was hushed up following the deaths of 800 US servicemen. • Gearbox: classic Brothers in Arms planned - 29 August 2011

The Brothers in Arms franchise will return to its more sombre, historically-accurate roots after the release of OTT left-turn Furious 4, developer Gearbox has announced. According to Gamespot , when asked at a PAX panel over the weekend whether Furious 4's colourful new direction represented the future of the brand, studio boss Randy Pitchford insisted that it hasn't forgotten about the more traditional adventures of Sgt. Baker and his company. "We're going to do more of that," he said. "Absolutely, that's happening." Announced during Ubisoft's E3 show earlier this week, the Inglourious Basterds-apeing Furious 4 sees your team of maniacal squaddies rampaging across Europe in an attempt to do over Hitler himself. Prior to that, the last we saw of the franchise was the considerably more level-headed Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway back in 2008. Video:

  • Ancel attacks gratuitous FPS violence - 13 June 2011

As it has done for the past few years, the FPS genre dominated E3 this month. However, as exemplified by the likes of Brothers In Arms: Furious 4, Far Cry 3, Rage and Modern Warfare 3, the class of 2011 seemed to boast a particularly brutal streak. Ubisoft's creative lynchpin Michel Ancel – the man behind the Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil series – wasn't impressed. Speaking to Eurogamer in Los Angeles last week, he argued that it's time for the industry to grow up and display a little more artistry in its approach to storytelling. "I don't like it," he complained, before suggesting developers should look to Hollywood for inspiration. "Yeah, I think violence is not the problem, the problem is when it's not done... if you look for example at Saving Private Ryan, the Spielberg movie. It's violent but there is really dramatic and artistic storytelling behind it. "The problem I have with vio…

  • E3 2011: New Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 announced - 6 June 2011
