- Field of Glory: Kingdoms - Burghers and Bombards | Wrapping up - 20 March 2026
It is now time to wrap up our Dev Diaries, as the release of the second DLC is getting very close. Let us take a short tour of the main features presented in the previous diaries, for those who might have missed them, or simply to provide a useful summary.New campaignsFirst, the expansion introduces two new campaigns that significantly extend the chronological scope of Kingdoms. The Late Campaign begins in 1223 and presents a world already deeply transformed by the decline of several earlier powers. The Byzantine Empire, for example, no longer exists, and at least three states now compete to restore it. Some nations are more structured and politically mature, regions are more developed, and the economy generally allows for larger and more professional armies. The Mongol expansion forms the central strategic shock of this period. Their armies sweep across the eastern steppes and threaten…

- Field of Glory: Kingdoms - Burghers and Bombards | Dev Diary #5 - 26 February 2026
With this expansion, Kingdoms introduces the largest campaign ever available in the game: the Mega Grand Campaign. It begins at the same starting point as the base game campaign but continues beyond the late campaign and concludes in 1492, a date chosen deliberately to mark the end of the medieval era and the threshold of a new age. This campaign makes use of the extended map introduced with DLC1, even if you do not own it! This decision guarantees the largest and most complete strategic experience possible, without compromise on geographical scope. Note though that certain features such as War Campaigns, Great Trade Routes, and regional Impediments remain tied to DLC1 ownership. For the optimal and complete experience, we strongly recommend having DLC1.The initial setup has been fully revised, incorporating the latest historical adjustments to cultures, regional control, and political ba…
- Field of Glory: Kingdoms – Burghers and Bombards | Dev Diary #4 out now - 6 February 2026
With the new expansion, Kingdoms introduces two major campaigns. The first is the vast Mega Grand Campaign, spanning from 1054 to 1470, which we will cover in detail in a future diary. The second is the late campaign beginning in 1223, and it is this one that concerns us today. The late campaign presents a profoundly different world from the early medieval landscape of the base game. The Mongols are sweeping across the eastern steppes, the Byzantine Empire has lost Constantinople, France and England are locked in prolonged conflict, and the Holy Roman Empire is plagued by internal rivalries. Russian principalities struggle under Mongol pressure, the Reconquista advances in Iberia, and new powers rise in Persia, Egypt, and India. In short, the political and military balance of the world has shifted dramatically, and national perks have been adjusted accordingly. This campaign does not merely…
- Field of Glory: Kingdoms - Burghers and Bombards | The New Art of War - 14 January 2026
From the moment a realm gains access to its first gunpowder units, the military landscape begins tochange irreversibly. This transition usually occurs when an army list reaches Tier IV, typically between 1350 and 1400depending on the nation. More advanced realms may reach this point earlier if they have accumulatedsufficient military expertise and maintain a well-educated capital. Gunpowder is not simply unlocked; it isearned through long-term investment in institutions, skills, and infrastructure. With the emergence of handgunners, culverins, and bombards, no fewer than fifteen new militarybuildings become available. Some focus on organizing and sustaining gunpowder production, others onadapting fortifications to this new threat, and several serve as intermediate steps that reflect the slow andcostly transformation of medieval warfare.Gunpowder on the BattlefieldCulverins represent the f…
- Field of Glory: Kingdoms - Burghers and Bombards | Dev Diary #2 - 16 December 2025
The second DLC for Kingdoms, Burghers and Bombards, also introduces what we call the advanced economy. The decision to add new concepts related to monetary income and expenditure stems from two main goals. First, to at least partially address the issue of monetary revenues becoming too easy to accumulate in the later stages of the game. Second, to bring an additional layer of historical plausibility, without falling into heavy-handed simulation. This advanced economy is built around three main pillars, with wide-ranging implications. It goes well beyond the simple management of coins and treasuries. The London Cloth Guild is very appealing thanks to its base ability, even before taking into account its additional ability unlocked with four populations working in trade. The first pillar is the introduction of an additional gold maintenance cost for buildings, applied in a very gradual way.…

- Field of Glory: Kingdoms - Burghers and Bombards | The Late campaign - 19 November 2025
Let’s start with the Late Campaign of 1223.It radically changes the shape of the game compared with the 1054 start. In a century and a half, themap has grown denser, borders have shifted or contracted, and several familiar powers are now mereshadows of their former selves (or gone entirely, farewell Fatimids and Seljuks). This is an age of morestructured monarchies, richer cities, but also harsher wars and systemic shocks, foremost among themthe arrival of the Mongols. The Mongols are already far along in 1223, but it will take them a few years to consolidate their gainsA storm is forming in the east (more precisely a major cyclonic front!). By the 1220s, Mongol armies arealready pushing deep into the Rus’ principalities and Persian Khorasan. Their raids probe local defenseswithout always holding territory, but the crushing victory over the Rus’ and Cumans at the River Kalkashows that wo…
