- Development Timeline - September Update - 9 September 2024
Development Timeline Hi Everyone, We had hoped to release a closed beta and updated trailer in Q4, however we made the decision to delay these until Q1 2025. We are making solid progress this year, but 4x games truly have a wide range of systems and interactions to create, probably more than any other genre. We want to make sure our closed beta gives an accurate representation of the depth we are planning. We released our first trailer as early as possible, to get the word out and gather supporters. We want the closed beta to have everything it needs to really show the game’s potential and make the best possible first (gameplay) impression. To this end, we are increasing our team’s size to meet our goals. Thanks for your patience and support! System Spotlight: Monster Customization The player will have customization options for all units. This gives the game more RPG-flavor and makes un…
- Development Timeline - Feburary Update - 19 February 2024
Development Timeline Hi Everyone, We want to update you on our development timeline. This is our best estimate at the moment, although it may change. 2024 -Q2/Q3 - First gameplay reveal (Edit: See Sept update) -Q4 - Start of closed beta tests. These will be recurring, small tests to help us balance and bug test the game 2025 -Continued closed beta tests -Steam Nextfest / Demo release -Game release We are working hard to finish the full gameplay reveal and then the next trailer which will hopefully really highlight what makes this game unique, compared to any other 4X/tactical game. Thanks for your continued support! Unit Spotlight: Lindwyrm The Lindwyrm is a powerful, high control cost monster. They specialize in outputting massive damage to enemy defensive lines with breath attacks. They also act on the frontline, as a damage-absorbing tank unit. As Lindwyrms grow they can evolve into…
- October progress update - 1 November 2023
Hero Customization Happy Halloween! Let's take a look at hero cosmetic customization. It's important that the player can easily pick out their heroes in battle. So, we are enabling heroes to modify hair styles, hair color, portraits and of course gender. Unit Spotlight: Slime Slimes are front-line, low control cost monsters. They specializes in defense and protecting your army. The Slime is also the most versatile monster, being able to upgrade to fit almost any role your army requires. Slimes start out as a simple defensive tank with a protection ability. As they grow they can evolve into 4 different paths to become a healer, mage, ranged, or improve their tanking abilities. Because they are a low control cost unit, they are able to fill gaps in army capabilities as they grow in strength.
- August progress update - 13 August 2023
Weapons and Crafting For the August update, we will cover weapon crafting in Monstrous Realms. Our goal for the crafting system is to have equipment customization (talismans in Monstrous Realms) like an RPG, without requiring too much time to customize each unit. To achieve this, talismans can be produced using patterns, which are customizable but can be reproduced easily. Patterns can be made using various unlocked components that give stat bonuses or in rare cases, special abilities. These components can be unlocked through various methods such as research, dungeon exploration, or diplomacy. The amount of components allowed in each talisman will increase with research and kingdom development. This is similar to how classic 4X's (MOO 2 for example) handled ship weapons and armor, with an added RPG flare to it. Unit Spotlight: Maju The Maju is a creature of dark magic, acting as an offe…
- July progress update - 7 July 2023
Research This past month we have been working on finishing up the research system for the strategic portion of the game. Research is one of the pillars of the 4X genre, so we've debated the direction we would take. Ultimately we decided on a standard tech tree, with multiple branches. This allows planning on the direction you want to take with each game, verses the randomized techs some newer 4Xs have. To improve replayability the branches will be customizable per game as a world setting. Each branch will roughly cover one area of the game with some blending between different types. Prismwing The Prismwing is a highly mobile flying monster. It excels at protecting allied units from spells as well as flanking and disrupting enemy spell casters. Prismwings use their flight to pass over enemies, allies, or obstacles to best position themselves. They start with anti-heal, which prevents ene…
- June progress update - 2 June 2023
Happy June! For June let’s talk about the Mud Golem and our design philosophy for units. Each unit can evolve into multiple classes, but those classes will generally fall into four categories: Frontline, support, damage or flanking. Damage can fall under range, melee, or magic-user. -Flanking units are strong fast units that can attack the backline and run away. -Damage units have high damage and either low hp or high control cost. -Support covers healers or buff/debuffers. -Frontline units can sustain more damage and try to prevent weaker units from taking damage. The Mud Golem is a frontline, defensive monster so its focus is on stopping enemy units from hurting the backline. They achieve this by disrupting enemy movement and ranged attacks. They start with mudsling, which blinds an enemy, making them more likely to miss attacks and reducing the range of their attacks. They are also a…
- May Progress Update - 4 May 2023
Hi Everyone! We are going to start posting monthly updates on the game development progress and highlight different gameplay aspects along the way. For May we are highlighting how squads are setup and one of our favorite monsters, the Bobakeet! Each squad in Monstrous Realms can contain up to 6 monsters and a hero. Each hero has a set max control of 120, while each of these monsters has varying control costs based on their individual strength. A Dragon is much stronger than a Bobakeet, therefore you can control fewer of them in each squad. The Bobakeet is a front line, low control cost monster. He specializes in displacing enemy positions with his powerful tongue, dealing damage and causing negative status effects. He has multiple evolution paths including the Poison Bobakeet (...Poison abilities) and Vampakeet (Lifesteal abilities) I hope you all have a great May! We are planning on po…
