- Dev Diary #6: Repairs - 10 June 2026
Hey everyone, welcome to Never's End Dev Diary #6!I'm Ryan, the game director, and today I want to talk about something a lot of you have been asking about since the combat demo launched: how do you repair your items in Never's End? The combat demo doesn’t currently include a way to repair items, and it’s something we get asked about fairly often. The full game does feature a repair system, but we’re still working on the user experience. It will likely be patched into the demo at some point, but let's dig into how it works in the full game!Everything degrades with use in Never’s End. That applies to the bodies you possess, as well as your gear. The repair system lets you restore hit points of weapons and armor.Item degradation helps keep the game from getting stale. It creates opportunities for you to change gear and adapt to each item’s strengths and weaknesses. We want it to be diffic…

- New tactics RPG Never's End blends Final Fantasy with the turbulent spell combos of Divinity: Original Sin - 11 March 2026
Never's End is the new strategy RPG from a former Destiny developer in which you lead a party of possessed villagers against a ravening (yet cuddly) tide of undead. At a glance, it's an elegantly muted Final Fantasy Tactics , with doll-sized characters on a spinnable grid-based map. In the hands, it's surprisingly reminiscent of Larian's Divinity: Original Sin games, with a nerdy application of thermodynamics that lets you transform each map into a vortex of mist, flame and increasingly naked skeletons. - Dev Diary #5: Water - 22 January 2026
Hey everyone, welcome to the first Never's End Dev Diary of 2026!ㅤI'm Ryan, the game director, and in this entry, we’re diving into one of the systems that quietly affects almost every battle: water. What started as a visual detail has grown into a fully simulated mechanic that shapes movement, positioning, and emergent tactics across the game.In Never’s End, water isn’t a static decoration. It’s a fully simulated system that plays an active role in combat. Designing believable water inside a turn-based tactical grid has been an interesting technical and design challenge, and it’s something we continue to refine as we learn more about it.ㅤㅤA Tactical Water SimulationWater flows across the battlefield using a simulation that tracks currents and pressure. It behaves like water should (seeking lower ground, wrapping around obstacles, and responding to terrain changes) while still respectin…
- Dev Diary #4: Throwing - 10 November 2025
Hi everyone, and welcome to Dev Diary #4 for Never's End!ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ I'm Ryan, the game director. So far, I’ve talked about many aspects of the game, from its inspirations and core mechanics to the art direction. This time, I’d like to walk you through another system that ties everything together: throwing. In Never’s End, every system is built around freedom, expression, and creative solutions. That philosophy even extends to something as simple as throwing an object. Whether you’re hurling a finely balanced spear or a freshly cooked steak, throwing is a core part of how you interact with the world. If you can pick it up, you can throw it. That includes weapons, tools, food, bottles, logs, skulls, and even your clothes. There are currently around 190 items in the game, and we’re still adding more. Each of them behaves differently when thrown. Some soar gracefully through the air; others tumble cl…
- Dev Diary #3: Art Direction - 11 September 2025
Hi everyone, welcome to our new Dev Diary for Never's End!I'm Ryan, the game director, and this time I'll be talking about the game's art direction and the reasoning behind our design and artistic choices. When shaping the world of Never’s End, it has been important to find the right balance between cute and dangerous. It's a deep tactics game with several dark themes, and I wanted the aesthetic to have an element of maturity while also being more inviting than most tactics games of this complexity. We have placed a strong focus on creating a game with deep systems that's also accessible to a wider audience, and the visual design is an integral part of this goal. One of our earliest guiding references was imagining what “Chibi Bloodborne” might look like. This is most apparent in some of our earliest concepts for weapons and outfits. Practical ArmorA core principle of our outfit design i…

- Dev Diary #2 - Pushing - 3 August 2025
Hello everyone and welcome (or welcome back) to our Dev Diary #2 for Never's End!I'm Ryan, the game director, and one of my main goals with the design of Never's End has been to support player creativity and expressivity in combat. Wherever possible, we try to make all objects operate within a shared set of systemic rules, based on a common set of properties. This extends to our magic system, but it’s also important in more grounded interactions like pushing, which is what I want to talk about today.PositioningA lot of the game’s rules and calculations depend on how objects are positioned, and pushing is your primary tool for rearranging the battlefield. If you are standing on higher ground than your enemy, you are more likely to land a headshot. If you are surrounded by multiple enemies, you are less likely to evade. If you are behind an obstacle, it might obstruct an incoming projecti…
- Dev Diary #1 - Origins and Inspirations - 27 June 2025
Welcome to the first dev diary for Never’s End! I'm Ryan, the game director, and in these dev diary posts, we'll be discussing everything from details about all aspects of the game - things like combat system design, our ever-growing soundtrack, behind-the-scenes technology, and our procedurally generated world. Today, I'll be sharing some of the game's earliest inspirations dating way back to 2018 when development first started!Evolving WorldI’ve wanted to make something with an evolving world for a while. Originally that was from a fascination with how things get repurposed by civilization over long time periods. I recall being in L.A. for E3 2014 where we were demoing Destiny multiplayer, and taking a day to visit the Getty Center (If you’re ever in L.A. you should visit. It’s free!) where they had an exhibit or Ed Rusha photographs. There was a series of photos showing the streets o…
