  Embracer Group have announced that they're closing down Volition, the Illinois, US-based developer best known today for Saints Row and Red Faction. The announcement - which coincided with the predictably uproarious lifting of Starfield's review embargo, though I'm sure the timing is purely accidental - comes as part of broader restructuring at Embracer Group following a multiple-year acquisition spree, which Alice0 reported on in June .   THQ, the troubled publisher of Saints Row, WWE games, Company of Heroes , Metro: Last Light , the new South Park role-playing game, Red Faction and more, may still be sold in its entirety to an investment group called Clearlake as part of a bankruptcy sale, according to a court ruling. • THQ abandons Red Faction franchise - 27 July 2011

  THQ has pulled the plug on its Red Faction franchise following poor sales of RF: Armageddon. Speaking at an investor call today, CEO Brian Farrell confirmed that "we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way." He added that the development team at Volition has been moved onto Guillermo del Toro's inSane survival horror project. The series began back in 2001 as an FPS on PC and PlayStation 2, with a formal sequel following on a year later. Red Faction: Guerrilla switched to a third person perspective in 2009, picking up a sturdy 7/10 from Eurogamer. Red Faction: Armageddon, released last month, matched that score but, as revealed earlier today, failed to do the business at retail .

  Remember when we told you that Mr. Toots, a wee unicorn with a powerful, rainbow-spraying ass , would come to Red Faction: Armageddon ? Well, here's your official confirmation from THQ who also reveals how we'll get our hands on Mr. Toots incredibly destructive rectum. It's going to take a million downloads of the game's demo, according to the video released by THQ today. The demo for Red Faction: Armageddon was released today on Xbox Live and is supposed to come to the PlayStation Network whenever Sony's online service returns from its slumber. Given PS3's owners inability to grab said demo right now, Armageddon will have an uphill battle making it to a million. (There's no PC demo, sadly.) Might want to tell your friends if you want to unicorn fart things to death. Red Faction: Armageddon hits the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on June 7 in North America, June 10 internationally.

  Ten years ago the original Red Faction gave PlayStation 2, PC, and Mac gamers their first taste of the future of humanity on Mars.   You may know Volition as the developers behind the Saints Row and Red Faction games. But its history is actually a lot longer, and more illustrious, than that. • Your First Look At Red Faction: Battlegrounds - 16 August 2010

  The first downloadable Red Faction game was officially named and detailed earlier today, but publisher THQ is making its latest game announcement officially official with new Red Faction: Battlegrounds media. The Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network game is coming in 2011, courtesy of developer THQ Digital Studios UK and Volition. Four players can go head to head in vehicular based Martian combat, pitting tanks versus mechs versus "fast-attack vehicles" in a handful of game modes. The requisite Red Faction demolition is also included at no additional charge. Red Faction: Battlegrounds will be playable at Gamescom 2010 this week, so we'll let you know what we think soon enough.
