- DEVLOG #13 Snack Time! - 31 August 2026
Hungry greetings, my good Begoners!Soon you’ll all have your own tricks and tactics for taking on the creeps, crawlies, haunts, and government goons that’ve infested the peaceful town of Pennybrook. But if there’s one thing I’m sure we’ll ALL agree on, it’s that you Never fight BEASTS on an empty belly! Yes, our feisty little warriors will get to enjoy quite the spread, thanks to Ate’s Lola, who’s there and happy to provide. Everything from Burgers to Bubblegum is on the menu in her overstocked kitchen above the Clubhouse! Before each mission, you and your team will open up your snack packs and choose snacks to power your next adventure. Different snacks give different benefits, so it’s a way to strategize and build for the conditions you’re set to encounter. Each Begoner’s selection includes the snacks they’ve discovered through playing, but you’ll also be able to trade or gift snacks t…
- A Little Developer Pup-date - 31 July 2026
Hiya, folks! A big thank you for your continued interest and patience. The work continues feverishly, and we’re progressing towards some exciting updates in the near future!! As those take shape, I did want to seize this chance to highlight a bit of joy in our lives, especially since she’s someone we’ve decided to share with Ate, her crew, and all the rest of you, too! Her name is Peppermint, and she’s our diminutive animal companion. Our pint-sized, bright-eyed familiar. She joined the team last year, and has now officially squirmed her way into our cast of characters. She follows the Begoners faithfully around and, despite her piddly stature, can lend you a helping paw against the BEASTS!You’ll find Pep lounging around the yard or clubhouse most days. Make sure to give her a nice pat when you do, since she’ll be unreasonably happy about it.According to Ate, she’s half-Chihuahua, half-…
- Character Spotlight: Camila (The Support) - 30 June 2026
\Welcome, reader, to our member list! Today, it’s probably time for me to tell you about the Begoner’s Official Archivist. In other words, me, Camila!!To start with, some fun facts about me are that I’m an honor scholar, I’m in the school majorettes, and while I love reading books and writing for journalism (like the school paper), my favorite subject has always been science! It might have been fate, therefore, that made me learn about the Begoners through science class. It happened on an April morning in seventh grade: the boy who normally sat next to me (it was Deacon, but he never talked to me back then!! >. .
- Character Spotlight: Benny (The Specialist) - 31 May 2026
\Welcome, reader, to our member list! Today, we’ll learn about Benny! As one of Ate’s longtime friends, he was a Begoner from the very beginning! >.
- Character Spotlight: Ate (The Fighter) - 30 April 2026
\Welcome, reader, to our member list! Today, let’s learn about Ate, the founder of the Begoner’s Club!If I had to say one thing that surprises everyone about Ate, it is that “Ate” is not even her real name! It is Madeline! But only teachers call her that! (Her Lola calls her “Mad,” and Benny thought that might be because of her face, but then Deacon said, no, it was probably just a shortening of Madeline. >.
- Character Spotlight: Deacon (The Scout) - 31 March 2026
\Welcome, reader, to the Begoner's Club member list! Today we are sharing some information about Deacon!Deacon is one of the original founders of the Begoner’s Club. While some think he is shy, I would actually use other adjectives for him, such as stoic, calm, and logical! Although he doesn’t say much, he is always there when you need him to be, and when Ate decided to take on the BEASTS in Pennybrook, he was right at her side without a moment’s hesitation! (Although I think he would prefer it if she was a bit less fast to do things!) Deacon’s role on the team is incredibly important, because he is not only our friend and voice of reason, but also our scout! One of the things he has is this old but incredibly powerful UV (ultraviolet) Light, which can be used to detect all sorts of weird things we would’ve never seen using just our own eyes! Without him, we would definitely stumble rig…
- DEVLOG # 12 Playing Peekaboo - 28 February 2026
Helloooooooo Begoners!Today we are sharing a bit more about The Peekaboo Man (or PBM as we affectionately call him). PBM is a tricksy fella, he loves to toy with his prey (see: you). When facing off against him he will pull individual players into a twisted game of… well… peekaboo. We built a fun little set for him to hide in. It looks something like this in-engine: And here is what it actually looks like in game:During this section, your allies have a bigger view of the PBM’s general position, so they can scream out his location to you… if they are so inclined. And if you are all lucky (or unlucky I suppose) you may catch a glimpse of his true face...This and much more is being worked on! Stay tuned for more! And as always… you know you gotta take a DEEEEEEEP BREATH and...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA A AAAAAAAA…
- Hello! We Are Still Here! - 31 January 2026
We know it has been too long since our last update. And the eagle-eyed among you have probably noticed 2025 came and went without a release. We missed the date and that sucks. Especially for those of you who have been eagerly waiting for a bit now. The reality is that the game isn’t ready yet. We’re aiming to get it to you this year, and while we can’t promise a date just yet things are movin. Ate, Benny, Camila, Deacon, Edith, and Fabio are really growing into the characters we dreamed they would be. And whole new zones and BEASTS are taking shape as well. We are a small team, but we are working nonstop to make this thing worth every extra second that you have to wait.Your support means the world. And it is heart wrenching to be so close but not quite there. While we won't be sharing new release dates again until we have a firmly set date, we will aim to provide short monthly updates s…
- DEVLOG #11 Networking Part 1 - Who’s Got The Crate? - 5 September 2025
Hello! I’m one of the engineers on Begone Beast and this is the first in a series of posts about Networking and Multiplayer systems, which is where I spend a lot of my time and energy. One of the goals in multiplayer game development is making sure that the world each player sees is as consistent as possible for things that matter. For this blog post, we wanted to share a simple yet amusing challenge that we needed to solve for our Throwables: if two players pick up an item at the same time, who gets to throw it at that large horde of hands?!What’s a Throwable?A Throwable is a game object like a crate or an oil drum that a player can pick up and fling at a bunch of enemies. We also have Deployables like barricades and turrets that players can use for strategy and crowd control. And both of these are types of Pickupables in terms of game object hierarchy, but throwable is more fun to say…
- DEVLOG #10 The Effect Chain - 1 July 2025
Hi all, Patrick on the engineering team here with a slightly more technical post! When making games, a lot of effort goes into making tools for the developers, both so that gameplay can be implemented as quickly and easily as possible, and so that non-programmers can more easily make changes to the gameplay. One big system we’ve been working on in Begone Beast is the effect chain system, which is our version of something similar to a behavior tree. We use this for our enemy behaviors, player abilities, and a number of other places. Here’s an example of an effect chain for the behavior of some horde monsters:Look at all those fancy boxes!I’ve collapsed most of the steps for simplicity, but you can see the general behavior flow from the comments. Find a target, run away if we’re afraid, attack the target if we can, otherwise move toward them.Though something like this could be done entirely…
- DEVLOG #9 THE LEWTON BUS SYSTEM! - 2 June 2025
Let’s talk about spooky atmosphere! Our encounters are already full of thick fog, horrible creatures, and deadly traps. But we also wanted some more subtle ways to elevate tension. A system of creating apprehension during the quieter moments of the game… So we looked to classic horror cinema- and incorporated a technique known as the Lewton Bus. A Lewton Bus is a scary moment that (often) turns out to be innocuous- like a cat knocking over a plate with a loud crash. The History of the Lewton Bus The Lewton Bus technique is named after 1940s movie producer Val Lewton. The “bus” comes from a famous scene in the 1942 film called Cat People. In the scene, a woman walks alone through a dimly lit street. The tension builds as she is clearly nervous someone is following her or watching her. As the quiet tension reaches its peak, a bus arrives making a sudden loud hiss. The Lewton Bus! There is…
- DEVLOG #8 THE BACKYARD! - 11 April 2025
It’s time for another update! This time we want to share the other half of our cozy little clubhouse cove: The Backyard! This is where our little adventurers can choose their loadouts, craft gadgets, upgrade their flashlights, and blow off some steam against cardboard dummies! The Backyard No better place to take a deep breath of fresh autumn air! The ideal staging area to prep for some BEAST banishing. Cardboard Combat! Test your latest abilities, weapons, and attacks on these box beasts! Even Benny will take some swings! But he does secretly wish Camila didn’t draw such convincing faces on them. He prefers to beat up “less intimidating” boxes. The Tool Shed! Watch out mom and dad! This is where the beast hunters hone their weapons. It may not look like much at first, but it houses a real KICK-ARSE ARSENAL! Here we upgrade our flashlights, unlock powerful batteries, choose special char…
- DEVLOG #7 THE CLUBHOUSE! - 7 March 2025
Hello Again Intrepid Hunters! We are, as ever, hard at work here in our little lab- cooking up all sorts of monsters and mayhem. However, today’s post will be focused on something a bit cozier. Sure the game is about BEASTS with a capital B…. but these lil heroes also need a place to relax and prepare for their adventure. So today we are excited to give you a glimpse into the Begone Beast Clubhouse. Situated just outside of Pennybrook proper, this little slice of heaven gives our adventurers everything they need to stay strong and ready for the battles to come. And really, what better place to set up the clubhouse than Lola’s house! Ate’s gracious grandmama has given in and let us use her basement as the headquarters. Let’s take a look! The Clubhouse Talk about putting the BASE into BASEMENT! We’ve got everything we need in here! The Locker Lineup! First off- every beast hunter needs a…

- DEVLOG #005 BREATHING LIFE W/ ANIMATION! - 7 December 2024
Greetings! Today’s blog post will focus on one of my favorite topics: ANIMATION! I absolutely love animation and the many ways to think about it. It’s an artform with a lot of hidden depth. There is of course the application of physics and motion- which is challenging itself! Capturing (and heightening) the feeling of impact and weight in a character has soooo many methods and styles. Squashing and stretching, smear frames, hitstops, and all sorts of other methods to capture movement are a fascinating rabbit hole I highly recommend diving into if you are interested in it. As an action game, Begone Beast has had a ton of iteration on how to get actions and reactions to feel good. There is also acting- which is easy to overlook. Animation is acting! No matter how good a character’s movements are- they still have to deliver a compelling performance. And that whole acting part is super invo…
- DEVLOG #004 MOM - 12 November 2024
Hello everyone! I’m Clarissa, one of the co-founders and engineers at Tandemi, as well as the architect behind our Map Outline Maker, or MOM. MOM is responsible for generating unique map layouts on each playthrough. She works together with the Dynamic AI Director, or DAD, (more info on DAD in a future post!) to dynamically spawn monsters and obstacles tailored to each experience with your friends - because… they love you of course! MOM didn’t become awesome overnight. We went through what felt like countless iterations of procedural generation architecture over the course of development- and there will surely be countless more iterations in the future! When I first started building MOM, I was eager to learn pathfinding algorithms to build our first maps. (this kicked my butt btw… but shaped me into being a better programmer). I worked within a 2D grid and placed big and small squares th…
- DEVLOG #003: THANK YOU FOR 125k WISHLISTS!! - 3 October 2024
Wow wow wow! You absolute legends!! 125k wishlists and counting! There are no words. We are just over the moon… nay- Over the stars!! Cannot believe it! The BEASTS are quaking in their boots! Haha! We may have to make them… stronger. We can’t wait to be able to share more of the game to you. Our lil dev team is chuggin right along! At the moment, Tandemi is a four person team (with a few helpful contractors). We are playtesting daily - putting our cute and cuddly little heroes through their paces. These courageous little misfits are tirelessly taking on the terrors of the dark.. Although they take their fair share of wallopings as well. We are eager to share more gameplay with you all soon! In the Meantime, we’d like to share some of the process behind the scenes of our latest trailer: TRAILER STORYBOARDS VS FINAL STORYBOARDS CLIP 1 CLIP 1 on Youtube Here is a comparison of the storyboa…
- DEVLOG #002 REACTIONS & REMEMBERING - 3 September 2024
Hey party people! As we embrace the crisp delights of autumn, we're still basking in the warmth of our reception at Gamescom and the wild reactions we got! We're also taking a moment to reflect on our game development journey. PAX West just concluded, and while we weren’t able to attend this year, PAX holds a special place in our hearts as it was pivotal in our start on this game dev adventure. Read more below! GAMESCOM REACTION HIGHLIGHTS! You’ve been incredibly kind to us these past two weeks! We were absolutely floored by the reactions to our latest trailer. Thank you so much to everyone who watched! It was truly amazing to see it air during Gamescom Opening Night Live. We were especially captivated by all the streams that reacted to our trailer. Moments like these remind us why we’re making games in the first place. Since we’ve never experienced anything quite like this, we decided…
