From today, September 14, and until September 21st, Expeditions: Samurai will be part of the Steam Party-Based RPG Fest! Alongside other exciting titles in the genre, we will offer a generous discount for new players willing to take a chance on the Early Access version of our game. This event is timed well, as we are releasing our first major update not long after the event ends! It will feature a plethora of improvements to the interface, game balance, character appearance, animations, and VFX, as well as new character creation options. We were already intending for Update 1 to mostly address the initial feedback from our community, but we've even surprised ourselves with how much of your feedback we've been able to address with this update. Here's a small taste of what's to come:New FeaturesParty size has been increased to 6 in most levels.Companion skills can now be used in dialogue.A…

  • Version 0.5.3 Patch Notes - 2 September 2026

While the team continues to plug away at the major Update 1, which will address a wide variety of feedback we've received thus far, we have selected a few fixes and one improvement to the input system that we've deemed high-priority enough to merit its own patch. We hope this will improve your experience while you wait for more content to be released!Mouse Input is Now RebindableLeft Mouse is now bindable in the Options menu. This means you can rebind Select and Primary Action to whichever configuration makes most intuitive sense to you. For example, if you miss the input layout of previous Expeditions games, you can now bind them both to Left Mouse and bind Toggle Camera Rotation to Right Mouse.Additional Fixes and ImprovementsImplemented logic that translates input to other keyboard layouts such as AZERTY.Corpses now only highlight if they have loot. You can still interact with them t…

  • Dev Diary #3 - Stealth Gameplay - 31 August 2026

While you wait for Update 1, which will address all common feedback from the initial Early Access version of Expeditions: Samurai, we thought we would take this opportunity to talk a little bit about how the core gameplay of Samurai has evolved from Rome, and the thinking behind these changes.Every Expeditions game undergoes a few gameplay changes compared to previous instalments, both to keep the series feeling fresh, but also to support the themes of each game's distinct setting and story. This dev diary will delve into the most significant change we've made to Samurai, being the addition of stealth mechanics, and show how this new aspect of the game plays together with other new features.Stealth and Advanced AI BehaviorHaving noticed an enemy ambush in the forest ahead, players have split their party and snuck them one by one into position to start combat on their terms and execute a…

  • Preview of Upcoming Improvements - 24 August 2026

Hello everyone! If you've been hanging out on the Discord, you've probably picked up a lot about what we've been working on since the Early Access release. We also dropped a few notes about our plans at the end of the last patch notes, but just in case you missed all of that, we'd like to summarise what you can expect soon. There will also be some new information in here for those of you who do keep up with our Discord.Rebindable Mouse InputsOn mouse and keyboard, you will soon be able to rebind Select, Move, and Interact inputs separately, and you are allowed to bind any of them to the same button so you can set up the controls exactly as you please.Party SizeOne of the main pieces of feedback we've received is that people miss the 6-person party from the previous games. After trying it out, we do agree that the 6-character party is a more comfortable size - it means you can cover all yo…

  • Version 0.5.2 Patch Notes - 13 August 2026

Change ListThis section lists the fixes included in this patch. These are the immediate high-priority issues we have prioritised based on your reports so far. Below this section, you can find a list of future issues and feedback we are prioritising next.Gameplay UpdatesBludgeoning damage will no longer kill an enemy outright, and is only able to incapacitate during combat. Unless you hit an already incapacitated enemy, of course. Utilise this to complete optional objectives that involve knocking enemies out instead of killing them.Various fixes to the Ikigai side quest:Fixed so that the two quest targets can't be farmed for loot (sorry not sorry).Dead characters should no longer respawn when you re-enter the level.Note that the dead bodies of the quest characters will respawn at their spawn points if you re-enter the level.Added some more variety to the enemy types in the level to impro…

  • Expeditions: Samurai Now Available in Early Access! - 7 August 2026

It's been a bit of a whirlwind for us since we announced Expeditions: Samurai two months ago. The game had already been in development for nearly 4 years at that point, and it was an incredible relief to finally be able to talk about some of what we'd been through, the new studio we had built, and above all the what the fourth game in the Expeditions series would bring to the table: a rich and colourful setting in Feudal Japan, a dynamic gameplay loop with lots of room for player creativity, and above all full 2-player campaign co-op.Today we have released the game in Early Access, and you can now buy it at a generous discount for the first week if you want to help support our project and have an opportunity to give your input on the game while we still have time to act on it!We're unbelievably excited to share this game with you and collect all your thoughts and suggestions. If you're s…

  • Expeditions: Samurai Early Access Preview—Rising Sun - 6 August 2026

I was largely unaware of Expeditions: Samurai before getting the chance to see it back in June, because for the past year and a bit, the only game with the word “Expedition” in it that has completely dominated the cultural conversation has been Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 . Much to my surprise, the Expeditions series has been going pretty strong and amassed a pretty large following, so I was genuinely excited to see why. It would probably be fitting that my first foray into the franchise would be with Expeditions: Samurai , given my love of Ninjas and all things from the land of the rising sun—especially within historical contexts. I was already pretty impressed with what I had seen, but actually getting to play it was a totally different experience. This is a rock-solid RPG that feels tight and focused, while providing players a lot of room for experimentation. As I touched on in my pr…

  • Dev Vlog #3: Behind Early Access - 4 August 2026

Hello everyone! The Early Access release of Expeditions: Samurai is in a mere three days! We hope you're all as excited to play the game as we are to see how you like it once it's in your hands. While we wait for Friday, some of you have asked why we've chosen to release the game in Early Access. This is the first time an Expeditions game will be in Early Access, but not the first time a version of an Expeditions game has been made available to players while still in development - after all, Viking had an open beta and Conquistador was Kickstarted.Sit down with us in our lovely Copenhagen office and let us talk about how it benefits the game to get hands-on feedback from fans while there's still time for changes and improvements. Please watch Dev Vlog 3: Behind Early Access, on our YouTube channel:What is contained in the Early Access version? The version of our game that will be made avail…

  • Dev Diary #2 - Character Progression - 30 July 2026

Hello, everyone! Over the past few months, there has been a lot of interest in - and speculation about - the character system in Samurai. It's been a lot of fun to read your thoughts and hear what changes or improvements you were hoping to see in Samurai compared to Rome, but we think it's time to give you a little more substantial information about our progression systems. The Expeditions games have gone through many iterations of progression systems from the very simple resource-management skill system of Conquistador, over the free-form skill system of Viking, to the class-based skill tree of Expeditions: Rome where most abilities came from your equipment. Our aim with Expeditions: Samurai has been to build on the character systems of Expeditions: Rome while re-introducing skills and attributes from Expeditions: Viking, with the goal of adding more classic CRPG-systems and more clearly…

  • Dev Diary #1 - Story Writing - 23 July 2026

Hello, everyone! Now that you've all had a chance to get hyped about the Sengoku Japan setting of the next Expeditions game, and we've given you a few morsels of information about the story and characters, it's time to bring you into the writer's room and give you a peek behind the scenes of writing Expeditions: Samurai. The writing of every Expeditions game begins with the selection of a touch-stone character from history - a real person whose deeds will provide a jumping-off point for our protagonist and frame the challenges and opportunities that will face you, the player. The ProtagonistOnce we had settled on Japan as a setting, we knew at once that William Adams would be our reference character, as his story is both compelling and (thanks to the Shogun book and series) well-known. However, William Adams differs from the people we've based previous games on (Hernán Cortés, Ragnarr Loð…
