In the history of horror games - beginning with Haunted House and Monster Maze, going right up to Dying Light The Beast and Silent Hill F - Resident Evil 4 marks an inflection point. I'll personally maintain that RE was an action game right from the beginning, as far back as 1996. But Resident Evil 4 undoubtedly tipped the scale. Survival horror was joined by a new subgenre: action horror. Superficially, they might seem mutually exclusive. Resident Evil 4 Remake has some of the finest over-the-shoulder shooting in all of videogames. The original RE4 set the standard, of course, but Capcom's 2023 horror hit made it louder, nastier, and more gratifying. You take the intense, back-to-the-wall action of Leon Kennedy's latest outing, and combine it with the isometric viewpoint and brutalist, pseudo-Soviet aesthetic of Disco Elysium. It sounds like they won't fit together - how can you have a third-person shooter if we're playing from that classic CRPG-type perspective. But you see, this is the trick. With an art style also reminiscent of Signalis, and dismemberment mechanics that would make Dead Space's Isaac Clarke jealous, Holstin, a new survival horror game available to try on Steam, has a lot of cool surprises. There are two reasons why I was all-in on Holstin fewer than 20 seconds into its PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted trailer. The first is probably obvious: the technical magic that lets it transition from an isometric, exploratory horror game to an over-the-shoulder shooter without a hitch. I'm not sure I've ever seen it done before, and certainly not with this much pizzazz . It's like watching Baldur's Gate become Resident Evil 4; you can't help but be impressed. The second? It's a stormy night. The lights are off. The doors are locked. Somewhere, a woman is singing. Somewhere else, a phone is ringing. The sinks are full of gunk and there are children hiding in the cupboards. Oh, and the darker stretches of floor are covered with writhing tentacles. This is Holstin , a Polish survival horror experience in which you merrily rove an isolated town that, based on 14 minutes of fumbling around in exactly one very unwelcoming house, already seems a match for Silent Hill in terms of existential squalor.
