  • Brian Fargo On InXile’s Darkest, Publisher-Driven Days - 15 August 2013

The future is looking very bright for Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera developer inXile. Very bright indeed . Two wildly successful Kickstarters and one nearly complete, maddeningly exciting game later, Brian Fargo and co have finally found their niche. Or rather, they’ve settled back into the comforting clockwork of an old wheelhouse, an old home. But the road to this point was hardly an easy one. The developer-publisher relationship has always been rather skewed, and inXile’s taken its fair share of licks. Some times have been good (see: The Bard’s Tale), and others, well, others have been Hunted: The Demon’s Forge. The latter, especially, is a sore spot for Fargo, but he’s been burned by various publishing arrangements far more than once. He and I discussed that subject, whether Kickstarter is inXile’s permanent solution to that problem,…

  • Game restarts £5 Play Now/Trade Later - 29 July 2011

UK shop Game has restarted its Play Now/Trade Later deal. It means you can buy selected games and trade them in for a guaranteed amount, effectively meaning you pay a fiver for them. Codemasters' superb racer Dirt 3 is on the list. Fear 3 on Xbox 360 (not PS3) is another. Other games included are: * UFC Trainer (Wii); * Cars 2 (DS) ;* Art Academy (DS) ;* Call of Juarez: The Cartel (Xbox 360 and PS3) ;* Hunted: The Demon's Forge (PS3); * Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Wii); If you trade in any of those games for credit before 12th August they'll effectively cost £5. The credit can be redeemed against any purchase in the future. In February Game raised eyebrows when it guaranteed a £35 trade-in price for shooters Killzone 3 and Bulletstorm. It meant you lost only £5 for 13 days of play. Video:

  • Shack Giveaway: Hunted The Demon's Forge - 14 July 2011

"A vast world of horrific sights and monsters" is a great way to describe both the Internet and the world of Hunted: The Demon's Forge , from developer Inxile Entertainment. Since they share a similar (Read: Demonic) environment, Shacknews has decided to bring these two elements together and give away two copies of the PC version of Hunted: The Demon's Forge. Shack has two retail copies of the Bethesda Softworks-published title, and we want you to help us dungeon crawl and demon slay. Entering the giveaway is simple, you just have to follow a few rules: * Leave a comment below telling us who the end boss in your dungeon would be; * You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the United States (excluding Puerto Rico); * Limit 1 entry per person (Only your first comment will be counted); * The entry period ends at 12:00PM PT Tuesday, 07/19/2011; * At that time, we will randomly select…

  • Hunted: The Demon’s Forge review - 18 June 2011

As the girl with the bow, fellow archers in the treeline are your targets. You pop up from cover, arrow nocked, taking them down one headshot at a time. That clears the path... mostly... for your friend with the sword to dash in. Pity nothing’s never quite so easy. Out of nowhere, a minotaur charges and you’re down, crawling and hammering the button to stay alive until your friend gets a second to turn and sling one of his precious resurrection vials your way – salvation with a side of mana to return the favour with a magically charged Battle Boost. Like all good crimes, killing is best done with a friend – and this kind of co-op hack-and-slash is Hunted’s bread and butter. You can play the campaign on your own, but it’s firmly meant for two: one player as Caddoc (Warrior, Melee, Muscles) and the other as E’lara (Huntress, Ranged, Breasts). Without company, it’s a deeply repetitive grin…

  • UK Top 40: LA Noire locked in first - 6 June 2011

Dark detective drama L.A. Noire has extended its reign on top of the charts, spending a third week at number one. Co-operative fantasy fighter Hunted: The Demon's Forge was last week's major new contender, but the Bethesda-published adventure could only capture 14th place. Hunted's platform sales broke down to 63 per cent Xbox 360, 30 per cent on PS3 and 7 per cent on PC (excluding downloads). Sims 3: Generations - the life simulation's fourth expansion - fared better, knocking up a tenth place entry on PC. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is anchored in second, no doubt buoyed by the release of fourth film On Stranger Tides. Codemasters' rally racer Dirt 3 revved into third. Colourful caricatured shooter Brink held fifth place. The Wii bundle-backed Wii Sports Resort spends its 98th week in the UK Top 40, reclining in sixth. Chart stalwarts COD: Black Ops, FIFA 11, and Portal 2 fill out s…

  • Hunted: The Demon's Forge - 2 June 2011

Campaign co-operative play was once the preserve of the dedicated PC gamer, but these days it's become a standard gameplay feature and it's not hard to see why. My experience playing Gears of War, for example, was infinitely superior once I had someone there to witness me punting a Locust corpse around a room while shouting that we do not negotiate with terrorists, and I know that Left 4 Dead was more memorable whenever someone had to fight their way across a level to save my life than it would have been if I'd just used a health pack. The presence of a friend means that co-op is fun by default, and it would be nice to see more games embracing the concept from the outset rather than tacking it on. Cue Hunted: The Demon's Forge. Developed by a team of RPG veterans at inXile Entertainment - the sort of RPG veterans whose reliance on pencils and paper for Dungeons & Dragons sessions was a…

  • Out This Week - 03/06/11 - 31 May 2011

Swords and shields adventure Hunted: The Demon's Forge hopes to capture your imagination this week. By virtue of it being the only major release, will it capture the contents of your wallet too? You play as couple of money-obsessed mercenaries who would never help anyone without the promise of gold. So of course you must gradually find a moral compass and become world-saving heroes. What else is out this week? PC megahit The Sims 3 launches its latest expansion, Generations. We don't normally cover add-ons here, but it's a retail release and, well, new pickings have rarely been slimmer. It's worth noting that Sony has promised PlayStation Store services will resume this week - meaning free games for PSN users and, fingers crossed, a bumper crop of new software. There are plenty of downloadable releases to catch up on after six weeks offline. Still heard nothing that takes your fancy? We…

  • What an Excellent Music Choice for Hunted: The Demon Forge's Launch Trailer - 26 May 2011

Filter's gloomy rendition of "Happy Together" sets the perfect tone for the May 31 launch of inXile's co-op focused dungeon romp Hunted: The Demon's Forge .

  • On Hunted And The RPG “Detour” Claim - 25 May 2011

This article over on Gamasutra is a little skewed by its title, “How RPGs Were A 30-Year Detour”, because inXile’s president Matt Findley doesn’t actually say that specifically, but it’s interesting and provocative all the same. What he said was this: “Well, you know, we analyzed the long history of video games. I think these games always wanted to be action games at their heart. I think all those old turn-based games, it’s just that’s all the technology would allow.” Controversy! Some thoughts on that below. (more…)

  • Forging New Worlds in Hunted: The Demon's Forge - 6 May 2011

In the latest behind-the-scenes video for inXile's Hunted: The Demon's Forge , the development team explores how they tackled crafting the game world, and how players can create their own bits of it using the game's Crucible map editor.

  • More Sword D’œuvres: The Making Of Hunted - 28 April 2011

Oof, there’s some glossy production on the two “making of” videos of Hunted: The Demon’s Forge you’ll find beneath the jump, including Lucy Lawless doing a piece to camera on what “the great thing about Hunted” is. Disappointingly, she doesn’t go on to say that Lucy Lawless is the great thing about Hunted. I bet she’s reading this and kicking herself. Bethesda really are pumping the handles of the hype machine as hard as they can for this one, aren’t they? Alec and I have both played it now, and it’s hard to take away any impression more dramatic that “S’alright!” For my money, the fighting didn’t feel anywhere near tight or tactile enough, but we’ll find out for sure when it lands at the end of May. (more…)

  • Discover New Ways To Play In Hunted: The Demon's Forge - 21 April 2011

"Hunted is running through dungeons and killing monsters with really cool swords, really cool weapons, and amazing spells," says developer inXile's president Matt Findley. That's enough of a description for me. The rest of you should watch this behind-the-scenes trailer. It may look like just another hack-and-slash dungeon crawler, but Hunted: The Demon Forge has a lot going on under the hood that you might not pick up on simply by seeing the game in action. The cooperative aspects of the game are what truly sets it apart, with innovative ways for two players to work together to take on otherwise deadly foes. Of course the best part of a behind-the-scenes development documentary is seeing the excitement on the faces of the game creators as they talk about their baby. Here's hoping Hunted lives up to their expectations when it hits the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on May 31.

  • Hunted's Crucible Unlocks Unlimited Replayability - 18 April 2011

Finishing story mode is only the beginning of the adventure in inXile Entertainment's Hunted: The Demon's Forge. With the Crucible, players can spend their hard-earned gold pieces on creating and sharing endless custom dungeon romps. The Crucible is a feature in Hunted that allows players to craft their own dungeon adventures for play alone with an AI teammate or with a friend in either online or split-screen multiplayer. Players can generate a completely random dungeon experience, or go deep with the Crucible's options, tweaking everything from player handicaps to gravity. Once completed, custom dungeons can be saved or uploaded online for the world to see. The vast wealth acquired in the main game is used to purchase new creatures and features to add to their adventures, giving players a rewarding reason to explore every corner of the game world, squeezing out every ounce of gold they…

  • It's Double The Carnage, Double The Fun In Hunted Co-Op - 24 March 2011

Featuring both online and split-screen offline cooperative multiplayer, Hunted: The Demon's Forge is definitely a game you'll want to play with a friend. I call dibs on the elf girl. In the latest trailer for Inxile Entertainment's hack and slash fantasy adventure focuses on how Caddoc the mercenary and E'lara the archer can combine their powers and skills together to devastating effect. Combination attacks and tactics are a key element of good cooperative gameplay that many games gloss over these days, satisfied with simply having two players fighting at one time. It looks like that won't be the case with Hunted. Hunted: The Demon's Forge is due out June 1 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Hopefully we'll get a chance to play together. I get to be the pretty elf, and yes, I will use voice chatr to sing about how pretty I am.

  • Swor D’œuvres: Some More Hunted Footage - 2 March 2011

It seems like only yesterday that I was posting a long video of Hunted: The Demon’s Forge. Quite possibly because I was . But that video was old, and this is new! And as we all know, new is best. You hear that, grandad? Besides, while both videos show sexy protagonists E’lara and Caddoc slapping around whole bestiaries of monsters, this one’s demon-strably more polished and marginally less all-over-the-place. But still quite all-over-the-place. You’ll see. (more…)

  • Hunted: The Demon’s Forge Gets Map Creator - 1 March 2011

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge and its enigmatic Crucible mode, which, not unlike a restaurant serving griddled cat, has been spotted on the menu but not discussed. Turns out Crucible is where you’ll be spending all the gold picked up in the main campaign, using it to make your very own maps and share them with your friends. I’d expect a very basic interface, what with Hunted primarily being a release for the console machines, but it could be curious nonetheless. (more…)

  • Hunted's Crucible shares community maps - 28 February 2011

Hunted: The Demon's Forge will let you make and share levels with friends via an unannounced (but leaked nonetheless on some very naughty shop websites) Crucible feature, developer inXile has told Eurogamer. "There's a couple of things that happen that we're not talking about yet, but I'll give you a little... We have something that we're not really announcing yet but since it's on the menu screen we're allowed at least to talk about it. And that's The Crucible," founder Matt Finley revealed. "This is a map creation system, which will allow you to... Basically we want users to be able to create maps and share them with their friends. And you'll be able to take your characters through maps." Characters, that is, you've taken through the main Hunted campaign, which lasts somewhere between 12 and 20 hours depending on the amount of exploration you do. Hunted is a co-op, cover-based fantasy…

  • What about Brink and Hunted babies? - 28 February 2011

Last week Bethesda challenged the sexual active population of the world to conceive now so that a baby can be born on "Skyrim Day" - 11th November 2011 (TES V: Skyrim's release date). The Elder Scrolls maker even challenged nutty parents to call their newborns Dovahkiin - Dragonborn in the game's fancy fantasy speak. But Bethesda has other high profile games coming out before November. So what do the makers of Brink and Hunted: The Demon's Forge think about Skyrim babies and perhaps fans of their games following suit? "It's an interesting idea," Paul Wedgwood, head of Brink maker Splash Damage, mulled to Eurogamer. "Having just had a 10 month-old I think I'd rather not have a baby as a great game came out, but I am looking forward to Skyrim very much. "If they did that would be a little bit crazy," he added. "That said, my son's called Fox and it's not exactly a popular choice unless yo…
