Beat-em-ups didn't die with the arcade, but they did enter a recession after the heyday of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Final Fight. After the rush in arcades, with classics pouring in from Konami and Capcom, they slowed to a trickle as interest in walking right and punching faded. But they didn't die. On Steam, the beat-em-up lives on. There are still gang-laden streets that need to be cleared by the fists of heroes. With Streets of Rage 4 coming, we decided to dig into the surprisingly vibrant selection of indie beat-em-ups on PC that have kept the genre’s stylistic violence going. The best of them manage to channel the pure bliss of the arcade days, or add something novel to a genre famous for its 90s simplicity. The Elf may look young and spry, but did you know they live for multiple centuries? The playable Elf in the Chronicles of Mystara is somewhere in the ballpark of 100 years old. Nevertheless, the Elf is one of the most agile vocations in the game, with lots of swift sword moves and acrobatics at her disposal. She also commands a variety of arcane magic spells such as Magic Missile, Invisibility, Lightning Bolt, and the delightful Polymorph Others, which turns enemies into adorable little woodland creatures. The trade-off is a character with relatively low health, strength, and constitution. But the enemy won't even notice when you're unleashing Skydiving Stabs to their craws and conjuring Earth Golems to do your bidding. (Via Capcom-Unity )

For players that like to have their cake and eat it too, we have the Cleric. This well-rounded class combines brute strength with powerful magic, making him a popular choice for the indecisive and beginners alike. The Cleric’s primary weapon, a mace, can be used to bludgeon enemies into a dizzy state, while clever spells like “Sticks to Snakes” even the odds by summoning slithery allies out of ordinary twigs! On top of that, Clerics have the ability to infinitely cast “Turn Undead,” a spell which instantly destroys all on-screen undead enemies—a drastic game changer. They can even strengthen attacks with the Striking spell and use other magic to heal themselves and their allies. When it comes to high fantasy, some character classes have vague names like “Elf” that’ll have you wondering at first what they actually do. Some elves craft presents, others bake cookies. Others, still, provide cyber enhancements to Zero in Mega Man Zero . Well, Fighters don’t have that problem. Fighters fight, and there ain’t no ambiguity about it. If you’re looking for fast action, this is the class for you. Fighters wield a longsword and a short temper, making them a choice class for those looking to get out some quick aggression. The trade-off is that they are completely unable to use magic spells, and must rely solely on their fighting prowess. Still, their skill with the longsword gives them some of the longest-ranged melee of all of the character classes, and Fighters will enjoy a healthy balance between physical strength and dexterity. Dwarves! These old powerhouses are as reliable as they are compact, with high hit points, constitution, and strength. Wielding a hand ax and shield, a Dwarf will dish out the thrashings with high efficiency and minimal nonsense. And since he’s so sturdy, the Dwarf makes a fine choice for the D&D beginner. It’s the Thief. A quick look at our handy-dandy, in-game Character Visualizer (one of the new features) reveals that the Thief is Capcom Unity's most-played character class in the collection. Maybe that’s because she’s an irresistible blend of speed, utility, and blowing stuff up. Her primary skin (each class has two skins in Shadow over Mystara) , named “Moriah” by default, may be a not-so-subtle reference to a certain bizarre adventure, but the Thief performs a number of unique and incredibly helpful functions for her party. First, a Thief can open any treasure chest without using a key, thanks to her lockpicking skills. Time to close out our D&D character class rollout with the final class--the Magic User. Info and gameplay footage within! The name pretty much says it all, but for the sake of being thorough, we will go ahead and point out that the Magic Users excel at using magic. This point bears emphasis, because they really excel at it. The presence of a Magic User in your party will greatly turn the tides during a boss battle. If you play conservatively with the Magic User (as you should), you can stock up a vast array of spells to unleash all at once, quickly decimating its health. The trade-off is that the Magic User is the least versatile in hand-to-hand combat, and must be played very defensively. Luckily, this class has one of the most effectively defensive moves in the game. By double-tapping the jump button, the Magic User will do an immediate backward teleport.
