The weapon feedback, blood-pumping soundtrack, and unashamed over-the-top violence might seem quaint today, but that's only because the entire videogame industry learned from the lessons id Software was teaching. That was over 30 years ago, though, and since then every other shooter to grace our screens owes the Doomguy an unpayable debt. We've seen plenty of older games getting treated to a dose of Nvidia RTX magic, including Doom and Quake II, but now we've been given a taster of how Wolfenstein 3D ray tracing would look with full RTX path tracing, and the result is both beautiful and bewildering in equal measure. Arguably the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D wowed 90s PC gamers (including me) with its fast-paced and surprisingly smooth 3D action on our big, beige boxes, although it all looks quite primitive by today's standards. However, these screenshots show a secret Wolfenstein 3D level in Doom 2, with the lighting handled by an RTX path on one of today's best graphics cards , making the game almost unrecognizable. - Doom 2 RPG has been unofficially ported to PC - 9 May 2023
During the noughties, developer ID Software adapted some of their iconic shooters into curious mobile spin-offs with Doom RPG, Doom 2 RPG , and Wolfenstein RPG. These mixed Doom with old-school dungeon-crawler design, letting you shoot monsters at a considerably slower pace. Over a decade after their initial releases, developer GEC.inc unofficially ported Doom RPG onto PCs and now the team is back with a port for the sequel. Read more

- John Romero's Doom 2 level raises over €25K for Ukrainian relief - 3 March 2022
March 7, 2022: John Romero's new Doom 2 level for Ukrainian relief has raised over €25,000 so far. John Romero is one of PC gaming's most legendary figures, and he's out here continuing to create new levels for his most famous works. Sigil released in 2019 as a free, unofficial fifth episode for the original Doom, and now Romero has released a new, paid Doom II level supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. The level is called One Humanity, and it's available for €5.00 (about $5.80 USD) on Romero's website . Every penny, as Romero explains on Twitter , goes to the Red Cross and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. You'll need to make use of a modern Source port of Doom II in order to play the .WAD file. Now the Doom Shinobi mod threatens to add Doom to the best sword games on PC , as it turns the shooter into basically Ninja Gaiden 4. Creator edypagaza says they aimed "to bring and experience a new gameplay style for players" and they have definitely done just that. One of the more ambitious modding projects for Doom II has become its own standalone free game . Ashes: Afterglow now includes two full episodes of post-apocalyptic, Mad Max action, and it's available for downloading if you've ever wanted to drive around through the ruins of Atlanta on a motorcycle with machine guns on it. Ashes: Afterglow is one of the most convincing throwbacks to '80s B-tier action movies I've ever seen, and it began life as a total conversion mod for Doom II, although it's grown a lot over the course of the past six years. Lead modder Vostyok says it's inspired by Doom's action, the big open Build Engine levels of Duke Nukem 3D, and the vibes of the Stalker series, and you can see that all on display in the trailer below. Doom 2 has been out for a long time, and the Doom modding community is still endlessly creative with finding ways to add to, change, or completely remake the classic series of gory FPS games . Other modders have other goals in mind, however. There's a new mod out called 'Doom 2 but the guns look bad,' which replaces all the weapon artwork in Doom 2 with a version that looks like it was made in Microsoft Paint, probably because it was. 'Doom 2 but the guns look bad' doesn't touch anything else in Doom 2, it just makes the guns look bad. There's a YouTube channel dedicated to recreating classic games using a very unusual medium - cardboard - and it's more than a little impressive. The channel, named simply Games Made of Cardboard, has captured the essence of a whole bunch of retro titles via this very manual and creative medium, and its creator Bill Thorpe has now unveiled the latest: Doom 2 made of cardboard. Describing Doom 2's latest port as his "most ambitious and creative project to date" and a "personal tribute to one of my most treasured games of all time", the creator explains that the project took them an eye-watering nine months to complete, adding he's "both happy and relieved to have completed it".
