- DEVLOG: Grand Ocean - 8 October 2025
Hi all, Austin here. Work on the game continues! It really does. Lots of work behind the scenes building up the Grand Ocean level. This is a water-based level that focuses on player movement. I've shared some parts of the sewer portion before, but here is a look at the Cakuc, the Hammerhead. The player has to dodge the ongoing downward lasers while managing the barrage of bullet and missile patterns throughout the fight. I wanted to create something that forces the player to really use the dash in a fun and fast way, so you'll be flying all over the place for this one.Long way to go still on development, but in between work and life I AM MAKING PROGRESS!Thanks,Austin
- SHMUP SLAM 7! - 13 May 2025
Hey all! Shmup Slam is the premier US-based shoot 'em up event put together with love and dedication by Mark from Electric Underground. This year is going to be another awesome showcase of top-level players like Jaimers, Meriscan, and many many more. I'll be doing a S-Rank run of the demo at 6PM EST on Sunday May 18th and talking about some of the design thoughts of the game too. Watch live starting Saturday 8AM EST on YouTube Check out the last Shmup Slam too:
- Devlog: The Sewer Tunnel - 27 March 2025
THE SEWER TUNNEL The second level of the game, The Grand Ocean, is a water-based level with multiple areas and transitions where the core gameplay revolves around movement challenges. After defeating the boss in level one, Soraya and the Little One find themselves traveling through sewer tunnels full of sludge and pollution, hoping that "all rivers lead to the sea". It's dark and dank in the tunnel and all the enemies are based off of bugs and amphibians: gnats, horned-toads, and dragonflies... If you don't know how to use the dash effectively yet, you will when you face the horned-toad! The. next area of the game is a canyon that leads to the titular Grand Ocean. More soon. Best, Austin
- Demo Update 1.3.1 - 3 February 2025
Hi all - Austin here! Holidays are over and it's time to get back to work with what should be (fingers crossed ːsteamhappyː) the final main update to the demo. The two main issues I kept seeing about the demo were that the intro tutorial and the intended strategy for the demo boss were too unclear. Streamlined Tutorial You might think tutorials are easy to make, but there are so many kinds of players at different skill and literacy levels that it's really hard to make something that works for everyone. It's REALLY hard to figure what to tell the player, how much, and at what speed. For example, the tutorial currently only has three parts and it covers shooting, comboing, combo+, and rewinding time. But there are a lot more mechanics in the game! For example, Dashing, Dashing + Absorbing time bullets at the same time, Point-Blank damage increase, bonuses when large enemies fall into smal…
- Devlog: Ramping Up Development in 2025 - 29 December 2024
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year! Playing some games... At the end of each year I take some time to play a bunch of games. With a full-time job and a family, I spend more time developing games than making them. So I usually grab a couple games during the holiday sales or set aside time to play ones I've been looking forward too. Here's some of the games I've been playing this past month: Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (Finishing after bouncing off) Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Hogwarts Legacy And one more game I've been looking forward to for years and finally made time to play it: Layer Section. This might surprise you but I don't play very many shoot 'em ups! I find most shoot 'em ups to be very derivative, but this is one of those super unique ones and it's super approachable. The push and pull of focusing on surviving in the foreground while locking on…
- Devlog: Beyond Next Fest - 29 October 2024
Hi all - Austin here! I've been decompressing post-Next Fest. It really is a ton of work trying to market a game yourself holy cow. Lots of videos/GIFs, posting, networking, making press lists. But I think it was worth it! I played some demos in Next Fest - figured I should since I was in it 😂 . I really liked Beastieball! Right now the game sits just under 1000 Steam wishlists (!) and will likely get there in the next few weeks as wishlists stabilize post-fest. Next up is continuing design work for the Zahar Desert. This level focuses on technique and close-quarters combat. The level starts with a miniboss right out of the gates: Al-Qaum. This video-projecter-looking mech will be a fun intro to the level. Al-Qaum will sometimes use the trees around the area to supplement their attacks on Soraya! I'm excited to get to work on the rest of the game! -Austin
- STEAM NEXT FEST 2024! - 14 October 2024
Hi all, Austin here. So excited to have Beaming Stingray in the Steam Next Fest! I've worked really hard to fine tune everything for the event. What you'll find in the demo: A 3-minute introductory tutorial A bit of story + intro level The main game's first level I can't wait to see what everyone thinks! If you experience any bugs or issues, please make a post here on Steam or on the discord: https://discord.gg/Zngcc8CDuB ENJOY! -Austin
- STEAM NEXT FEST DEMO IS LIVE! - 8 October 2024
Hey all, Austin here. The Steam Next Fest demo is now live on the main page. In this demo you'll have a quick tutorial, an intro level, and the full first level of the game (as it stands now - subject to change!). Reminders: Pause at (almost) anytime with Esc or the Start button on a controller (or your controller's equivalent). Toggle fullscreen with Alt-Enter Cutscenes should become skippable after you've seen them one time (I worked so hard on them you GET to watch them lol) I'm so excited to see how people react to a shoot 'em up that tries to do something different. Send me your high scores! Enjoy!
- OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! It's really real! - 1 October 2024
WELCOME! I am Austin Dixon and I am the solo dev behind Beaming Stingray. Today the game was officially announced with the Announcement Trailer on Twitter! Beaming Stingray is the result of 3 years of very VERY long nights and weekends. It all started in November 2021 when, in the span of 40 days, both of my mother's parents passed away. With COVID, other illnesses, and age, these two grandparents were the 6th and 7th recent deaths in my life. With so much death so close in time, I really started to think about my time on this planet! How long do I have left. Working on this game has been a way for me to process that - all the fear, the anger, the helplessness, and the hope. Maybe a little deep for a shoot 'em up! But one I hope you'll enjoy when the game releases. - Austin
