  • The Announcement - 16 April 2024

The woman’s footsteps fell lightly on the plush carpeted floor. With arms crossed, and eyes glued forward, she paced the length of the hall. An ebb and flow of excited murmurs snaked past the heavy curtains separating her from the main stage. “Anything?” She turned to her partner. Seated in a cozy corner of the hallway, a tall woman with light hair tapped the arm of her chair. She looked composed, save the heaviness in her eyes. Her neatly-pressed dress shirt and high-waisted pants afforded her a distinguished air. The insignia of a golden beetle carved into an intricate brooch sat snuggly in the clasp of her layered bow tie and gleamed under the cold lights of the hallway. The light-haired woman stared at her reflection before unlocking her phone. “They said noon, Vidya,” she replied, “give them time.” Her eyes lingered on the long list of unanswered emails she had been avoiding. With…

  • The Color of Our Eyes - 7 April 2024

I remember asking Archie about the sky. It was a crisp day in September. The colors of Fall had begun embracing the leaves as they bid farewell to their lush summer green. We had wandered down a cobbled path that broke away from the park near our home. Dappled with sunlight, the recent rains had left puddles along the way. I could almost hear Aunty Ora yelling at us about our muddy boots. As we trekked on our little adventure – Archie leading the way with a stick in hand – I came across a particularly large puddle. Thought: Can a puddle be responsible for a spark of curiosity? Conjecture: An apple spurred Newton’s quandary about gravity. So, a puddle doesn’t seem too far-fetched. The conversation I had with Archie around this puddle would show me a side of my older brother I hadn’t seen before – a part of him that was vulnerable…protected, perhaps. I crouched next to it and studied my r…

  • Time and All Its Friends - 26 March 2024

“This is not the end. Not for you. And not for me,” he’d remind me when the world had grown a little darker. “History will remember our truths.” I remember his face – those bright eyes that saw an illusive future. I remember his laugh, his dreams, and the plastic plants he’d keep by his side. “One day, I’ll have a garden,” he’d laugh. “And in that garden, there will be life.” I remember my friend. Time has a funny way of catching up with you. It is a slow-moving behemoth that you can never outrun. Inevitably, your legs give way and the timeless monster wins. But there are some monsters that are also created… Born of a desperation to be free. Born when an empire, that is gluttonous for more, takes too much. We were born, my beloved and I, into the palms of the hungry. And in that place where life cannot thrive… should not thrive… we found our hearts. Our chosen family. The people we coul…

  • The Hummingbird Part 1 - 17 November 2023

A twin-stick shooter set within the human body – that’s the premise of DC3: Viral Menace. The challenge - reimagining combat in an area that is not meant for bullets, while ensuring that the solution upholds the functionality, aesthetics and thematics of the game. Needless to say, we couldn’t have our main character firing a Glock at viruses and potentially damaging the very tissue she’s trying to save. But we couldn't have a twin-stick shooter without guns…Right? Perhaps we can! Dr. Capsule is trying to fight off an infection and heal Patient Zero in the process. We needed to combine powerful offense and (fantastical) medical innovation into a device that functions as a weapon and fits the world of DC3. And that’s how The Hummingbird was born. The shape of a hummingbird’s beak, their swift movements and miniature size, and their feisty nature (they’re vicious despite being cute) led us…

  • DC3: Viral Menace - Memories - 17 November 2023

I close my eyes. I am six years old. Sailing atop my bed – the deep, rich, empty universe, my blanket. Waves crash from starboard and my bedroom door opens. The steady and warm rays of the sun trickle in. My sun. Growing up, that’s who they were to me. My mothers. One, the center of my universe, and the warmth of my life. The other, a distant star. Decidedly out of reach. But always a guiding light… I asked Mom why Mamma was the way she was. “Your Mamma… is a paradox. The more you try to understand her, the more questions she leaves you with. But know that she loves you.” She paused. Thinking, for a moment, before smiling. “You’ll understand when you’re older.” As you grow older, you get to experience certain shifts in the way you think about the world and your place in it. A shift in the way you connect with the people you call your home. Your take on things becomes jaded. Pessimistic.…

  • Aisle Kyoor : Bridging Inspiration & Invention - 26 April 2023

A.R.A.I #43 Grey clouds and foggy skies. That was the canvas above our heads. My brother and I would look through the little hole in our ceiling, and watch this canvas change. “We’ll make it Aisle. A bright world. A better world. We’ll build it together,” he would say, pointing past the hole in our ceiling. I’d been staring at the short hand of the clock for hours now. I’d memorized the rhythm, the grooves, the chipped off parts that nobody notices. The bare beige walls supporting the clock seemed to meld with the cheap black plastic that’d been cleaned so many times, the polish was stripping away. A thought crossed my mind, as the second hour passed… Thought: time is the only constant unaffected by its own passage. Conjecture: If there are any gods up there, the passage of time must be their ongoing punchline. Cruel. Indifferent. And completely out of our control. At hour three, they s…
