- Unity Application Vulnerability Patch 10/06/2025 - 6 October 2025
Hello! Unity recently let us know there was a vulnerability in applications built using their software.Per Unity themselves: Applications that were built using affected versions of the Unity Editor are susceptible to an unsafe file loading and local file inclusion attack depending on the operating system, which could enable local code execution or information disclosure at the privilege level of the vulnerable application. There is no evidence of any exploitation of the vulnerability nor has there been any impact on users or customers. They provided a patching tool that both devs and players can use for these applications to mitigate the vulnerability (specifically patching the .DLL file). This update includes the patched DLL file for Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning. We will continue to monitor the situation and update the game files again if needed. Thank you for trust…
- Small Video Codec Update - 4 April 2025
Hello! Just a quick video codec update so videos used in the game work better on the Steam Deck (we noticed they would sometimes convert themselves without issues, but other times, they would stay broken, and we finally figured out why!) We are also working on a small stand-alone vocabulary game that we may announce here soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that! Ok dokey, that's it for now. Until next time!
- Some Holiday Minigame Fixes and An Update on State of Cloud Saving 12/23/2024 - 23 December 2024
Hello all! There have been a couple little updates we've been meaning to get around to and some things that we've looked into that we wanted to talk about before for the end of the holiday season as a lot of people have a little more time to invest in playing games during this time and/or may be starting our game to help with their new years resolutions. Updates The gameplay changes mainly involve updating some of the arcade minigames to be a little less difficult, especially at the start of the game. We also finally removed the "Feedback" button from the main menu because we're well out of Early Access and I try to keep my eye out for issues in the Steam forums anyways. About Cloud Saving As an update into one of the larger issues brought up in feedback/reviews, we've done a deep dive into what it would take to get cloud saving working for this game and it would be... a lot. Not only w…
- Quick Kanji Island bug fix 11/11/24 - 12 November 2024
Quick bug fix for an issue in Kanji Island that loads players outside the playable area after saving in the caves. The issue was found by player Panke (thank you Panke!), hopefully this fixes the issue, and if not, we'll figure something else out for ya! The Kanji Island caves will be treated like other instances (no saving while inside them) which should prevent the issue from reoccurring, but as always, if you find a bug or technical issue, please reach out and we'll try our best to fix it! That's all for today!
- Quick Fix for Minigame 6/27/24 - 27 June 2024
Hello! After doing the scaling fix last week, I accidentally messed up the text for the "Discolor" minigame in the School District! Fortunately, an anonymous user submitted the issue using the issue form on the main menu (Thank you kind person! The Screenshot helped a lot in narrowing down the issue!). Hopefully the new players coming in due to the summer sale will be able to play and enjoy the game without technical issues, but if anybody comes across anything, please feel free to fill out the issue form or let us know in the Steam Discussion Boards. Alrighty, that's all for now. Hope you have fun and learn lots everybody! Cheers!
- Quick Update 6/25/2024 - 25 June 2024
Hello! Just wanted to add a quick update based on some feedback we recently received. We've updated the dialogue of an NPC that starts the Salaryman quest in the Business District so that players can still get the necessary information even if they accidentally speed through his initial conversation. We also made small adjustments to the Emergency District Instance to make it just a little easier/less frustrating to navigate (but it's still a bit difficult, so don't give up!) We are always open to feedback that may make the game a better experience and are doing as best as we can to keep our eyes on the discussion board here on Steam as well as the technical feedback form accessible from the main menu (and other places ala social media and what-not). But that's it for now. Thank you and we hope you continue to enjoy our game!
- Quick Scaling Issue Fix 6/6/2024 - 7 June 2024
Hello! Quick fix regarding some scaling issues on a lot of the minigames/arcade games! Unfortunately, we don't have an ultrawide monitor to play our games on, so a lot of scaling issues go by unnoticed during our playtesting. Thankfully, Player "misterbalrog" filled out an issue report letting us know about the problem. For this, we'll let him pass! We went through today and changed the way the all the minigames and arcade game's menus and UI are scaled on displays, which means they should display correctly on non-standard monitor sizes/aspect ratios from 4:3 to 21:9. Hopefully, it should be ok for even wider monitors as well. If there are any further issues regarding the way buttons or menus are displayed, or for any issue really, feel free to either fill out an issue form accessible from the main menu or let us know on the Steam discussion boards. Thanks again to misterbalrog for brin…
- Small bug fix 5/31/2024 - 31 May 2024
Hello! Just a quick fix for a softlock bug in the core corridor that would prevent the movement of blocks (Found by a YouTuber Mudan, which was super cool and a little embarrassing for us to watch!) As always, please let us know if you come across any bugs or issues by either filling out the issue form accessible from the main menu or by letting us know in the Steam discussion board. Alright, that's it for now! じゃあね!
- Another small update (5/9/2024) before the weekend - 9 May 2024
Hello again! More fixes and more updates! Not that many, but some are... kind of important. Bugs: Small typo fixes throughout the Emergency and Food Districts Accidentally left on an area we used for testing battles in the Neighborhood District (BIG OOPS), so turned that off. Raised volume of hit SFX Set Yen back to 0 (we were testing some features, so anyone who started playing that past 2 days got a free ¥1000, which considering we also left the battle area on, is a fair trade for our oversight). Features: Added settings gear icon/option in the Game Buddy main menu so players can adjust volume and enter Kanji mode without having to quit out of the game Thank you all for being patient while we get the quality of our game to a better place! If you run into any issues, typos, etc, feel free to let us know using either the feedback form in the menu or in the Discussion Boards here on Stea…
- Another little update 5/7/2024 - 8 May 2024
I know, this is starting to become a pattern of behavior. What can I say, if someone tells us there are bugs going on, we can't resist trying to fix them ASAP. All of these were brought to our attention by DrFreyer in our discussion boards, so a big thanks to him for being super helpful! Here's the list o' fixes today Changed word for island from こじま(小島) to しま(島) Fixed Mr.Kazu dialogue from playing incorrect dialogue in the school Fixed colider softlock behind Atsuki's house Added check to battles in code to prevent battles from starting while in the menu Added additional check in code to prevent multiple battles from starting at the same time Fixed another hidden "美味しい" Kanji that was on a Pop-Up charm instead of the correct kanji. I want to say it was the last one, but now I'm scared to do so... And that's it! You know what to do if you come across issues at this point and hope you al…
- Bug and Typo Fixes 5/6/2024 - 7 May 2024
Well, looks like with more players coming in for the release, players are finding more bugs and small issues/mistakes, which unfortunately do happen, but fortunately, they are reporting it, which means we can fix em'! This update should take care of the all the reported issues from our feedback form and on the Steam Discussion boards (as well as a couple I caught myself over the weekend!) Here is the lists of changes thus far: Fixed middle exit teleporter in the Core Charm Corridor minigame not working Fixed sprite clipping on walking NPCs in Business District after completing the area Fixed sprite clipping issues of tables in front of School building Adjusted explaination of verb conjugations slightly for the Grammer Gal NPC Fixed "cleansing" typo in the "how to perform Misogi" text at the chōzubachi (water basin) Fixed wrong dialogue from appearing when interacting with the "info budd…
- Just a lil update for audio and typos 5/4/24 - 4 May 2024
You know how you don't sleep well before finally releasing your game out of Early Access and then forget about something you had planned to do, but apparently forgot to write it down, and then didn't realize it until you were playing the latest build of your game that it was a thing you forgot? Well basically, I did that with some typos in the Food District instance, as well as updating the audio in the instance to work similarly to how it does throughout the rest of the game. I believe I also fixed some missing audio bits in a couple of minigames that occurred after the the change from TTS voice to actual recorded voice. There are still some TTS voices used in some of the minigames, but it fits the aesthetic really well on those specific ones in my opinion, so I decided to keep them. Ok, hopefully that's all the last minute updates and fixes for this weekend. Of course, let me know eit…
- Leaving Early Access and going into "Full Release"! - 4 May 2024
Hello! It's true, we are leaving Early Access! We received a lot of great feedback from players during our time in Early Access, and did what we could to address issues, add functionality, add content, and are confident and proud of what we were able to accomplish as a small 2 person team. This is the last big update taking us from our time in Early Access into full release, where we are only going to be focusing on fixing any technical issues that come up. Because of this, we will leave the feedback form button in the main menu for a little longer in case any buggies are found. Finally, here is a list of the updates that represent v1.0 of Kagami: An Odyssey in Japanese Language Learning! Features: Replaced the TTS voice for Kana, Vocab, and Phrases with Audio recorded by Japanese voice-over artist Ko Takehiro. Added a new minigame that goes over the first 55 core vocab accessible early…
- Quick Bug Fixes 4/25/24 - 26 April 2024
Hello again! Just some quick bug fixes based of a playthrough we saw on Twitch (our first one!) Fixed incorrect word in one of the "common phrases" tests in the Katakana District Fixed typo in the Senses doctor dialogue Fixed Bug with Hiragana & Katakana reference guide getting stuck on screen if using the "Back" button instead of the back arrow. Tree collider causing players to get stuck in Neighborhood district fixed Closet collider in Character's house extended to prevent getting stuck Made the distinction between yes and no buttons in the saving section of the menu more clear Thank you Loot_Seeker on Twitch for the playtime and with your sacrifice, other's hopefully won't get stuck or have the same issues you did! That's all for today, thank you all and have a great weekend!
- Mini update 4/22/2024 - 23 April 2024
Hello! Just a small update with some things we've been trying to finish before we wrap things up in regards to the main development. Features: Added minigame for the Bank vocabulary in the Business District Added some Sound FX to some of the Enemy characters during battle as well as to some of the cinematics Added Sound FX to buttons that were missing them (still have a few more to do in a later update) Changed BG music to function better in some scenes Added "Zoom-in" effect to battles Added Sound FX to Mr.Number's boombox Game Ending now takes you back to the game instead of the Main Menu (so you can spend that Yen!). Added a secret achievements Nerfed Miasma area to make it easier to traverse Bugs: Fixed soft-lock in the Fire Department Fixed some typos in the dialogue Fortunately, still not too many, if any, bugs reported this past week. Here's to hoping things continue to go smooth…
- Quick bug fix 4/15/2024 - 16 April 2024
QUICK UPDATE: Steam user StarFifi found a bug in "the Dojo" this weekend. Fortunately, it was fairly easy to fix, hence this update. Thank you again StarFifi for letting us know and for working with us to figure out the exact issue! We also happened to be working on some small NPC updates, so there's a couple more NPCs in the game now. More updates to come soon! Alright, that's all from us today! If anyone has any other technical issues, please feel free to either fill out a bug report using the feedback form accessible via the main menu of the game or message us on the Steam forum!
- The BIG April Update - 12 April 2024
Hello Everyone! We are coming closer and closer to getting our little game to it's final form, and this update is a big step towards that goal. Features and Gameplay Updates: Added the mnemonic art from our Hiragana Reference Guide to go along with the dialogue in the Hiragana tutorial level. This was done to improve the mnemonic visualization for complete beginners to the Japanese Language, as well as to aid the understanding of what the walls of text in our dialogue boxes are referring to. Added Game Buddy interactables to the introductory area after the tutorial to better explain what can be accessed in the menu, as well as how the game generally works. Fixed a wayward Game Buddy interactable that snuck by our radar as well. Debuffed the Emergency District Instance ever so slightly so players aren't getting TOO stuck in the bowels of... well, the Emergency District. Added 2 minigames…
- Update notes for 3/15/2024 aka the Steam Spring Sale update - 16 March 2024
Hello everybody! The steam sale kind of snuck up on us and we kinda sorta forgot about it until the last minute. We've been focused on the bigger update we have coming down the pipes, but we wanted to include a couple smaller updates since there was probably going to be a small influx of new players due to the Steam sale. So here is a small list of what's changed! Bug Fixes: Saving issue after exiting the first park before beating it fixed Animation fixed for Game Buddy going back down off the screen Fixed Aspect Ratio issues with the Dojo, so those not using 16:9 displays can see the screen presented correctly Features: Added emotions minigame to School District. A small addition, but one of the minigames we were working on recently to bring more repetition to the late game vocab. More to come to this district and the emergency district. Misc: Add sound FX to Business Boss Ending and u…
- Update notes for 3/5/2024 (bug fix and other little things) - 5 March 2024
Thanks to feedback from a lovely person in our discussion board (Thank you Blazzical!), we were able to locate and exterminate a bug in one of the minigames in the food district, specifically the target shooting minigame. As for feature updates, Pop-Up Charms can now be exited from with a button press instead of having to walk away from the area. We also updated the controls tab in the main menu with some art as supposedly showing the controller layout helps with getting Steam Deck verification (still waiting on more information on that by the way, will keep you posted). I will admit, it also does just look better now. We are still currently hard at work on creating a bit more content that we feel is necessary for our latest Kanji update, as well as making more minigames to help with repetition of some areas of the vocabulary that we think could be improved. We hope to have the majority…
- Quick Update for Dialogue Looping Issue - 21 February 2024
We believe we fixed all the dialogue looping NPCs in the last update we made a few days ago BUT we wanted to be sure it wouldn't happen again in case we missed one. The bug itself was also a really annoying thing to happen to someone if they did not save recently as the restart required would cause loss of progress, which we do recognize as being incredibly frustrating and do sincerely apologize if you were affected. In this update, we added an extra check in the code that should prevent any looping from being possible at all, which was inspired by one of the comments we received in these forums. This update also has a bonus effect of not bringing up dialogues if the NPC has a charm window open. If you experience any issues with looping dialogue or any issues in general, please fill out a feedback form or let us know in these forums. Thank you and happy gaming! :D
