Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is, for the most part, a pretty unexceptional game that does most things pretty competently, though it does manage to slip into that coveted 7/10, imperfect but has something special about it to keep you thinking about it. I'm talking about its Nemesis system, a mechanic that means certain enemies you face off against remember you and your actions as they get stronger, maybe even calling out certain occasions where they killed you. It's a lovely bit of design that, as it turns out, kind of just exists to stop the second hand game market. Read more

Warner Bros. Games has shut down multiple studios including Monolith Productions, the developers behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor . The publisher has also canceled Monolith's next project: a Wonder Woman game announced back in 2021. The culling affects hundreds of employees across three separate studios. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's best feature was easily the nemesis system, and an upcoming mod seeks to add it to Skyrim . If you're unfamiliar with Nemesis system, it works like this: enemies will remember the players actions, such as whether you had previously killed them or been killed by them, allowing them to move up and down the hierarchy. Get beat by a grunt often enough and it could work their way up the ladder, and they will bully you for constantly dying too. And now modder Syclonix seeks to add a similar system to Skyrim (thanks PCGamesN ). Syclonix calls the in-development mod Shadow of Skyrim: Nemesis and Alternative Death System, or SOS-NADS for short, as they described on Reddit . The post paints a pretty picture of how they imagine the mod to work narratively, telling a tale of a player bested by a bog vampire called "Breaks-Many-Shields." Read more
- Ken Levine’s Ghost Story development team trapped in development hell – report - 3 January 2022
A new report from Bloomberg (via Kotaku ) details the status of Ken Levine's small studio, Ghost Story Games, as being in a perpetual state of development hell and nowhere close to releasing a game. The studio, founded in 2014 at the same time Bioshock developer Irrational Games shuttered, was meant to be a small studio able to deliver on big ideas with publisher 2K’s financial backing. But that has yet to occur, and reports from former devs at the studio blame Levine’s managerial style for causing burnout and grief for everyone working there. One of those devs, co-founder Mike Snight, left the company with half the company’s other founders due to Levine’s “creative process”. Part of the problem was Levine’s desire to create a AAA-sized game with an indie-sized team. Following its acquisition of British developer Codemasters , it looks like EA is once again expanding its portfolio of developers - as the company is launching a new studio led by former Monolith Productions VP Kevin Stephens. The studio doesn't yet have a name, but we do know it will be based in the Seattle area and will work on an open-world action-adventure game (via GamesIndustry.biz ). During his time at Monolith Stephens oversaw projects such as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War, so he's had plenty of experience working with this genre. Stephens will be reunited with EA senior VP and group general manager Samantha Ryan, who was formerly president of Monolith and worked with Stephens. As expected, Warner Bros' application for a patent on Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system has been granted. IGN reports the US Patent and Trademark Office released an issue notice , which is currently offline, on 3rd February 2021 confirming the patent goes into effect on 23rd February 2021, with an option to maintain until 2035. As we reported last week , Warner Bros. has been trying to gain approval for this patent since March 2016, although reference to it is made as early as March 2015. After several failed attempts, WB Games has managed to successfully patent its nemesis system from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War . The most recent application goes into effect later this month, solidifying the mechanic as WB Games' sole property. An issue notice from the US Patent and Trademark Office (ta, IGN ) states that from February 23, 2021, Warner Bros. will effectively own the nemesis system through to 2035. The filing itself uses very specific language - "nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games" is just the start - to outline exactly what WB Games has domain over. Warner Bros is trying to patent Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor's critically-acclaimed Nemesis system, it has emerged. The revelation came in the latest video by the superb YouTube series Game Maker's Toolkit, which analyses how the Nemesis system works. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system, developed by a number of staff at Kirkland, Washington-based studio Monolith Productions, tracks the player's in-game actions to create enemies who are seemingly capable of remembering your encounters, rising through the ranks and enacting revenge. Yesterday marked the end of an era for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor . The action-adventure game's online servers shut down January 12, and for many games, that's the end of the line - once the servers are off, there's no more game. That's not the case with Shadow of Mordor, however: thanks to a final update, you'll be able to continue playing, even earning achievements tied to the game's multiplayer features. In a brief update on the official site , WB Games explains that "certain features" of Shadow of Mordor are no longer available as of January 12 - those will be features like the Nemesis Forge , which allowed you to port your Shadow of Mordor nemesis over to the sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War . You won't be able to pick up Vendetta missions any more, and the leaderboards are "no longer connected to other users" (which kind of removes the point of having leaderboards). However…
