In the realities of Legendary Hoplite this means that you use your Combat Points to make them perform an action during combat. What actions can they do? Multiple: clean up obstacles, buff allies, debuff enemies, set traps, etc. Different levels of chapters usually have corresponding mercenaries related to the plot and environment. For example, in Chapter 1 we have a grave digger. What will a gravedigger do? He will dig up graves on the cemetery map and this will prevent ghosts from spawning.
