As part of our ongoing efforts to celebrate and enhance the Square Enix back catalogue, we’re reviewing a number of classic titles to see where we can introduce modern quality of life improvements. One key focus has been retrofitting Steam Cloud support, allowing players to seamlessly carry their progress across multiple devices – including PC and Steam Deck. John Romero and Ion Storm's FPS Daikatana was released 20 years ago and it's regarded as one of the biggest failures in video game history. Nowadays, we remember its infamous advertisement warning us that "John Romero's about to make you his bitch," its delays and its poor reviews . Maybe we also remember the controversies surrounding Ion Storm itself . We remember its myth, but we don't remember Daikatana. While Ion Storm expected to sell more than 2 million copies, Daikatana is a game few people actually played. After offering their exhaustive JRPG lineup at a pittance last week, Square Enix have this week gutted the price of their Eidos Anthology bundle on Steam as part of their “Stay Home & Play” campaign – offering 54 PC classics, contemporary bangers and bizarre curiosities for just under 30 quid, in aid of charities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Past Perfect is a retrospective column in which we look back into gaming history to see whether old favourites are still worth playing today. When I turn my mind to choosing the next game for Past Perfect, I tend to pick between one of two agenda. The first is to replay a game I remember really enjoying to see if I was right to. The other is to replay a game that has a terrible reputation to see if it’s deserved. I think it’s obvious Daikatana appears in the second category. But surely, surely , no game can deserve the ire this one received? Surely it must have been a response to an extremely ill-advised marketing campaign, promising the Earth and only delivering an FPS?
