If you want to enjoy the majority of Capcom's latest games on Steam, Denuvo DRM is a piece of baggage you will have to live with. Monster Hunter Wilds, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil Requiem - all of them use it, and upcoming sci-fi game Pragmata will as well. Strangely, despite its widespread use of Denuvo, Capcom decided last month that for its excellent Resident Evil 4 Remake it would switch DRM software to something called Enigma Protector. As someone who loves the entirety of Capcom's beloved survival horror series (I even played the VR version of the fourth game), I'd say the Resident Evil 4 remake isn't just a revitalization of a horror classic, but an improvement on one of the most groundbreaking games ever made. In the seven or eight hours it takes to complete the original Resident Evil 4 , you will find more imagination, variety, and creative ambition than in any days-long open-world game. The mechanics are simple. The gunplay is clean. But it moves, with great energy and pace, from one visionary set piece to another. Resident Evil 9 is presumably in the pipeline. A remake of Code Veronica also seems possible. But if you're craving more RE and you've already dusted the superlative original Resident Evil 4 dozens of times, the remake is also an absolute blast. The original Resident Evil 4 is one of the best videogames ever made. Excelling at both tense action set pieces and a consistently entertaining horror comedy tone, the 2005 game is a standout in creator Capcom's body of work - which means a lot from the studio and publisher responsible for Dragon's Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Rise, Resident Evil 2, and so much more. Last year's Resident Evil 4 Remake may not reach quite the same lofty heights as the original, but it's also a good game on its own merits, especially with regards to its redesigned gunplay. There are a few characters that are just built different. For me, it's World of Warcraft's Sylvanas Windrunner, or Dragon Age's Morrigan - perhaps even add Uncharted's Nathan Drake to the list. But my roster is relatively obscure, based around the games I played (and was allowed to play) as a child. While I loved all things gory, my mom wasn't as keen, meaning things like Silent Hill and Resident Evil weren't exactly accessible to me. If they had been, though, I know that Capcom's horror series would have quickly become a favorite, and Leon Kennedy would have defined my childhood as much as the Witch of the Wilds or the Banshee Queen. Resident Evil 4 Remake is a terrific example of how to reinvent a classic game without sacrificing what initially made it great. The guns are louder, the combat is tougher, and the visuals are superb, but the fundamentals of the first RE4 remain. Now, Capcom's superlative action horror has been remade again, only this time with a slightly different set of ambitions. Imagining an alternate dimension where Resident Evil 4 was released around 1998, this is the landmark, Leon Kennedy over-the-shoulder shooter but with fixed cameras, 2D backgrounds, and wonderful polygonal graphics, and you can check out the whole thing right now. Baldur's Gate 3 is undoubtedly this year's best game in my opinion, and possibly even this decade's greatest, too. With The Game Awards 2023 nearing, the event just announced its nominees for this year's GOTY award. Unsurprisingly, Larian Studios' behemoth RPG is among those nominated, as are other banger games like Alan Wake 2. While details are currently fairly light, we do know that it has been codenamed REX Engine, standing for RE neXt Engine, apparently.
