- New roguelike Cryptical Path is like Dead Cells, but you build the dungeon - 29 January 2025
The best action roguelikes are defined by choice. Deciding which boons to go for in Hades, which biomes to explore in Dead Cells, or what item to hold onto in Spelunky. These are tough decisions, and they quickly come to define your run and, in turn, future. Perhaps one route will lead to victory? Or, more likely, it'll lead to another lifeless corpse littering the ground. New roguelike Cryptical Path is taking a different approach, though, and it's one of the coolest ideas I've seen in the genre for a while. Best of all, the game is out now with a nice discount too. - How did we approach replayability ? - 13 May 2024
Introduction Hey everyone, I’m Jérémy, Game Director for Cryptical Path. I'm excited to walk you through our approach to replayability in the game, which happens to be the focus point of this week's fest. Of course, Cryptical Path is an action rogue-lite, and this means a lot in terms of replay value. That's why I'm going to dive into some aspects of the game that influenced us during the design process and that I think had an impact on this particular subject. We've always aimed for the game to be highly replayable, as it is a characteristic of rogue games. Unique combinations of items in every Run: When crafting the game's items, our primary focus was ensuring that each playthrough offered a unique experience for the player. This involved creating items capable of altering gameplay dynamics and fostering synergies between seemingly basic components. While not every item is intended to…

- The Art of Cryptical Path - 25 January 2024
The work on the art of Cryptical Path has been a hell of a roller coaster, and we sat down with Laura Maetz, Rudy Wilde and Cédric Cadiergues to learn about this art journey and their inspirations for the game. Inspirations Cryptical path is the culmination of extensive work and multiple attempts to discover the ideal setting for this innovative roguelite. Early on, the team decided on things they didn’t want for the game: everything too scary was pushed aside, inspirations like Little Nightmares or Coraline who would be too on the scary side for example. The team wanted to find a sweet spot between spooky and gloomy, without a cartoonish aspect, and draw inspiration from games like Lost in Random™ but also from dark fantasy and RP games to incorporate elements that would add to the mystery and dark ambiance. When working on inspirations, Cédric Cadiergues explains that the appropriate…

- Cryptical Path is a roguelite where you're both dungeon crawler and dungeon master - 30 November 2023
It doesn’t take long to recognise the title of this roguelite platformer is something of a misnomer. Yes, Cryptical Path sends you wandering through a roundabout loop of 2D dungeon corridors that split off in all directions. But the path you'll take through them is anything but cryptic. It’s clear-cut, known, and often economical—because you’re the one building it... Read more.
