- Introducing the item “War Maiden’s Axe” - 10 July 2026
Today, I’d like to talk about an item that has become a staple of the Fairune series: the Axe. This time you won’t find it lying on the ground like in previous games. Instead, you’ll discover it enshrined within an ancient ruin. And it’s not just an axe - it’s a War Maiden’s Axe!※”War Maiden’s Axe” A legendary Axe that carves new paths! When you find suspicious looking trees… ※”These 3 trees here… Look different from the rest.” Try chopping them down. You’ll get a “Log” which is also another staple in the series! ※ ”Log” A nice, solid log that looks useful. Might burn if brought close to fire. - Elevation - 8 March 2024
The map we’re using is an evolved version of what we used in “Kamiko”. Some assets are created by directly improving on what was used in “Kamiko” so some of you may recognize them, or find some areas familiar. The time we had to develop “Kamiko” was relatively short, so there was a lot we couldn’t do. Elevation was one aspect we couldn’t implement. In “Kamiko” you could attack enemies on top of buildings from the ground, but this time, “height” is a factor so you cannot interfere with objects that are not on the same level. Here is a picture using “Kamiko” graphics showing how the map physics have changed. ▲The arrow released by the player will hit the side of the building instead of the enemy on the roof. The elevation physics were implemented not just to create an accurate hitbox, but also to prevent puzzles and gimmicks from being accessed from different levels. In other words, it mi…
- Expressions - 16 February 2024
The expressiveness of the characters in “Transiruby” during conversations had great reviews, so naturally we’ve done the same for Fairune 3. The drawings are a little smaller compared to Transiruby, but I think we’ve still managed to keep the characters looking vibrant. The character expressions are inspired by overseas CG cartoons for both titles. Japanese animations, for better or worse, tend to like using subtle expressions that are natural looking. Overseas cartoons however use exaggerated expressions often, and I find that refreshing; there is a lot to learn from them. The expressions also serve to enhance nuances to dialog that otherwise could be missed, making it easier to know the characters' personalities better. Just to let you know, Motchmo and Chromos have expressions like this. I’ll be adding lots of events where you get to see these in use, so I hope you look forward to it…
- Creating companionship - 5 February 2024
The previous Fairunes only had monsters on the field, but this time we have two NPC’s, Motchmo and Chromos. They aren’t just there to drop hints and give guidance like a sign board, but they’ve been written to give a sense of companionship during the adventure even if they don’t join the party. For example, after meeting Motchmo at the entrance of a dungeon you might find her in the depths of it later. Then after leaving the dungeon, she might be outside waiting for you with an item she claims she “Found while exploring the back.” When she makes an appearance, her purpose could be as simple as yelling out “Hey!” to greet you from the top of a cliff. In many games, it’s common to find NPCs that appear in front of the protagonist from time to time, claiming to be their enemy, or maybe having the purpose to give some comic relief, but this time we’re hoping we can develop NPCs that can for…
- Explaining the screenshot - 19 January 2024
Today I’d like to tell you a bit more about the game using the screenshot on the storepage. (1)Life For Fragment Isles, the life gauge is shown using pink diamonds on the top left of the screen. No leveling is required in the game, so it’s possible to make progress while avoiding unnecessary battle, but to keep things exciting the gauge is set on the shorter side. It doesn’t mean the game is super difficult though, we’re trying to adjust things so adventuring is fun, not tedious. (2)Icons The icons on the top right show what is assigned to your controller buttons. The magnifying glass is the “Look” command, the bag shows your “Inventory” and the shoes mean “Dash”. The large sword icon shows what you’ve got equipped, and like previous Fairune games you’ll see your ax and pickaxe equipped here too. As for the camera icon next to it… that’s still a secret. (3)Elevation The level design in…
- Over 30 islands to explore! - 1 December 2023
As we’ve stated on our store page, there are over 30 islands to explore filled with puzzles to solve in Fairune: Fragment Isles. That’s a lot of islands! One reason why we built the world so it’s made of little islands is so that we could restrict explorable areas for each stage, making it easier to navigate. The other reason is so it would be easier to rearrange, add or delete stages during our level designing process. (This proved to be right; we did add and swap around things later.) On a side note, the picture above is a map of the first area of the game. The world (sea) will expand as you play through the game and you’ll get to visit other islands. Also, there are lots of puzzles scattered around which have nothing to do with the main storyline, so once you finish the main quests, it could be fun to revisit the islands again to aim for 100% completion!
- The concept is ”Leaving old habits behind” - 24 November 2023
In Fairune: Fragment Isles, we worked with the concept of “leaving old habits behind”. What do we mean by that? Here are some examples of the changes we worked on… ・Removing the outlines on graphics ・Departing from grid-based movements ・Letting go of the “bump battle” system ・Quitting the idea of leveling altogether ・Getting rid of looping field maps There are other changes we made, but we feel these five factors contributed to making the game more up-to-date. Also, the prequels were intentionally made to be a nod to 80’s retro PC games, so apart from having an old interface, gameplay tended to be a little more tedious. (They were, after all, inspired by games made over 40 years ago.) “Origin” was a Flash game made for old flip phones, “1” was a smartphone app, and “2” was made for the 3DS. All platforms had their own characteristics that added bits and pieces to the series that could g…
- The store page for “Fairune: Fragment Isles” is open now! - 17 November 2023
Hi! It’s Y. KIMURA from Skipmore. The store page for our latest game in our Fairune series, “Fairune: Fragment Isles” is open now! It’s not a remake, it’s not a reboot, it’s not a spinoff, but a completely new game. We could have named it “Fairune 3”, but we decided not to number it so everyone can pick it up without any worry they need to play the others. We’ve made several changes in this one. Firstly, the protagonist has a name. She’s called Liana. She can wield a sword and she can even dash about. Outlines in the pixel art have been removed, so aesthetically, it looks different from other Fairunes too. But the game is made by the same people, so you can be sure it's unmistakably going to be a Fairune game in its essence. We hope you look forward to it!
