  • Bloody co-op romp Killing Floor 2 is free on Epic this week - 9 July 2020

Crikey, it’s all gotten rather gruesome on the Epic Games store this week. Co-op slaughter-fest Killing Floor 2 makes its debut on the storefront today, heading up this week’s free lineup alongside carceral break-out The Escapists 2 and lonely spacefarer Lifeless Planet . You know the drill – these three are free to grab ’til next Thursday, at which point they’ll be replaced by fantasy dungeon-crawler Torchlight 2 . (more…)

  • That s no planet: Lifeless Moon lands on Kickstarter - 10 September 2017

Lifeless Moon , the follow-up to exploration game Lifeless Planet , has launched a crowdfunding campaign. Where the first game was set in the far future 15 light years from Earth, Lifeless Moon sees two astronauts stomping around our own moon, exploring a town that resembles one back on Earth. The original saw you walk and jetpack around in a space suit in third person, jumping between platforms and progressing the linear story. Lifeless Moon will be similar except there’s a “deeper focus on puzzles”, many of which take place in first person. It’s looking for $17,000 ( 13k) on Kickstarter , the same as developers Stage 2 raised for the first game. (more…)

  • Lifeless Moon, the follow-up to Lifeless Planet, is now live on Kickstarter - 5 September 2017

I wanted to like Lifeless Planet more than I ultimately did: The mystery of an ill-fated journey to an alien world that shows signs of a previous Soviet colonization effort seemed aimed squarely at my love of pulpy sci-fi, but it ultimately didn't pay off as well as I'd hoped. It came close enough, though, that I was excited by the announcement earlier this year of a "spiritual successor" called Lifeless Moon , a tale of Apollo-era astronauts who go to the Moon and find themselves back home. Creator David Board said at the time that the new game would be supported by a Kickstarter campaign, and today he announced that it is live . Board was the sole developer on Lifeless Planet ("albeit with LOTS of help and support") but the core team has grown to three for Lifeless Moon, and has access to "more modern game tools" including Unity and Blender. That will enable more advanced ga…

  • Watch the teaser for Lifeless Moon, the 'spiritual successor' to Lifeless Planet - 22 March 2017

Lifeless Planet , a game about exploring a distant alien world that's dotted with some oddly familiar features, did not thrill me as much as I hoped I would. But I still very much like the idea of Lifeless Planet: A weird, pulpy story styled after the softcover sci-fi classics of the 1950s. And so I was happy to receive today's announcement of a follow-up called Lifeless Moon, which is now in the works at developer Stage 2 Interactive.  The new game will be set in the early 1970s, many years before the events of Lifeless Planet, and the teaser hints at a similar sort of experience: Two astronauts on a mission to the moon discover that things are not what they expected on arrival. But studio founder David Board said that while the two games are "rooted in the same universe," Lifeless Moon is not a direct prequel.    "The Lifeless Moon story is actually based on a…

  • Lifeless Planet creator teams with Fallout: Nuka Break studio for live-action film - 8 October 2014

Lifeless Planet is a game I really wanted to like. It's built around an incredibly intriguing premise about a one-way mission to an alien world, and the discovery that you're not actually the first to visit. It ultimately didn't live up to my expectations , but I've never stopped thinking that it's still a really fantastic idea. Apparently I'm not the only one. Lifeless Planet creator David Board revealed a new Kickstarter today aimed at funding the creation of Lifeless Planet: Arrival, a live-action film focusing on the two members of the crew who leave the doomed spaceship to explore ahead of the game's protagonist. The game never delves into what drove them to leave their fellow astronaut behind, what they experienced during their time on the alien world, or how they came to grief; the film, however, "is their story." Several production companies had expressed interest in making a Li…
