  • Update Incoming for Mac Users - 21 September 2026

Kana Ka-Boom - Mac Update Incoming I have to re-compile and deploy the Mac version of Kana Ka-Boom as a Universal App, which will double its file size. This will happen later this week.So Here's The Deal:In the background, Steam doesn't allow game developers a method to deploy a build for Intel Macs versus a build for Silicon Macs. Current versions of Silicon Macs (M1, M2, etc...) use an emulator called "Rosetta" to run Intel apps on Silicon, so I've been able to get away with compiling the Mac version of Kana Ka-Boom for Intel chipsets and letting your Mac OS handle the rest.Rosetta goes away in the next version of Mac OS (OS 28), so my only way to keep the game available and running for those of you with older Intel Macs and those of you with newer Silicon Macs is to re-compile Kana Ka-Boom as a "Universal App". This is generically an App package that contains 2 entire versions of the…

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.5 - 27 November 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.5 Bug Fix:Certain characters were failing to switch from Hiragana to Katakana in Hiragana mode when the SHIFT key was pressed (Good catch, Not275!).Retooled the kana buffer for Hiragana mode and Katakana mode to favor typing speed over buffering to prevent double misses.Retooled fireworks randomizer to keep dakuten and handakuten away from their seion siblings to prevent sibling fireworks from stealing the input.- David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.4 - 10 November 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.4 Additions:For those of you using a Japanese keyboard and Japanese IME, you can now hold down the SHIFT key to toggle from Hiragana mode to Katakana mode (for when things are getting intense on a "Both" lesson or during Freeplay). For example; SHIFT + か will convert to カ. For keys that have a Hiragana character already assigned to SHIFT + such as small や, ゆ, or よ, as well as を and ろ, the system will look at what's been previously typed and what fireworks are actively on the screen to decide if you wanted to type a Hiragana or Katakana character. Bug Fix:Fixed a bug that was causing a delay on certain key inputs when a Japanese IME was in use and the keyboard was set to Hiragana mode.- David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.3 - 20 October 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.3 Shout out to Not275 for taking the time to provide feedback and a feature request! Additions:Input Timeout has been added to the Settings page for those of you that are slower typists. This is the timer that remembers what characters have already been typed before the key buffer is flushed. The new settings are: Fast - 1 second timeout (default) Medium - 2 second timeout Slow - 3 second timeoutThe Backspace Key now removes typed characters (and doesn't penalize you for it). For those of you that have selected a slower input buffer, you won't have to wait for the key buffer to flush if you pressed the wrong key on your keyboard, you can simply backspace out now and start over.- David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch v1.1.2 - 25 August 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.2 Bug Fixes: Looks like I broke two of the Hiragana lessons during one of my previous code updates. Those have been fixed and are working again. - David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch v1.1.1 - 10 April 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.1.1 Bug Fixes: Dakuten and Han-Dakuten weren't working in Japanese Input mode Freeplay mode wasn't selecting certain combo-kana and adding them to the array of fireworks - David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom v1.1.0 - 10 April 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - v1.1.0 Japanese Input Now Supported For those of you with Japanese keyboards (or keyboard covers) that are working on memorizing those keyboard layouts for typing. I will add some detailed documentation on Steam for setting up Japanese IME on both Windows and OSX, but here are the basics for those of you that are already setup: For OSX Everything just works Switch your input to Hiragana or Katakana and type away Control-J or F6 to switch to Hiragana Control-K or F7 to switch to Katakana For those of you with Mac laptops, I recommend this site for Japanese keyboard covers: https://kbcovers.com/product/japanese-keyboard-cover/ For Windows There are a few settings you'll need to tweak Make sure "Predictive Input" is off Make sure "Use Kana input for hardware keyboard" is on If you don't have a 109 key keyboard (with the Hankaku/Zenkaku key) then you'll want to set the "Ctrl…

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.0.5 - 13 March 2025

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.0.5 Shout out to RTS for taking the time to contact me with info on the bug below! Bug Fixes: Fixed a bug where fireworks became undefined in a timed (or unlimited) freeplay session after you completed the first full set of selected kana. Fixed a bug where fireworks were still being launched when a timed session ended (new fireworks should stop being generated when 3 seconds are left on the clock) - David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.0.4 - 15 January 2024

Additions: Stroke order has been added to the drawing board. Whenever you go to either the Hiragana or Katakana charts and select a kana character (and also displayed during lesson intros) you will see the stroke order drawn over the kana character. Moving your mouse over the drawing board will stop the strokes from being drawn while you practice your own drawing skills... Simply move the mouse away and the strokes will begin drawing themselves again. - David @ BinaryCats

  • Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.0.3 - 4 November 2023

Kana Ka-Boom - Patch 1.0.3 Bug Fixes: The Windows version of Kana Ka-Boom wasn't properly updating the database when switching between Windowed and Fullscreen modes. We had to remove the Steam Overlay from the Windows version of Kana Ka-Boom because it was failing to load properly in Windowed Mode and it was also causing an issue with closing the app during some play sessions. Additions: Steam Achievements are now reset when you choose Reset Database from Settings More Info on Steam Integration: We are using steamworks.js for our Steam integration (Steam Overlay & Achievements)... We discovered right away during final beta testing that steamworks.js isn't working at all on Mac builds, and thus we disabled those features for Mac. After going live, we additionally discovered that the Steam Overlay when called by steamworks.js is sometimes causing an issue with the app attempting to close…

  • Kana Ka-Boom has launched! - 1 November 2023

We've launched! I'm incredibly excited to have Kana Ka-Boom up and available on Steam! I'm still learning the in's and out's of Steam, but wanted to get an announcement up on our community page. This game was designed for those of you that are just starting to learn the Japanese language and for those that want an entertaining way to practice your Katakana and Hiragana. So far, I've only been able to find drag n' drop kana games and flash card games for entry level learning of kana characters which prompted the creation of Kana Ka-Boom. For those of you on the fence about purchasing the game, you can play the online demo at https://kanakaboom.binarycats.com/demo to try out all of the Katakana section and get a feel for how the game works. If you do purchase, I'd like you to know that your money will be going right back into making Kana Ka-Boom a better product. In the immediate, I have…
