- Now in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean - 20 August 2025
A few months ago, I ported Cogs from a custom C++ engine I wrote in 2008 to Unity. That's made the game easier to maintain and also opened the doors to make it easier to localize to East-Asian languages. I'm happy to announce that today's build makes Cogs available in Chinese, Japanese and Korean and also fixes some of the text rendering bugs in Russian. As always, feedback is appreciated! If you see bugs or bad translations, let me know by sending feedback to [email protected]. If you want to try a translation without changing the language at the operating system level, just type one of these cheat codes from the main menu: English = "langen" Chinese = "langzh" Japanese = "langja" Korean = "langko" German = "langde" Spanish = "langes" French = "langfr" Italian = "langit" Dutch = "langnl" Polish = "langpl" Portuguese = "langpt" Russian = "langru" As part of this patch, I also mad…
- Language support is back! - 18 July 2025
As I ported Cogs from the old 2009 engine to Unity, it was too much to get all to old localization files working at the same time. I took some time over the last few weeks to completely overhaul the font rendering system, allowing me to offer Cogs in all these languages! English German Spanish French Italian Dutch Polish Portuguese Russian As part of this change, I've moved all font rendering to use signed distance fields (SDF), which should mean crisper, more legible fonts everywhere. If your system doesn't automatically detect the language you prefer to use, I built in some "cheat codes" that you can type from any screen to use your language of choice. English = "langen" German = "langde" Spanish = "langes" French = "langfr" Italian = "langit" Dutch = "langnl" Polish = "langpl" Portuguese = "langpt" Russian = "langru" See a bad translation? Bad font rendering? Don't hesitate to send b…

- Cogs Remastered! - 19 May 2025
I recently took some time to port Cogs over to an entirely different code base -- from a custom C++ engine I wrote 16 years ago to C# on Unity. Thanks to a few folks on the forums who have helped me hunt down some launch-day bugs and encouraged me to support the legacy Cloud Save data. This version should be better in just about every way -- snappier, higher-resolution, and more aligned with modern APIs. For now, it's available in English only. Don't hesitate to send bugs and feature requests to [email protected]
- Cogs Update Released - 8 November 2012
Hey, Mountain Lion users -- thanks for your patience while we worked around some bugs in the OSX 10.8 graphics drivers. With the newest changes, I've fixed the flickering borders that could sometimes show up in fullscreen mode. I also modified shadow rendering to bypass a graphics driver bug that was causing a really tragic crash.

- Sony: PlayStation Home is the 'easiest point of entry' for indie console development - 10 October 2011
PlayStation Network has a lot more indie games than you might expect. For example, Steam/iOS darling Cogs is available as a completely free-to-play multiplayer game on your PS3. The only thing is, it's hidden within the confines of PlayStation Home. Gaming is a big push for Home, especially with its upcoming redesign . However, I had to ask Jack Buser, director of Sony's PS3 social network, why developers would even want to make content for Home in the first place. Wouldn't chasing PSN and the Pub Fund be the wiser choice? Buser told me that "A lot of developers start at Home" because "Home tends to be one of the easiest points of entry for content creation on PlayStation." "Home is all scripting (LUA), and all the 3D stuff is being done in Maya. So it's super-easy," Buser explained. "You can have teams of literally one person. Usually team sizes vary between 5-10 people. You can create…
