New gaming IPs are few and far between, but Bordeaux-based Asobo Studio struck gold in 2019 with the release of action-adventure stealth game A Plague Tale: Innocence . The game, which follows the story of siblings Amicia and Hugo as they flee the Black Plague as it spreads across mid-14th-century France, was a critical and commercial success. Moreover, in 2022, Asobo followed Innocence with a sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, which continues the story of Amicia and Hugo. Like its predecessor, Requiem proved to also be a success, receiving five nominations at The Game Awards 2022, including Game of the Year, and surpassing 3 million players by October 2023. For the third title in what has now become the Plague Tale franchise, however, Asobo Studio wanted to do something different. As much as Resonance is part of A Plague Tale universe, it stands out for its unique take on mythology, storytelling and gameplay from the previous games. So, yes, while I was sad to see no swarms of rats in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy , I was very happy with the switch from stealth gameplay to scrappy melee. I might have been more worried going in if I knew just how little experience developer Asobo Studio have making combat games.
