Freespace 2 turns 20 next week. Instead of lamenting the passage of time and our fleeting mortality, I'm choosing to mark the occasion by directing you to GOG , where the classic space dogfighter is currently free.  It's lost some of its sheen—though it still looks better than GOG's unflattering screenshots—but ageing graphics can't hide what a superb cosmic combat game it was and still is, combining some of the best bits of space sims and arcade shooters with battles of dizzying scale.  I remember it being one of the first games where the space battles felt like they were properly, intimidatingly massive. Nothing looked as good as capital ships clashing, unleashing devastating broadside attacks that lit up the void. - Freespace tabletop game will "gauge interest" in a new PC release - 12 December 2014
The Freespace games, particularly Freespace 2, were tremendously good space combat simulators. We scored it 93/100 in our January 2000 review , and developer Volition, now known for the Saints Row series, admitted a few years ago that it would kill people for the chance to make Freespace 3. In an odd twist, the Freespace IP actually went back to Interplay last year for just $7500 , but it's not the company it used to be, and so excitement over that development was somewhat muted. A new, official Freespace project entitled Freespace Tactics actually hit Kickstarter a few days ago, which very briefly raised my eyebrows until I realized it's not for a videogame, but for a tabletop miniatures game "inspired by" the series. Interplay’s latest attempt to re-enter our affections isn’t quite as suspicion-clouded as West Games’ second dodgy-lookin’ gesture towards a spiritual STALKER sequel, but it’s fair to say that whoever wears the Interplay skinsuit are not Interplay’s original founders.
