Hotline Miami 2 should always be on the list when we talk about iconic indie games. The fast-paced and punishing top-down combat might be a touch tighter overall in the 2012 original, but the sequel still channels that breakneck pace and rip-roaring synthwave soundtrack in a way that makes it a total joy to play. Indie publisher Devolver Digital will host an E3 livestream at 9.30pm UK time on Saturday, 12th June. It's part of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. A new month means a fresh roster of additions to PlayStation Now, and February's a busy one for Sony's subscription service, ushering in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Detroit: Become Human, Darksiders Genesis, Little Nightmares, and more. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 joined Activision's ceaseless procession of franchise instalments in 2015, sending the series' reliably solid FPS action to the far-flung future of 2065. The high-tech-tinged end result earned itself a Eurogamer Recommended award back in the day, with contributor Edwin Evans-Thirlwell writing, "Where Treyarch's single-player struggles, the deftly tuned multiplayer soars, delivering a Call of Duty that's rich with options." - The messy story behind the Hotline Miami mod that never was - 13 August 2019
It's four in the morning on 18th February 2017, and a 19-year-old modder and writer named Spencer Yan is sitting in his college dorm at his computer, with a server full of Discord users eager for him to drop the latest update for Midnight Animal, a total conversion mod and original story built upon the bloodstained, bullet-riddled blueprints of Hotline Miami. At this point, Yan has worked on Midnight Animal for over a year. The project has grown from a Mod DB page and some well received YouTube trailers to being greenlit on Steam. He has permission from developers Dennaton Games to use the source code, and an entire community of engaged and supportive Hotline Miami fans behind him. - Here's what Hotline Miami would look like as a PSone game - 14 January 2019
Above is a really neat interpretation of what Hotline Miami would look like as a 3D PSone game. It's a fan project by developer Puppet Combo, creator of indie horror games like Babysitter Bloodbath and Power Drill Massacre . The video lasts for just over a minute, but offers a good look at what the game might've looked like if it was released in, say, 1999, and you had to play it with a DualShock controller. It really captures the shaky 3D effect that strangely ended up defining the look of PSone games, and it has nice touches like the static TV screen and VHS kill counter. We’ve already seen which games sold best on Steam last year, but a perhaps more meaningful insight into movin’ and a-shakin’ in PC-land is the games that people feel warmest and snuggliest about. To that end, Valve have announced the winners of the 2017 Steam Awards, a fully community-voted affair which names the most-loved games across categories including best post-launch support, most player agency, exceeding pre-release expectations and most head-messing-with. Vintage cartoon-themed reflex-tester Cuphead leads the charge with two gongs, but ol’ Plunkbat and The Witcher series also do rather well – as do a host of other games from 2017’s great and good. - Hotline Miami 2's level editor leaves beta - 22 June 2016
This feels like it should be a headline from last year worrier that I am, I've just checked the dates again but Hotline Miami 2's level editor has just left beta. Which is to say, it's now live , so you can make your own Hotline levels, then whack them onto the Steam Workshop for others to enjoy. Sure, you've been able to do that for quite a while now, but the developers have fixed a fair few bugs for this proper release. You'll find the patch notes for the editor here. Developer Dennaton has "attempted to make sure your old levels still work as they did before," but notes that there "may be some issues importing your levels created with versions prior to today's update".
