- Frictional Mod Jam 2026 - WHAT IS REALITY? - 27 May 2026
Things stop lining up. Systems behave, but not quite the way you expect. You start to question whether what you’re looking at is actually there, or just convincing enough. We’re announcing the Frictional Mod Jam 2026: WHAT IS REALITY?This year’s theme is about digging into perception and uncertainty. Inspired by SOMA and the Dark World from Amnesia. We’re craving experiences that play with what’s real, what isn’t, and how sometimes you can’t tell the difference. This can mean a lot of things - subtle inconsistencies, shifting rules, unreliable worlds, or something more psychedelic and abstract. There’s no strict interpretation. The idea is to explore worlds and storytelling that make the player pause and reconsider WTF is going on. Can be gritty sci-fi, bunkers, or fantasy. Get weird with it.The jam will run over the summer and is focused on HPL modding. You can join in solo or in a small…

- Amnesia creators Frictional are teasing what could be Soma 2 through a sinister luxury hotel website - 24 September 2025
Amnesia: Rebirth developers Frictional are teasing what appears to be a new sci-fi game by way of a sneaky update to their deep sea horror venture Soma . Whatever it is, it involves some godforsaken luxury hotel steeped in a sheeny corporate appropriation of sacred ideas about cyclical change - a hotel that promises "an out of this world experience". Sounds like the Dark Descenders are getting into the Dead Space business. Read more

- The existential dread of horror game Soma has been manifested in a plushie - 20 June 2024
The sinking terror that comes of having no fixed identity and being trapped alone thousands of metres beneath the ocean has been compacted into the soft, comforting (?) form of a plushie. Frictional Games, the creators of first-person horror game Soma , launched the soft toy depiction of the game's protagonist Simon on Makeship , aka Kickstarter for plushies. Normally, we don't report on merch - why would we? - but there is something deeply and darkly funny about making a fleece-coated fuzzy huggy wuggy about the psychologically harrowing experience of being forgotten under the sea. Then again, Frictional Games are not the first to do this sort of thing. Read more

- The best game of the past ten years is now less than $5 - 15 November 2023
What do you want from a videogame? As I look back across 2023, and all the big releases like Starfield , Diablo 4, and Baldur's Gate 3, it seems like exploration, freedom, and choice are the defining characteristics of today's popular PC hits. But there is another type of game - or rather, another approach to game-making - whereby your freedom might be limited in the literal sense, but the richness and depth of what you experience is just as great, or perhaps greater, than the most expansive RPG. Personally, I like shorter games where every single moment feels written, pored over, and choreographed. You might have played Amnesia The Bunker, or other entries in the superlative horror game series. Frictional's best work, however - and the best game of the last decade - is something different, and you can get it now for less than $5. Read the rest of the story... RELATED LINKS: SOMA devs r…
