- Turn Based Thursday Fest and New Demo! - 3 June 2025
Hey ya'll! It's been awhile. Sorry for the lack of updates and devlogs. I took some time off to refresh my batteries so I could come back to Gum Flesh with a fresh outlook. I'm still pluggin away at this monster. But today is not a devlog. On this Monday, #TurnBasedThursdayFest begins! Definitely will run until at least Thursday. Unless the organizers goal is chaos. But anyways, you should really go check some of the demos on display! Really good stuff. I recommend Weapons Arena . Good fun there. But you should also play Gum Flesh. With the start of this fest is new demo! There's two new bosses to fight and lots of quality of life changes and balance. I'd love to know what you think. Leaving feedback is wonderfully helpful. At the same time, please feel no obligation to. You can't throw a rock without hitting a gamedev begging for feedback. So if you're feeling worn down, please just pl…
- Devlog #3: Fun Movement - 25 January 2025
Hey. It has been awhile! I got busy doing maintenance on some of my previous games so Gum Flesh had to take a backseat for a bit. Plus it's been like -30 degrees here and all I've felt like doing is playing Balatro. Ok first off, you might've notice some sweet new cover art. It blows my mind how good it is. It's all thanks to Gloomy Bro. Makes me want to up my game. Alrighty now on to the main course: MOVEMENT I love movement tech. Traversing a world in style feels so good. If you played my previous game Cavity Busters, you'll recall the 900 different ways you can move around the world. I wondered how I could boil fun movement down into a turn-based rougelike. It's not complicated or profound. But it's extra work. ANIMATION AND FEEDBACK One big thing is animations! If you jump, it's animated. If you dash, dust and rocks will be kicked up. This is something that is applied to almost ever…
- Gum Flesh Demo Available Now! - 9 November 2024
It's time. I've been threatening myself for awhile that I neeeeed to release a demo. I finally buckled down and put together a demo. This demo is very very early. It's missing tons of systems, art, and sound and music. You've been warned. People see a demo and think, "oh the game must be close to release". Well lets pop that bubble right now. Release is still a ways off. But I want to get the community involved as early as possible. I've been running very small play sessions with friends and family with promising results. So this demo is really about getting a lot of feedback. The demo will provide you with a form to leave some feedback. (it's just a google form) It would be awesome if you took the time to fill that out. Or you can leave feedback here, or any other way you find. But if you just want to check out the game, that's is totally awesome as well. I would highly suggest going t…
- Devlog #2: Brainers - 1 September 2024
Yo. Lets talk about one unique enemy: The Brainer. The Brainer isn't one specific enemy, but a class of enemies. Brainers have, as you might have guessed, a large protruding brain. They're between a common and uncommon occurrence. But what makes them special? I'll show you. You can jump into their brain Psychonauts style. But this is more physical then mental. You enter their brain and fight brain cells. Now you can kill Brainers by normal means. And they are pretty fragile and slow. But if you defeat them via brain, you get another special interaction. Braining Brainers causes a large AOE attack! This one causes the ground underneath to fall out. Another create a giant explosion. Another fires off a long range laser beam. There's more in the works but you get the point. JUICY. EXPLOSIONS. FUN. Or JEF. Idk. Maybe not JEF. JEF is cool though. I have more plans for these guys but I'm stil…
- From the surface of Gum Flesh: "Hey" - 12 August 2024
Hey! Welcome to the first of at least a few development updates for Gum Flesh! I'll try to give you an idea of how development is going and share any fun stuff that's happening. For this first one, I want to talk about what Gum Flesh is and isn't. -first draft of gum flesh steam capsule Gum Flesh is tagged as a traditional roguelike. I think that comes with a pretty set in stone framework. Turn-based. Grid-based. Permadeath. Deep systems. A steep learning cur...... NO. Gum Flesh aims to be suuuuper easy to pick up and play. I hope that you'll be able to know if the game is right for you within the first couple minutes rather than the first couple hours. On top of that, there is visual and audio feedback for everything. This sort of thing is becoming less rare for modern traditional roguelikes which rules. I love old school roguelikes. But I just don't have time to learn them. I want Gum…
