- GENERATION EXILE 1.0 IS LIVE! - 17 April 2026
Generation Exile's pre-1.0 journey reaches its destinationIt's almost difficult to believe but Generation Exile has reached the end of this phase of its journey. After a focused Early Access period and a much, much longer period of development, we are proud to bring to you all the version of the game that completes our vision of it.The game has advanced a lot in the last stretch with changes too numerous to list, but among the biggest are:Final "Planetfall" chapter of the game that puts all the player's skills to the test with dynamic objects that change every playthrough. This chapter follows the previous ones organically but can also be launched into directly as something of a "sandbox" challenge mode.Streamlining and refinement of systems players engage with the most, and addessing valuable feedback to improve these systems (goodbye Rubble, you will not be missed!).Many, many new str…
- Generation Exile 1.0 Release Date - April 17 - 31 March 2026
When we learned that the Earth Appreciation Fest Steam Event would be back starting April 17th, 2026, we knew this would be the ideal opportunity to bring Generation Exile into orbit for its 1.0 launch while also helping raise money for some incredibly important conservation work.If you aren't familiar with the event, it's a showcase of games that primarily feature on ecological themes, in forms both aspirational and cautionary (here's the 2025 edition). It's an excellent event and we're very excited to have GenExile's 1.0 launch be a part of it!Now to be sure, with the state of the industry being what it is and also... gestures broadly, it would be pretty disingenuous to claim that it's been easy for a small organisation like ours to swim against some pretty ferocious tides. But we'll talk about that more in the lead up to launch.Today is about celebration and sharing on tremendous gra…

- Rainforests & Radiation Update is live! - 13 March 2026
Rainforests & Radiation Update is live! This content update features the next major chunk of the game- a third biome is now available aboard the ship, joining the Grasslands and Taiga biomes already available. While this was the major focus of this update, there are a handful of other additions as well, bringing GenExile one step closer to our complete vision for the game. To do something a little different this time, we have put together a developer-narrated trailer highlighting the biggest parts of the update:Rainforest BiomeThe biggest addition in this update is an entire new biome- the Rainforest! This lush tropical rainforest biome is the most dangerous aboard the ship.Because the thing is- space is full of basically nothing, except for radiation. It's super, duper full of radiation. How to manage long-term exposure to cosmic radiation without the protective bulwark of a planet and…
- Weekly Update - March 6th, 2026 - 6 March 2026
Content Update 2: Rainforests & Radiation in betaWe are preparing for our next major content update, the Rainforests & Radiation Update! As we’re fully heads down finishing up everything for this update, we’ll keep the post quite brief.A preview of the update is now live in opt-in preview beta branch. It’s a snapshot of a build in progress, so be forewarned that there will almost certainly be a few rough edges, but we wanted to give any folks who might be curious a chance to take a early look.As a small tantalising tidbit, here's a cropped screenshot of what's in store for this update:Details about how to switch to the beta preview branch and how to provide feedback on the update are all available in our Discord, so please come visit us there if you’re curious!https://discord.gg/dKaCuJm3M6For everyone else, the next Content Update should be live in about a week and we’re excited to get…
- Weekly Update - February 13th, 2026 - 14 February 2026
We'll keep this update short and sweet, so cutting right to it... Preview of our next Content Update is coming soon!Next week we'll make a preview of the next Content Update live in our beta branch. We'll re-post details about how to opt into that branch once it's live, but it's an extremely simple process here on Steam. There will likely still be a few rough edges in the preview, but we want to get some hands-on feedback early so we can refine the Content Update even further before it goes live to everyone. And what will be contained in said content update preview? We'll keep details on that just in our Discord until the Content Update is live in the main branch, in deference to those folks on Steam who don't know anything until the Content Update out in full, but as a small visual amuse-bouche:Anyone wanted to jump in on this and share your feedback on the Content Update preview once it…
- Weekly Update - January 23rd, 2026 - 23 January 2026
One of the... exciting* things about returning to features that were technically present in the game and giving them a presentation polish pass is you get to discover all kinds of... exciting* that had been right under your nose the whole time.Navigable Family TreesEach of the procedurally generated characters in GenExile has a multi-generational lineage preceding them (back several generations to before the ship left Earth) and this continues to simulate as time within the ship moves forward. All this data has been in the game for quite a while, but surfacing it hadn't gotten to the front of the priority queue until now. Here's the family tree of good ol' Harvey Holub and his kin. The visuals here are first-pass placeholders that are now having proper UI styling applied to them, but the functionality is more or less complete. It's possible to browse up and down the family tree, seeing w…
- Weekly Update - January 9th, 2026 - 10 January 2026
We’ve returned from a much-needed end of year respite, and we’re very much excited to be back at the wheel (keyboard?) to keep progressing on Generation Exile! The Path Ahead We’re now full steam ahead on Content Update 2, which will focus on the new biome teased at the end of the Resources & Reclamation Update that went live in December. In general, it seems the most effective way to get Generation Exile to the state players desire is to be delivering more substantive updates all at once, vs. putting out more piecemeal features components. This will let us concentrate on just making the next chunk of game exist without needing to fork our attention between that and ensuring the current “live” build is getting smaller updates that might not play nicely alongside otherwise work-in-progress features/content that isn’t complete and fully playable yet. This means we should also be able to ge…

- Resources & Reclamation Update is Live! (and 35% off for the Steam Winter Sale) - 18 December 2025
Resources & Reclamation Update is live!Generation Exile's first major content update is live, and our focus for this update was incorporating tons of great feedback from the community about the core city-building resources / need satisfaction visualisations as well as building out the next major chunk of the game. So without further preamble…Structure ManagerOne of the biggest things we wanted to prioritise for this content update is making the core resources/needs visualisation much clearer. Essentially, making it far easier for someone play the game to answer the question, "Wait, why isn't that structure working?" So we have built a robust Structure Manager to provide full input and output visualisation for every structure. And if some structure isn’t getting what it needs, it’s easy to follow the links in the chain back to what isn’t delivering.Grasslands+ Taiga, together at lastThe…
- Weekly Update - December 5th, 2025 - 6 December 2025
Structure Resources UI/UX Revamp PreviewAs previewed a little last week, we're continuing to make a major area of focus for our first content update (coming later this month!) improving the game's core UI/UX and allowing players to clearly and easily understand what any given structure is doing. To that end, we're building stateful and responsive visualisations of any given structure's behaviours. And as a small preview (albeit one where the visuals are still work-in-progress), here's the new resource focus highlighting UI showing precisely where the selected Cricket Farm is receiving its resources from: There will also be a new panel in a selected structure's "info pane" that shows its various inputs and ouputs and if any of them isn't functioning, additional information about why. The goal is to make diagnosing and addressing those structure production chains more straightforward.Anot…
- Weekly Update - November 28th, 2025 - 29 November 2025
Our big December content update is just a few weeks away but in the meantime, here's what we've been focusing on this week!Gameplay Help PagesWe have added a few web pages to help explain some of the core concepts in GenExile:https://sonderluststudios.notion.site/generation-exile-help-pagesIn the long term, we want GenExile to be self-contained as much as possible in terms of explaining all the what/how/why of playing the game within the game itself. However, during Early Access, keeping robust onboarding up to date can be a bit challenging, as we're frequently revising and iterating on systems. And as onboarding is the part of the game that perhaps requires more playtesting than anything else, we don't want to accidentally slow down progress on the current Road Map targets by returning too frequently to those onboarding portions. We'll of course continue to refine and improve some of th…

- Weekly Update for November 21st, 2025 & Games from Vancouver Steam Sale! - 21 November 2025
First Supporter Collaboration - Your Name in the Game!GenExile now has its first Supporter Collaboration! And we're starting with (potentially) the most personal of collaborations. We've selected one registered Supporter to add a name (their own or another) to the GenExile's character name database! This is the collection of names used by the procedural character generation system in GenExile when it populates all the denizens of the ship (and their offspring... and then their offspring...).And how does one become included in future Supporter Collaborations? Easy! If you have the Supporter Sustainability Pack, join us on Discord and send a DM with your receipt to the admin and you'll be included in the pool for future collaborations: https://discord.gg/dKaCuJm3M6Should you not yet have the Supporter Sustainability Pack, that can be solved with but a click:This won't be the only kind of S…
- Weekly Update - November 14th, 2025 - 15 November 2025
Patch v0.5.2aThe next update for Generation Exile is live! It's a somewhat smaller fellah this time, since it was a statutory holiday here in Canada earlier this week, but mainly because we've been pretty heads down laying the groundwork for our first big content update. That will be coming later in December, but of course we'll still be doing updates weekly along the way. That update will be the The First True Big 'Un™ though, with more details on that in the days to come!As a small preview, one (but by no means the only) area of focus right now is improving legibility on production chains and structure needs. This is very much WIP and the visuals at not at all final, but the aim is to have responsive and clear feedback that enables players to clearly understand a) "If I build this structure here, what will it affect?" and b) "This structure has an issue that means it isn't functioning…
- Weekly Update - November 7th, 2025 - 8 November 2025
Whew, what has it only been 3 days? It feels like it’s been 300 years! That… warm sensation… ahem Anyway, we wanted to give folks here on Steam some insight both into what we’re up to and where this grand vessel is headed. So, without further preamble, let’s dive in!Patch v0.5.1cWe’ve been pushing out small hotfixes every day this week (sometimes multiples in a day!) but today we pushed some of the biggest changes yet.One of the best parts of Early Access is getting your game into the hands of actual players before every last decision is locked in and more difficult to change. We’ve been playtesting the game throughout development, of course, and when we put out a demo for Steam Next Fest back in June, there was all kinds of great feedback to act upon. Taking GenExile to a live, in-person event here in Vancouver called Game Garden was also a great source of feedback and seeing the game…
