Well, remind me never to anger a Far Cry fan again. Those playing 2014's Far Cry 4 on Steam have been getting rather irate on social media after Ubisoft seemingly censored some of the game's nudity. With many linking this unannounced change to the company's recently announced partnership with Tencent, things got quite heated. However, Ubisoft has now confirmed that the censorship wasn't intentional and was due to a "technical error," and has now swiftly reverted Far Cry 4 back to its original state. Starting with Assassin's Creed Shadows, the developer has promised that all new releases will come to Valve's platform on day one, instead of being exclusive to its own Ubisoft Connect platform on PC. Many games from older series, like Assassin's Creed and Ghost Recon, have also been enjoying Steam achievements, years after going without them. Dan Hay, the veteran creative behind many Far Cry games, leaves Ubisoft today after a decade of service. Hay served as a producer on Far Cry 3, before moving to an executive producer role for Far Cry 4 and 5, and the series' Blood Dragon, Primal and New Dawn spin-offs. Ranking the games in the Far Cry series isn't an especially easy task given that for the most part it's been a widely varied collection of shooters: Far Cry 1, 2, and 3 were all distinctly different from one another, and while Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, and Blood Dragon were quite similar to Far Cry 3, Primal threw us a curve and plopped us in the Stone Age. Another issue with ranking them: the Far Cry games are all pretty good! There are no stinkers in the series, meaning there's no one to really dump on. This makes things harder. Trailers and screenshots are put out well before the game is complete, which means they re inevitably going to need visual band-aids here and there, and communicating everything the game is trying to achieve systems, story, style in a single frame is difficult. To make their games look as good as can be, some publishers pose characters and snap screenshots with a free camera, sometimes even downsampling from high resolutions to reduce aliasing, or using Photoshop to make them pop just a little more.
